Jeff Samardzija thinks Sabermetrics "sounds like a lot of hot air," and believes "a lot of money is wasted in Sabermetrics, in producing information and hiring people to produce information."

Congratulations Jeff, you're an idiot. He of all pitchers has benefited from sabermetrics. The A's probably only traded for him last year because that organization understood his real value (because of sabermetrics).

Just a little FYI, my friend had a job interview to work in the Jays' sabermetrics department. They were only offering $12.50 and hour (fulltime) though. And apparently they ended up just scrapping the position alltogether. So I guess that shows how much the jays actually care about advanced stats.

Maybe it means nothing though. Anyways, just some cool info.

was this for the coming season? My guess is they hired an intern instead. Sports teams are so cheap on employment for staff.

Huh? The A's drastically overpaid for Samardzija, and then traded him for pennies on the dollar.

They basically use these positions to steal intellectual property from naive young students, if it works out for them.

If it doesn't work out, they have a coffee fetcher who gets paid what he's worth.

Several posters here have done that job in the past, including HERPDERP and TheHurl (both ended up fetching a lot of coffee. So much so that TheHurl actually manages a Tim Hortons now).

That is their intern position. All of their FO interns are paid.

You just moved up past AA and the Braves.

Yes the interview was 2 weeks ago

You worked in the sabermetrics department? What is your education background like? They were asking for a "strong mathematical" background.

What did I do to earn NJH's wrath?!

Use ERA in evaluating pitchers?

Annoint Goins as our 2B of the future?!

Proclaim JPA as a future Mike Piazza?!!

Cause seriously, all I did was the last one.

Does your friend go to Waterloo?

No I didn't. Don't listen to NJH...ever. I've met 3 people that have interned there, had online conversations with another and known about 15 that got to the interview stage. Yes I'd say those that I met were brilliant math minds.

Thanks for the info! That's exactly what I wanted to know

You knew 15 people that were interviewed for the Blue jays saber-metrics department? Are you a compulsive liar? By the way, just so you know, I own 10 Lamborghini's and my wife is a Playboy model.

Was pretty fun. the roads were shite, so the turnout was pretty low, but some cute girls, played good music, drank some beers... Fun evening.

I went to a s*** hole late last night, they had a open jam, they(musicians) all knew you, haha!!

Lucky bastard.

My former wife was a hooker, but I'm not complaining about it, the best sex of my life. "The experience makes perfect."

Actually many were for the Baseball Ops internship. A couple years ago there were 4 guys on this board that posted the questions asked for the preliminary interview. Tercet, Jaysblue were two of them. I still have the questions if you wish to know what they are.

Posted

Here are those questions. The questions were the same in 2010, 2011 & 2012. Can't speak for the past two years.

Intern Candidate Questionnaire

General:

1) What baseball websites do you read? Which are your favorite and why? What are the most recent books you have read about the sports industry? What did you like or dislike about them?

2) Give a detailed description of a problem that you solved analytically—either at a previous job or in school. Please discuss your process for working through the problem as well as what you found. In hindsight, would you have handled things differently? Why or why not?

3) If given the time and resources needed, what’s the first question about baseball you would research and why? How would you go about conducting your research? How would this research benefit a MLB baseball operations department compared to publically available research? Do you see any potential obstacles in the way of your research?

Subjective and Objective Analysis:

1) Discuss the roles and relative importance of subjective and objective analysis in evaluating players, both at the amateur and professional levels.

2) What are "makeup" and "team chemistry" and what role do they play in baseball decision-making?

3) What’s the difference between a player’s ability and his performance?

Amateur Draft:

1) What factors do you think should be considered when making a selection in the amateur draft and why?

2) Discuss the implications that you see potentially arising out of signing bonuses being "slotted" in the new CBA.

Scouting:

2) Discuss the physical attributes and tools that you look for when scouting a starting pitcher. How important is each in projecting what his future role will be in the Major Leagues?

Hrmm... what shithole? And do you remember any of the musicians' names? I haven't been playing out a lot lately, but I do jam with a lot of people (and my "playing out" thing is about to hit an upswing, yay.)

You're an idiot. This is for an intern position, where they interview around 8 people every year for the position.

Why would you ever go to the Atria? That place is a nightmare... And yeah, I know a lot of people with beards :P I'm gunna guess there was a Dan and maybe a Kyle there...

After 1 on a Sunday...:P

Sounds right???

I do my best to avoid the Atria at any time on any night :P

Ditto, the only time I go there is on a late Sunday night. Any other night, you're asking to be stabbed, lol.

You're confused. It's statistically impossible that he knows that many people from a random pool of people.

Posted
That's not how it works though. They're not independent events. Once you know one, the probability of knowing another skyrockets. I can confirm that Hurl is not lying.

To be fair to him I wasn't clear that the interview stage is in several stages and the first being a written one. There are probably 100's each year that get to that stage and that is where many I know got to.
