BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Someone's been busy during the winter meetings
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 WOOOOOOOOO f*** THE REDSOX cf
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Yeah this is a pretty ugly contract.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2014 Author Posted December 10, 2014 WOOOOOOOOO f*** THE REDSOX cf Word, I gave out a huge ass sigh when I saw this. Even if the Sox will lose in the long run had they signed him, I don't want to face him at all in the next year or two
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Lester picked a pretty good time to have a career year. Career low ERA and a four year high in K%.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 I'm not a big fan of Lester, and definitely NOT at that kind of contract. Starting with his first full season, he's had 3 excellent years deserving of that, but he's also had 4 forgettable (if you want to call yourself a 25M / year pitcher at least) ones. I strongly suspect the Cubs are going to really regret this.

Lester was above average but nothing special for the three years prior to 2014.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Scherzer to Boston? probably Hamels!
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 If it makes sense for any team, it's the Cubs. They don't have many positions where upgrades make sense, and they have a lot of payroll room. May not be good $/WAR but I don't think they care. They want the large upgrade. I'd argue that Scherzer might be worth that, but it would have made a lot more sense imo for the Cubs to have gone after Shields or someone like that. Excluding last year, as NJH mentioned, for the three previous years Lester's numbers were basically roughly a #2 starter, if that. I understand the logic of picking up a top of the rotation type guy and paying well for him, I just don't think Lester is the right one.
AmericanRockStar Verified Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Ha, they will trade the guy 3 maybe four years in. Just wait and see. I don't know how Soriano made it 6 years.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 @JonHeymanCBS: best winter so far. 1. cubs 1a. white sox At least we're not 'winning' the off season...according to heyman anyway.

Heyman is one of the most annoying on Twitter. Half the time he tweets garbage speculation and the other half he just tweets garbage like this. Maybe he meant winter meetings? White Sox are still a bad team...
Key22 Verified Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 (edited) We have upgraded but we've also detracted so we're not winning the off season. Sign Neshek and Gregerson and find an everyday 2B who can both field and hit and booyah we win the off season. Edited December 10, 2014 by Key22
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Miscalculation by the Red Sox thinking they would simply trade Lester for some valuable assets then simply resign him as a free agent.... oops. LOL
nmrch Verified Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Jon Lester averaged ~3.8 xFIP in the three seasons preceding 2014, and he'll be 31 on opening day, yeah this will work out great.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 I thought the title said "Lester to Cuba" lol. It's early in the morning and still half asleep haha.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 This is good news for us in all kinds of ways
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 This is good news for us in all kinds of ways Too soon to say that... If the Red Sox turn around and sign one of the big right-handers instead of Lester, that's not really good news. That's arguably worse than if they had signed the lefty.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 I thought the title said "Lester to Cuba" lol. It's early in the morning and still half asleep haha. I don't understand how this is good for the cubs. They are not going to make the playoffs this year. I hope other teams break the bank and commit ridiculous dollars to scherzer and shields as well. Next year Price, Fister, Latos, Cueto, Zimmerman, Iwakuma, Samardzija, Lackey, Porcello, Kasmir, Gallardo are all free agents. I'd much rather be players in next year's starting pitching free agent market and the Jays will have a lot of payroll cleared up for next year as well.
Cobean Verified Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 I would have much rather the Cubs drive up the price and the Sox follow suit and match. Lester is a good pitcher, being paid as an elite pitcher right now. Would have been great to see the Sox saddled with that contract before next years much better FA pitchers class. They will most likely go out and make some trades, mixed with value signings, which might be good for us in the short term but hardly much longer than a year.

Lester is younger than Shields and should still be good as their players develop. They probably won't have to worry about payroll for quite a while. By then, they can always flip Lester
ScientificReason Verified Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Glad we never paid that much for Lester, bad contract, not worth it.

They improved their team substantially and could afford the price. Seems like sound logic to me.
