ScientificReason Verified Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 I think this club is in a position that it needs to overpay to get Lester. The window with JB/EE is really this year and next. They can't go half ass and just hope everything falls into place, the SP is relying on a 35 year old and 40 year old to be the #1 and #2. They need an ace right now, even if it means overpaying. I think they are relying more on the young guys to keep improving like stroman and hutch, you know what you get with MB and dickey.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 These are hard conversations - son - "Daddy where do aces come from??" father - "Son... it's complicated." son - "I think I know how it works. They have a mommy and a daddy and they love each other and have a baby, and the baby grows and does little league, and high school, and sometimes college, and rookie league, and the arizona fall league, and the eastern league, and triple a, and then they come to the majors, sometimes they struggle, but they keep trying and they have talent and after years and years of development with a little luck and talent they become an ace!" father - "who told you that?? Liberal hogwash. Don't listen to that crap. Aces are... just aces. They are just so. They have no beginning or end. An Ace is an Ace. You'll know it only when you see it, and then you have grab the ace. Even it it's 143 million dollars."

xposbrad Verified Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Stroman Hutchison and Sanchez say Hi Stroman is already pencilled in. Hutchison should be at the back end of the rotation, and who knows on Sanchez. He has what, a grand total of 33 innings pitched, and how many games started? That's not going to change the fact this team should be all in on Lester and time for Sanchez to develop is not available since we went over how JB/EE are here for this year and next.
Dr Negative Verified Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 I think another SP is needed because of the brutal attrition rate on young pitchers. I'd be much more comfortable with Sanchez waiting in AAA to step in. It seems to me that McCarthy represents the best chance of getting value on the FA SP market but even he might take a 4 year commitment and it will probably be hard to get him out of NY since I think the Yankees want to keep him.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 I think we need a legit #1. We need that guy to be successful in the playoffs if we make it. In the last 10 years the team that won all had a true Ace, a guy they could count on. And plus, it would make our rotation look so much better. #1 Pitcher(Lester/Shields) Dickey Buehrle Hutch Stroman Estrada as #6 Sanchez in the bullpen for the year. Let him start next year.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Stroman projects to be that ace. Well then even better, we'll have 2. I also didn't realise how good the Stroman actually was last year. 2.84 FIP, 1.9 BB/9. And his numbers look even better if you take out his first batch of games where he was being used in relief.
ScientificReason Verified Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Stroman projects to be that ace. We'll have to wait and see I hope that is the case.
LongTimeReader Verified Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Honestly projections for upcoming and old players are probably the weakest metric in baseball analytics... I would put almost no stock in them.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 How about signing Shields and trading Dickey/Thole for a 2B? Then trade Navarro for a reliever to save more money, and invest whatever is left in the pen.
flafson Verified Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 This does not make sense whatsoever, save money to keep up with salaries. That isn't saving It does make sense. To the public it looks like we are saving money. Internally, AA may know we are already over budget so he need to cut the payroll to stay within budget.

In the last 10 years the team that won all had a true Ace, a guy they could count on. Don't you think this is kind of a senseless narrative? The way I look at it, if you have three guys you can count on in the playoffs, you run those first three out, hope for 2 wins, and then repeat. If they're good, it happens more often then not. If it gets to a game 7, it's a coin flip anyway. Let's be real with ourselves, the playoffs are a coin flip regardless. The goal should be to make the playoffs, and hope for the best from there. The playoffs are too small of a sample size to really indicate who the best team is, honestly.

Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 You mean dickey, buehrle, stro won't take us to the promise land? Dickey and Buehrle need to be replaced....maximum only one of them should start the season on the team.

Jiminy Cricket Verified Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 My thoughts on this subject. if you have any additional information on potential targets for the bolded part of my comment, please let me know your thoughts: This seems to be the all in point for Rogers. Rogers, in general over the last few years have been focusing on all sports; as a blue chip piece being used to entice people into keeping their cable subscriptions. Regarding hockey; NHL center ice rights were given to Rogers, and there is a current court battle on the matter having been launched by the other Telco’s. They feel it is unfair Rogers has certain features unlocked for only their customers. This, and other pieces of information available; coinciding with the events that have transpired over the past few days;would lead us to believe that the blue jays will push for one of the best pitchers available, by trade or free agent signing. Signing a tier - two free agent pitcher (I personally like this move) doesn’t really fit Rogers MO. This move would be used to attract attention to the brand itself. I also am starting to believe that AA was on a leash the past few seasons by one, if not multiple branches of Rogers’s executive structure. I am so f***ING HAPPY about how this offseason has transpired. The Blue Jays have cleared up enough money under their internal cap to make the above a reality (and more with a Navarro trade). If the Blue Jays were to land a high end SP; find a minor BP upgrade; and an upgrade or contingency plan at 2B …………FAPFAPFAP
