TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 It probably needs to be asked again... Tanaka at 22M or Stroman at 500K?
Horses Fart Old-Timey Member Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Bet you can't watch that video just once. LOL.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Stupid questions are stupid. Oh okay. I asked the same question two weeks ago, and 22 people on this board (out of 58 voters --- 38%) picked Tanaka.
baubau Verified Member Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Now if he could only teach Hutch the same pitch. Add that and study the kings change up (Sanchez should pay attention too) = ACE/S While not a sinker or change up, there is a decent article on Hutch's slider: http://www.bluebirdbanter.com/2015/1/5/7489853/drew-hutchisons-new-and-improved-slider Excited to see more of Hutch as well as Stroman next year with Martin. Also love Navy's expression when he was catching the sinker in that gif.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 A) They didn't understand the question. They aren't all there. The poll question was: Would you rather employ Stroman, Tanaka, Porcello, Archer or Cobb? The question buried in his post was: Taking everything into account (stats, scouting, stadium, salary, service time, Steamer and stints on the DL), who is your favorite starting pitcher going forward in the AL East? So yeah basically A)
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Oh okay. I asked the same question two weeks ago, and 22 people on this board (out of 58 voters --- 38%) picked Tanaka. IIRC I voted Tanaka in your poll but I didn't actually read your entire post which indicated at the end that we were considering salaries.

Well one guy costs 20M+ and has some pretty serious TJS concerns. How do people assume that the question doesn't include salary, injury history, and all other variables? I didn't ask "Who is the better pitcher?"
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 I think that the best thing to come from this article is that Stroman actually read it. I always appreciate when a player is curious and constantly looking to improve, and seeing concrete evidence support what he probably already had a good idea about over the season is probably going to give him even more confidence with the pitch and any other potential improvements he might think he can make.

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 How do you know he read it, did he tweet it or something? I made a fanboy twitter-mongrel-esque tweet about it to hopefully get him to notice the article, and then he subsequently favorited my tweet and two others'. http://i.gyazo.com/8d39bf4fb19fadd0d6066775c22b0a65.png

Add that and study the kings change up (Sanchez should pay attention too) = ACE/S Interestingly, Hutchison actually has more horizontal movement on his sinker than Stroman does. Link. But that doesn't mean it's a better pitch. Stroman throws it almost 2 mph faster and definitely has better command of it. Hutch's is much more of a 2-seamer - less vertical movement than Stroman's. His sinker got hit much harder than his 4-seamer did in 2014. I agree that if he could get some more traditional sinker movement on the pitch it would help Hutch a lot. His 2-seamers were only hit for groundballs 39% of the time.

Therefore it's measuring both left and right movement... if a pitcher is throwing pitches with both left and right movement wouldn't the data cancel itself out and you'd end up with a lesser #? Am I missing something?

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Stroman = Halladay? Damn I wish, too bad he isn't taller

JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 I'm sorry I started drooling once I read that. I hope that trend continues this year and for many years from here on. If Navarro helped out, imagine the framing Martin helping out.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 The movement on that sinker, coupled with Storman's size reminds me of Pedro...just sayin'
