gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 A half a season of defensive metrics is not stable unless you're going to tell me he's better than Andrelton Simmons Yeah you're right. He'd probably have better defensive numbers over a full season.

gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 Ryan Goins > Andrelton Simmons? See how s*** starts? Did i say that?
GD Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 Crazy eh? You can't possibly f***ing believe that Ryan Goins is better than Andrelton Simmons defensively
GD Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 See how s*** starts? Did i say that? s*** starts by saying that he'd post statistics that would make that true lmfao
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 Goins 7 DRS +150 innings >>> Simmons +30 DRS +1300 innings Simple math
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 You can't possibly f***ing believe that Ryan Goins is better than Andrelton Simmons defensively No, i'm saying that the numbers that Hurl posted are fact. There is plenty of evidence throughout his minor league career and a large enough SS in the bigs that boldly states he's a top tier defender. Do you think he's going to forget how to play defense? Defense does not go into slumps, but it can regress with age. Goins is nowhere near age regression, so yes the defensive numbers he's put up so far in the bigs are sustainable.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 I came here expecting to read about rizzo for president....and low and behold more talk about ryan f***ing goins. How is this guy the most talked about player on the jays. s***, we landed josh mother f***in Donaldson, Martin, and Saunders and barely a peep about these guys. But, ryan goins, yes let's talk about him more! I like the guy, cause of defense, but enough about ryan f***ing goins. I'm begging. Please.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 I wondered why the Beeston thread has grown to 21 pages and had to see what the fuss was about I'm convinced Gruber has a Goins poster on his bedroom ceiling
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 fun with Goins math. If he continued with the same bat and legs (or lack of legs) he's shown thus far in his career...has there been a defensive season at 2B in the past 25 that could bring him up to replacement level. The answer is 1999 Pokey Reese might get him up to replacement level. in the DRS era (2003 forward) Zobrist and his 27 runs saved in 2009 (albeit over 6 positions) would not be enough to get him to replacement level. Chase Utley's 2008 (30 defensive runs saved) would not be enough to get Ryan Goins to replacement level. The worst offensive season (of the past 25 years) of any second baseman in history to have enough PA's to qualify. Is a 47 wRC by Mike Lansing in 2000. If Gruber was in charge (oh god that would be so amazing) could Goins top that (his projection is a 67 wRC, for the 10th worst of this time frame)?

Defense does not go into slumps, but it can regress with age. Goins is nowhere near age regression, so yes the defensive numbers he's put up so far in the bigs are sustainable. 1.) Ryan Goins is going into his age 27 season. Position players peak around 25. lol 2.) You don't understand defensive numbers. They are skewed by chance and variation until a suitable sample size is reached, just like any other stat. Just because they happened does not mean they are likely happen again. If you look at Goins' skill per chance (UZR/play), he's closer to Starling Marte than anyone else in terms of defensive skill. Goins is near the top in opportunities (Plays/Inning), which skews his insane UZR, as it's an accumulated stat (even UZR/150 doesn't help this as some players get more Plays per Game which would skew that, making UZR/play the most effective). He's really not close to "top tier defenders" like Machado and Simmons whose numbers you seem to believe he can reach, even with the insane numbers he's posted that so far hasn't been enough to keep him employed. To somehow think he'll make another significant jump, at 27, based off of a gut feeling or GruberProjections or whatever you've got going on in there, is just... sigh.
Candy Maldonado Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 I for one do not want Goins' immature antics a part of my team. http://mlb.mlb.com/images/3/4/0/89000340/RPS1_2d6svhh7.gif

Goins ranked 112th in wRC+ out of the 119 2B that Steamer projects. At least he's projected to outhit Cesar Izturis though.

gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 It's unfortunate this board is filled with exaggerating , s*** disturbing nerds like Jimcanuck. I've said it a million times that Goins' bat will block him from getting a starting role in the bigs, but is a solid late inning defensive replacement / spot starter. It's too bad there punk f*** heads here that are just looking to entice me into an argument.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 Believe he is. Do not want. Only things I care about in a pres are: - business savvy - persuasive - open minded A guy like Tim Leiweke would be great. Probably knows dick all about baseball but leaves all the personnel decions to a GM. Dan Duquette being a good GM doesn't mean much unless we want him and AA to clash. Yet....ain't happening
