Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Maybe the Yankees will flip him for Carrasco. lol... love the snark, North!
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 You think it is more to do with the player and less the character? FG writes have said for the last 2 months he will be traded and that it has to do with his makeup more than anything. He's not saying that definitively, it's a combination of both, likely.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Puig for prospects would make a lot of sense right now. Better flip those prospects for Trevor Plouffe though.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Buster Olney Keep hearing it from club execs: Ian Kennedy, who had a 4.28 ERA w/31 HRs allowed in 168 IP for SD in 2015, should take the qualifying offer Adios Ian!!
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Jeff Passan Braves listened on Andrelton Simmons last year, too. Talked an absolute blockbuster with Yankees that would've also included Justin Upton.

I would think the players union should be pressing some of the borderline FA's to take the qualifying offer. Basically nobody accepts it so teams can offer it with impunity an expect a pick back. It would probably go a long away to keeping some players for being offered it if there was a precedent of it being accepted.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 It doesn't help, sure, but Puig's batted ball numbers have been mediocre for a long time. I've been kinda nervous about him since he came up and still am. Projected for 135 wRC+. I'll take the under. f*** you

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Daaaaaamn Braves asked Harvey or deGrom for Simmons http://www.rotoworld.com/images/headshots/MLB/6780.jpg According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Mets checked in on the availability of Andrelton Simmons on Thursday morning and were told that it would take Matt Harvey or Jacob deGrom. Yeah, so that's not happening. ESPN's Jonah Keri reported Wednesday that the Braves have engaged in trade talks involving Simmons with at least one National League West team, and Buster Olney added Thursday that the Angels are also interested. Any team with a need at shortstop will be inquiring, but it's going to take a sizable return for the Braves to give up the 26-year-old defensive maestro. He's on a relatively team-friendly contract through 2020.

He's on a relatively team-friendly contract through 2020. From a pure value standpoint, the Mets should probably at least consider Harvey for Simmons. With Simmons, you're basically looking at a 15 WAR floor for 53 million over the next 5 seasons, which works out to at least 70 million in surplus value. With Harvey, you're looking at about 13 WAR over 3 years and some really expensive arb salaries and not much hope of a long term deal with Scott Boras as the agent. There's also the injury concerns and pitcher volatility. The fit is really nice for the Mets too with their pitching surplus and shortstop hole. I'd talk about it if I were Alderson.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 I'm not really sure why the Braves would want to do that, to be honest.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Seems pretty fair to me IMO. I think if I'm the Mets, I pullthe trigger on Harvey for Simmons.

I don't understand why the Braves think they would be more competitive with Harvey than Simmons, especially during the window before Harvey gets extremely expensive and leaves in FA. I think Simmons is a bit overrated, but I just don't see how that benefits their particular situation.

The Braves do a lot of things that don't make sense, but I guess they feel like Simmons is about to have a Bournian fall from grace.

Which is somewhat understandable if you look at the career arc of their former prospect, Elvis Andrus. If Simmons loses a step he becomes much less attractive, since he's consistently a sub-.300 wOBA bat. Conversely, his defense is better than Andrus' ever was, and his contract is a lottttttt better.

BTS Community Moderator Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Simmons is scary as a long-term building block. As soon as he loses a step he's finished as an above-average player.

He's a 26 year old generational defensive player. He could lose a dozen steps and still be a good defender. He'll probably play shortstop until he's 40 and be pretty awesome at it almost until the end.
