Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 Maybe I'm nuts, but... 1. Reyes 2. Melky/Fowler/Markakis 3. Donaldson 4. Edwin 5. Pompey/Pillar 6. Tolleson/Izturis 7. Goins/Izturis 8. Navarro (currently, but he won't be around) 9. Martin Rather see the offence spread around a bit, doesn't give the opposing pitcher an inning "off", Martin essentially becomes a second leadoff hitter as the game wears on. Tough to do this without a final roster. This probably wouldn't be a permanent lineup either, but I'd experiment with it. This is definitely one of the most idiotic things I have seen on the internet this year. Congrats. "Spreading the offense around" is a terrible concept. It would just mean more stranded baserunners. Not to mention you want your best hitters hitting higher in the lineup so they get more at-bats.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 PA/game*LeverageIndex/PA suggests the optimal lineup is as follows. In order of placing your best hitter: 1 4/2 (more SLG of the second and third best goes 4th or more OBP goes 2nd) 3/5 (more SLG of the 4th and 5th best goes 5th or more OBP goes 3rd, if they are similar in both ways than the better baserunner goes 5th) 6 7 8 9 Say you rank your hitters as follows: Bautista Encarnacion Donaldson Martin Reyes Navarro Travis Pillar Pompey Optimal lineup would look something like: Bautista Donaldson (EE has more power) Martin (more OBP than Reyes, Reyes better baserunner) Encarnacion Reyes Navarro Travis Pillar Pompey That's a slick lineup, but no way Gibbons has the stones to bat Reyes 5th...

TRM Verified Member Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 That's a slick lineup, but no way Gibbons has the stones to bat Reyes 5th... I'm pretty sure Bautista would throw a fit if he was batted first.

Or maybe you are just really REALLY stupid. Did you flunk out of elementary school or did you just start watching baseball this year? If you share your idiotic ideas on the internet you deserve to be criticized for it.

And if you act like the **** droppings of Miley Cyrus, you deserve to be mocked in kind. Perhaps you might try a more constructive criticism such as JFaS did, rather than taking shots without providing any substance as to how you came to the conclusion that I am an idiot. I don't have the time to spend calculating optimal lineups and taking every detail into consideration as you apparently do. I made a quick post with a lineup off the top of my head while trying to convince my 13 month old daughter to stop screaming. Forgive me if my lineup is not up to the glorious intellectual standards of Stangstag, you unbelievable twat.

ineedsheet Verified Member Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 That's ridiculously dumb. The 9 spot gets the least plate appearances by far. That's where your worst hitter goes. Sometimes if your worst hitter is very very bad than you put them 8th and the next worst 9th. This should only be done with hitters like Bartolo Colon. If you want a "second leadoff hitter" put them 1 and 2. actually modern sabermetrics disagrees with you completely. worst hitter usually 8th, contact guy with high baserunning skills 9th

jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Change thread title to "your 1 to 6" batting order.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 actually modern sabermetrics disagrees with you completely. worst hitter usually 8th, contact guy with high baserunning skills 9th Yeah. JFaS is pretty out of touch with modern SABR. ...not.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Could Saunders hit 2nd? vs RHP yeah. Probably better to just bump everyone up though.
RIPEXPOS Verified Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 vs RHP yeah. Probably better to just bump everyone up though. While he lacks power against lefties, he still gets on base against them. I'd be happy just penciling him into that spot.
ineedsheet Verified Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Not sure where you are getting this from. there have been plenty of articles mentioning this--i'm too lazy to google. cardinals for better or for worse have always been more inclined to use modern tools and sabermetrics to optimize their lineups, and alot of times have hit the pitcher 8th. for whatever its worth, they were also one of the first teams to go away from the 'contact hitter dude in the 2 hole' and just put their 2nd best OBP guy there, which you seem to agree with. basically having your 9th hitter interact with the top of your order provides more value than the additional ABs the 8th place hitter would receive throughout the season. generally this doesn't apply to AL lineups as the worst hitter in an AL lineup is going to be alot better than a pitcher, but i think for a lineup as polarized as the jays there are significant arguments to be made for putting a guy like pompey at the bottom of the order. (especially if goins is in the lineup) it certainly isn't as black and white and obvious as you claim.

ineedsheet Verified Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Yeah. JFaS is pretty out of touch with modern SABR. ...not. why don't you actually contribute something to the discussion instead of riding someone else's dick?
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 why don't you actually contribute something to the discussion instead of riding someone else's dick? lmao.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 why don't you actually contribute something to the discussion instead of riding someone else's dick? Seriously though. Welcome to the board. It was just funny when you called JFaS out by saying SABR disagrees with him as he's probably the most SABR guy on the board. No hard feelings.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 While he lacks power against lefties, he still gets on base against them. I'd be happy just penciling him into that spot. Why? You have Donaldson who absolutely mashes LHP, not to mention Bautista and EE as well. 1-5 vs LHP should be Reyes, Donaldson, Bautsita, EE, Martin no matter what.
ineedsheet Verified Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 That shocks me, as what I'm talking about is probably a half decade old and has been discussed extensively on places like fangraphs. Although circumstances are definitely different in the AL.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 That defeats the purpose of spreading the offense around the lineup. 1-5 looks great, 6 7 8 9 is crap right now. By moving one of them down the lineup, the players hitting in front of him see better pitches, maybe they put up better numbers. 6789 not looking so bad, Navarro Saunders Smoak Pompey. Looks better than any combination of tolleson, rasmus, kawasaki, gose, pillar, mayberry jr, goins. I do think Pompey will have a better chance at being useful @ 9th than Gose last season

Navarro will be traded though
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 6789 will likely be Saunders Smoak Travis/Izturis/Goins Pompey
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Haha that's right, forgot about that.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Honestly the Jays should just release Izturis and eat the 3 milllion. I can't see him providing any value at all. Travis at 2B and Goins has the utility infielder is probably the best option if the season started tomorrow.

fireballW Verified Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 There is a chance Izturis is better than Goins so I don't see why we would do this yet.
