24 years ago today the Jays traded for Joe Carter & Roberto Alomar off the Padres for McGriff & Fernandez. Here's hoping the aquisitions being made this offseason put them back into the playoffs to end the drought.

I was in my dad's balls. Didn't even know it was happening.

I remember thinking that I couldnt believe we traded away mcgriff. I was ten, and it was before the days of internet and seeing NL games was limited to the 5-6 expos games per year that actually aired on tv. A couple months later I remember seeing highlights from a spring training game and saw the "new guy" make a an amazing dive on a grounder between second and third, leap to his feet and throw to first for the out. I thought "nice play! but isnt this guy supposed to play second base?" Oh how little I f***ing knew...

Trade was also about creating room for a guy named Olerud

Manny Lee too but he didn't work out as good

The advantage of a strong farm

At the time, the Jays had a great young team and a great farm

Carter+Alomar

1989: 5.6 WAR

1990: 1.0 WAR (-2.0 from Carter)

Trade

1991: 8.9 WAR

1992: 9.0 WAR

1993: 7.7 WAR

Fernandez+McGriff

1989: 10.0 WAR

1990: 10.4 WAR

Trade

1991: 6.1 WAR

1992: 7.0 WAR

1993: 7.6 WAR

Looks like a pretty bad trade at the time. Obviously hindsight worked out.

ya i think alot of the trade revolved around alomar's insane upside though. by far the youngest player in the trade and already a very good player. still, carter sucks. most overrated jay of all time

Meh, if Ryan Goins hits a walk off home run to win the World Series for us this year, he'll be in the same echelon. Carter may have been overrated (but, dem ribeyez were advanced metrics back then...), but he certainly contributed what is easily the most memorable moment in franchise history.

It was like a deal with the devil.

Devil - You can have 2 world series wins. Do you take it??

Fans - 2 world series wins?? Do I have to sell my soul??

Devil - No worse. The Gm that built it will leave soon after. The president and manager will underrate the young talent and overrate the rbi guy who pulled the winning homerun into the left field bullpen. You will have two world series wins but then nothing for a generation. And years from now the same president and manager will still be there talking about rbis and pulling the ball, even as the rest of baseball is using advanced analytics.

My favorite story is the one when Gillick called his wife from Chicago to tell her about the trade. Paraphrasing, she said "YOU DID WHAT? YOU TRADED WHO?? Get back home to Toronto right away before you screw up the team more"

I think everyone freaked out when this trade happened. Of course I was 9, so I wasn't exactly surrounded by baseball savvy people at the time, but everyone loved the two guys being traded away. Of course everyone also pretty quickly got over it.

Beeston's still stuck in the nostalgia.
