I’ll never forget it: I was out in the stretch circle, I played catch with Chris Hoiles every single day, and I lobbed the ball to him — and he was paying attention, but he pretended like he wasn’t. He head-butted the ball and all of a sudden I had what was called “the posse” all over me. Cal Ripken, Ben McDonald, Brady Anderson, Chris Hoiles, all of the above. They beat me on my ribcage, physically abused me on my way to the training table. They taped me spread-eagle to the training table, they wrote “rookie” on my forehead with pink methylate, and they shoved a bucket of ice down my shorts. I missed the entire batting practice, and you know what? Phil Regan, the manager of the Baltimore Orioles, he did not care, because he knew that what those guys were doing was ‘educating me.’

and people don't think players would make jokes about Izturis falling up the stairs.

Ah, Cal Ripken Jr....the body of Troy Glaus with the stamina of superman and the mind of a lunatic. Yeah, *he* wasn't roiding at all. When he passes on and the medical examiners do an autopsy they'll find all kinds of toxins unknown to the human race in his body. But we gotta make sure Bonds and Clemens stay out of the HOF.

P.S. I hope those O's pricks are still around so they can read my unsubstantiated opinion that their hero Ripken was the biggest juicer out of anybody.

Did you guys actually think Cal Ripken was the man the media made him out to be or are you guys just being obtuse? I don't like or dislike him him anymore then before today. I'm pretty sure Ripken jr had something similar if not worse done to him considering the era he started out in. Its not to justify it but he's still one hell of a player and thats all that matters barring any major criminal case unfolding

Every time I see Hurl IRL he goes on a 5 minute drunken rant about how much he hates Cal Ripken due to some event that occured at the ASG in Toronto in the early 90s.

Based on this recurring conversation from respected forum member TheHurl I can conclude that Cal Ripken has zero integrity.

And it took Zaun to confirm that Ripken is a prick. Even without witnessing it at the ASG (nice memory by the way), I've heard it for years though from Autograph hounds and a few stories along the way from media types.

Why does he have to have a criminal case for it to be not all that matters (being one hell of a player)? So he can go around murdering innocent people but if he doesn't have a criminal case it's okay?

How would I know if he did it unless he was successfully tried, how would I know if he committed a crime unless it was brought up? I don't know Cal like he's my next door neighbor, so why would you ask such a confusing question unless you're trolling?

Zaun responded to Stoeten lol. It was surprisingly reasoned, not confrontational.

http://andrewstoeten.com/2015/02/21/zaun-responds/

Yes it was a measured response and I think part of it is that Zaun may realize that he pulled a Hayhurst. Even though his intent was to praise, he still spilled the beans on the kind of clubhouse stuff that doesn't get talked about and in addition to that, he named names . I can see why Zaun is more concerned with doing right by his former Orioles teammates at this point than he would be with keeping up the shtick. Gotta give him credit for having some self awareness and decency. He could have easily reacted with Charles Barkley style, "you never had a date to the prom, you nerd", type nonsense.

I'm pretty sure Stoeten jerked off all night having Zaun respond. As an old guy that hangs out with a lot of younger people, I'd like to ask who says the old guys can't adjust. Picking the music in the clubhouse sounds like it would be an annoying process, no matter who is picking it.

I'd like to let GD know that if he ever meets anyone from the board we'll be forced to punch him in the ribs until he's old enough to buy us beers.

Don't worry, Dogg will get me long before that.

This story is getting picked up on US networks

Was being discussed on Sirius XM this morning

Will be interesting if Ripken Jr becomes obliged to comment

Ripken Jr.

"I talked to him because he's a friend of mine. I consider him a good friend," Ripken told MASN's Roch Kubatko. "I don't know how it got all out of whack. He apologized and said he used the wrong words. There was no abuse, there was no hazing. It doesn't do anything for team unity. He knows that and everybody who knows me knows that."

Brady

"I never did that to anyone," Anderson said. "I don't believe in rookie hazing or status based on tenure and that nonsense. Hated it then and wouldn't put up with it as a rookie, and certainly didn't carry on a tradition I thought was absurd.

"I didn't do it and wouldn't allow it done to me. I've always felt that it's hard enough to feel comfortable as a rookie and a veteran's job was to include them and make them feel a part of the team. We want them to perform and help us win games and I never understood how being dismissive of them or dressing them up in silly costumes was a logical path to that desired outcome."

And Zaun

"I was telling stories about tomfoolery, a little roughhousing on planes and whatnot, and I guess some of the phrases that I used may have rubbed people the wrong way or painted Cal especially in a light that was unfair,"

The funniest part about this is how much Zaun hates what Hayhurst wrote about...but at least he used fake names. I guess he was just too stupid to think this through.

Keith Olbermann roasting Zaun

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKBuzCOVqmg

Not much better than Zaun really. He mischaracterizes Zaun's postion about Lawrie (he made no assumptions) and trashes Zaun's career (total cheap shot). Reminds me of the Daniel Dennett quote: There's nothing I like less than bad arguments for a view that I hold dear. .

Olbermann is OK sometimes but he's just too over the top on occasion.

I don't always agree with Zaun but Olbermann is a complete douche. His rant made no sense and he picked everything apart with no context.

I guess when your arch nemesis is Papa Bear O'Reilly you have to become an idiot sometimes to resonate.
