Weird pro-ball game played with speed rules:

 

3 balls = walk

foul on 3rd strike = out

 

Looks like it cut average game time by ~45 mins

Very interesting, a max of 5 pitches per PA.

It probably gives the edge to the pitchers though, that game ended 1-0.

If you have a tough pitcher on the mound, you can't extend the at bat in the hope to get him out of the game by the 7th inning because of a high pitch count.

Batters would definitely need to be more aggressive. I agree that scoring would probably be impacted.

ridiculous... the best part of a ballgame is the duel between a pitcher and batter, Welch-Jackson in 1978 might be the most dramatic duel ever.....

Alcides responded in Spanish saying "that's stupid, you meant to do it"

Alcides told the media that he was still waiting for an apology

Lawrie showed the media his cell phone with the texts

Alcides then showed the Royals PR guy his cell phone with no texts from Lawrie

 

So, either Lawrie got a wrong number and the person he accidentally texted responded in Spanish is if they were Escobar, or Escobar got the texts but then lied about it and then deleted them before showing the PR guy his empty phone.

I'll repeat, Escobar should've set his foot on the edge of the bag (like a 1B does) instead of on top of the bag since he knew it would be a close play.

 

How do I know 'he knew it would be a close play'? Well, simple, he stretched out like a 1B does to catch the throw.

 

Lawrie slid over the bag and his momentum carried him over the bag and onto Escobar's leg.

Despite being a traditionalist, I like this general idea, given the current state of things.

 

I'm involved in youth baseball, and participation has dropped dramatically - as in, halved - over the last 5 years. I've heard a number of the kids who are playing refer to it as boring. I see kids sitting and laying down on the field on a regular basis - much more than before, despite their coaches protests and demands. And that's at the comparatively fast youth level. The pro game, as it currently stands, will be unbearable for these kids. It doesn't help that actually attending a game, or a number of games, is too expensive for many families, reducing the ability of the "game day experience" to lure them in to fandom.

 

In today's world where kids want their info in 10 characters or less, and have a TV, phone and tablet going at once ... baseball will quickly become a flashback niche sport. And not allowing a batter to step out of the box isn't a pervasive enough change to bring them back.

 

Maybe those kids hate playing ball because their coach keeps striking them out with nasty sliders

Escobar was on the edge of the bag, on the edge that faces third. Lawrie actually could have been safe on the play if his primary intention wasn't to take Escobar out.

Lawrie ignored the base entirely and went in cleats up, catching Escobar's leg in an awkward position. Only after the collision happened did Lawrie throw his hand on the bag to legitimize his slide.

 

Lawrie is a goof and he deserved to get beaned but he did well to just take it with a smile and not muscle up again, throwing helmets at everybody.

+ 1 to all of this. I'd also add that Escobar should take the high road here, accept the damn apology and move on. Don't retro-actively vindicate Lawrie by being petty and childish.

LOL, no.

 

Escobar's foot was on top of the bag, not like a 1B positions his foot, you know, with the side of the foot touching the bag only. That's what he shouldv'e done.

 

It was a hard slide, not unlike Dejesus's on Travis this past week.

 

And yes, Lawrie's a goof, but these slides happen all the time. However, we know Mexicans are notorious for being emotional (just look at angrioter).
