Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 Let me ask you this.. If he hits .245 / .300 / .390 over the course of a full season, will he put up a 2.0 ? Goins .390 slugging? f*** that would be amazing
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 Tortilla has a rocket arm according to scouting reports. That's more reliable then you watching a couple of videos. Goins is an AAAA player. Good enough for spot duty. I just had just seen a report on SN yesterday (i think) that claims his arm doesn't play at SS in the MLB.

Goins hasn't approached a .390 SLG above AA... I'm not really the one to calculate WAR here, but at least put reasonable numbers out there, even if you generously gave him a .320 OBP that would be a bit more realistic than a .390 SLG.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 Goins .390 slugging? f*** that would be amazing He has the power, easily. Just has to put together good AB's.

Maybe it's a stretch, but he possesses the physical to do so, unlike Kawasaki.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 Ryan Goins ISO MLB: .087 MiLB: .098 2014 AAA: .069 GruberLB: .145
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 lmao @ Goins slugging 0.390

Let's step away from advanced stats for a sec. Look at the players last year who had around a .390 slugging percentage: http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/batting/_/league/al/sort/slugAvg/count/41/qualified/true Do you really think Goins can slug near .400? I certainly don't.

gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 AA should try and steal Infante from the Royals and keep Goins on the 25 man as a late inning defensive replacement. Navarro for Infante? Is it feasible?
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 Maybe it's a stretch, but he possesses the physical to do so, unlike Kawasaki. I really don't think he does. He hasn't shown the ability to do so above AA. And we have enough SLG on this team, I am more than okay with an OBP focused 2B... We all love Goins' glove at 2B, but he's got to contribute something with the bat to earn a starting role, and he has simply not shown that he can do that.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 Haha everyone jumping on the .390 SLG.

Navarro for Infante? Is it feasible? Do the Royals need a catcher? That's a legit question, because I don't think they do, but I'm really not sure.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 No, they really don't, Salvy + Kratz is more than enough
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 Let me ask you this... why on earth do you think he'll post a .390 slg%? Holy f***, i said it was a stretch on my part. Don't you f***ing read? STFU and stop trying to cause s***.

Navarro for Infante? Is it feasible? I like Infante, 4 years ago. But not now, he's gonna be Izturis soon. Tortilla is better for less money probably.

As others have said, he's not going to post JJ Hardy offensive numbers. But here's a rough WAR calculator: http://www.ryantansey.com/simplewar.html Last year league OBP and SLG were .314 and .386 respectively. But adjusted for the league and park those numbers should be higher for a Goins calculation.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 I like Infante, 4 years ago. But not now, he's gonna be Izturis soon. Tortilla is better for less money probably. He is. I think Infante has two years left at $10mil per. The Royals are listening to offers for him and i think Infante will get back to his old numbers with a scenery change and a hitter friendly park. The Hispanic angle could help also. Not a horrible DH replacement while saving $5 mil a season.

Navarro for Infante? Is it feasible? Only if the Royals take on some of the salary lol. He would be a good addition although, I prefer Lowrie.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 I'm pretty certain the Jays have made their 2B move in acquiring Travis so this could be a good signing as he could end up as the back up 2b/ss.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 Only if the Royals take on some of the salary lol. He would be a good addition although, I prefer Lowrie. What salary? Navarro is in his last year at $5mil, while Infante has two years left at $10mil per.

I'm hoping Travis makes the team right out of Spring Training, f*** it. Let's hope Gibby and AA is savvy enough to take Goins up with them and use him a late inning defensive replacement for Reyes. Reyes' ego will surely take a hit, but f*** him.

GD Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 Holy f***, i said it was a stretch on my part. Don't you f***ing read? STFU and stop trying to cause s***. If it's a stretch, then what the f*** is the point of arguing it? .245/.300/.390 is like a .300 wOBA if you go by The Book's approximation. That's about -0.5 wins. To be worth 2 wins, with those stats + his career averages otherwise, over a full season, Goins would have to be worth approximately 10 defensive runs. That's Russell Martin, Chase Headley territory. So, even with Goins' 99th percentile offensive projections, he'd still have to be Chase Headley on defense to be league average. If Goins' projections are to be believed on defense, he's probably worth about a win over a full season. In all, Steamer has him at 0.1. So: Goins with ... 99th percentile offense + gold glove defense = average MLB player Goins with ... 99th percentile offense + projected defense = Gordon Beckham/Munenori Kawasaki Goins with ... projected offense + projected defense = pretty f***in bad But yes, let's roll with Ryan god damn Goins.
