Damn

I like Casey but would not have gambled on 5M

The Nats just continue to shuffle around without really improving their team. They are the best team on paper...but they always have been. I think they have spent an additional $30M this off season and there projection has barely changed. God help them if they don't win it this year.

Nats need 2B and OF depth.

Just like I feared, he gets more than twice what I thought he would. s***** deals like Duke and Janssen are really pushing the middle-of-the-road reliever market past an uncomfortable threshold. I really don't see how it's possible for guys like Badenhop, K-Rod or Ogando to make less than 5M after this, which is unfortunate for the Jays, because most of the guys that are still on the market probably just got priced out of their budget.

Worth noting: Casey Janssen will make ten times as much as Jesse Crain in the 2015 season.

They should try and get a guy like Souza. Actually 2B depends on your belief of whether Yunel recovers, and converts to 2B well.

might have to do what someone else suggested and find some mediocre starters for peanuts and toss them in the bullpen... find some s*** that sticks

Projections are just projections. At the end of the year, either they hit or miss them, I take them very lightly. They have a good amount of depth now, which is really important in case of injury. Their entire pitching staff is quite solid, starting to closing. They should have quite an easy time winning the NL east. They have an owner that wants to win.

So what do you use instead?

Congrats on calling Janssen-Nationals in the FAP Contest!

Janssen < a few other guys on the market, but Janssen @ 5 > nothing. I wonder if there's any more cash.

There would be if they would just get rid of Navarro, surprised he has lasted this long.

3.5m Salary with a 1.5m 2016 buyout. 5m guaranteed but not his actual salary for the year.

You know at that price, I think Casey just didn't want to come back to the Jays.

Nats are poised to win the NL East and we treated him like s*** in the 2nd half.

Doesn't help that Rogers doesn't have money anymore.

We don't know that the Jays ever put an offer on the table for him (or for any reliever for that matter).

Payroll is still comfortably under last year's. I wonder if the media takes Beeston to task if that remains the case. Probably not.

If it's true that a Navarro deal was getting held up by Rogers because he thought the O's would be interested in him for compensation, then hopefully a deal gets done sooner rather than later, now that the whole Duquette thing has been beaten to death and buried 6 feet under.

They won't. They've already drawn up so many ******** narratives about payroll themselves, what with the whole currency conversion thing and accounting for next year's buyouts. They wrote themselves into a corner, and they've essentially created all the excuses Rogers will need by themselves.

question wasn't for me, but (if we're talking about specific Jays who I see play every game of the season - and half of them in person) then why would I rely on what Steamer (or whoever) projects for their stats? ... if we're talking about players who I rarely see play then i'd be more likely to defer to the sophisticated number crunchers.

Interesting to see some of the responses...

We all know the BP needs work, but I'm curious how much people are willing to give up to fix it. Prospects? Salary? Ability to fill in other holes on the roster?

As BTS alluded to, is Janssen at 5 mil better than nothing at all?

Well, I'd have easily given Crain four times as much as what the White Sox game him.

They can probably still shore up the bullpen by only spending money on the free market.

I wouldn't give up any discernible assets for a relief guy unless someone like Holland, Chapman or Kimbrel hit the trade block.

I think Beest doesn't give any f***s now. The org doesn't think highly of him anymore and he now has a free pass until the end of the season.
