Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Well, this is seriously disappointing. I was really looking forward to watching him play and hoping for a healthy season. I guess some guys are just made of glass, and that never changes.

AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 You would think there would be a way to get Daniel Nava off the Red Sox. With Castillo, Betts, Craig, Victorino, Ramirez, Holt and JBJ, the Sox are gonna be hard-pressed to even give Nava a bench role. A guy with his OBP would be perfect for our homer-happy team.
BTS Community Moderator Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 This is a huge blow. With Dirks dead, we're penciling in Pillar and Pompey every day, with nothing at all backing them up.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Damn! Saunders just can't catch a break.

HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 I think this is the baseball Gods balancing karma after we fleeced the Mariners in the Thames/Delaballs deal.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Reyes Martin Bautista Edwin Donaldson Navarro/Smoak Pillar Izturis/Tolleson Pompey Bench: Navarro/Smoak, Tolleson/Izturis, Valencia, Dickerson/Dirks?
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 So who wants to second guess the trade now?! Not saying that we would have still made the trade if we knew he would be injured before he even plays a game but that doesn't mean the Jays have lost the trade either. IIRC, it's till two years of Saunders for one year of Happ. It will take a string of injuries, not just the one, to torpedo the value the Jays are getting. It's true that Saunders has a track record of injuries and we don't know how well he will recover but on the flip side, Happ isn't exactly an innings eater. Trade still favours the Jays on paper but this definitely raises some doubts. Is this entirely a freak injury or did poor conditionning play a big part in the severity? People who were already skeptical about Saunders will probably assume the later.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Wil Venable or .......................Allen Craig?

With Dirks dead, we're penciling in Pillar and Pompey every day, with nothing at all backing them up. Our system has Dickerson, Carrera, Gindl, Dirks once healthy, and who knows, maybe prospect Mike Crouse will be an option if he does well in Buffalo this year. And I expect AA will be looking for help via the wire. But still, this hurts. And he stepped on an underground sprinkler to tear his meniscus.. curse that grounds crew!

I guess he can still contribute. but I'm a believer in Happ - he was a different pitcher this season than previously and it was all a change in mindset. That being said, I'd hate to have Happ take a spot away from Norris, so I guess I would have traded someone else for him.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Wil Venable or .......................Allen Craig? Craig is the American version of Saunders?
Sorrow Verified Member Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Surprisingly I've seen this once before. The spikes on the cleat catch and you tend to get hurt pretty badly.
flafson Verified Member Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 There isn't a depth problem remember. Should have just kept Gose Would you really feel better if we had Pillar/Gose to replace Saunders? To me, Pillar > Gose, i gave up all hope on Gose being able to hit.

With the Red Sox likely being our major competition for the AL East i doubt their just going to give him away to us to help us out. He would be a good pick up though but i doubt we get him.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Did we really expect zero injuries? At least one of the relievers that we're relying on heavily will start the season on the DL...in the next week or two we're going to hear about one of our starters with forearm stiffness and there will be a panic over whether he is able to start with the big club to start the season. One of our infielders will have some sort of hamstring or groin issue. And almost every other team in major league baseball will have to deal with the same thing. Is the depth where we'd like it to be? No. And no one is accepting injuries as excuses anymore so they're just going to have to suck it up, and Pillar/Pompey/???? will have to get it done or else Gibbons and AA will not be long for this season. I expected injuries but not due to stepping on a sprinkler and tearing a knee up. I'm sure we'll have the normal wear and tear injuries that every team has it's just the freak injury stuff that really blows.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Venable makes the most sense but he makes over 4m. Jays will have to trade Navarro first and then make a trade with SD.
Governator Community Moderator Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 heughm... didn't everyone here reminded us that it's ok if he's injured because he'll still bring us 2WAR as long as he plays the second half healthy. amiright stat geeks? We can just stick a replacement player there for 80 games and we're good to go because Russel Martin makes up for that.
North of 60 Verified Member Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Reyes Martin Bautista Edwin Donaldson Navarro/Smoak Pillar Izturis/Tolleson Pompey Bench: Navarro/Smoak, Tolleson/Izturis, Valencia, Dickerson/Dirks? One ugly lineup. Navarro at DH is a joke. Pillar, Izturis, Pompey are below average at their position on offense. Martin, from an offensive standpoint, could put up a dud line like he has many times in his career.

jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Chances DSJ sees OF time before the break? More likely Mike Crouse.. he's expected to be in AAA. But with Smith Jr. expected to be in AA, you never know.
Steveorama Verified Member Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Whoever the Jays get, they need him to be able to hit right-handers. Jays were already weak from the left side; the Saunders injury only exacerbates this. Ironically, this injury might make it HARDER for AA to trade Navarro, unless a better LH bat is coming back.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 I'm just the messenger. Of what exactly? We all know about the injury. You're the only one who seems to be implying that his invalidates sabermetrics (or something).
