TORONTO – Preparing to formally introduce prized addition Russ Martin on Thursday, the Toronto Blue Jays continue to be linked to Pablo Sandoval although they don’t appear to be hot after the free agent third baseman at the moment.

Industry sources told Sportsnet colleague Ben Nicholson-Smith and myself the Blue Jays haven’t made any offers for Sandoval, but remain in the mix for him. After signing Martin for $82 million over five years, it’s believed they aren’t actively engaged with any free agents at the moment.

Multiple reports out of Boston say the Red Sox have an offer on the table for Panda, and they appear to be the front-runners for him.

Sandoval would certainly be a fit for the Blue Jays given their need for either a second or third baseman and a left-handed power presence to support Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion. A meeting between his agent and the club last week at the GM meetings was said to have gone well, but nothing sounds imminent.

Sportsnet One and sportsnet.ca will carry the Martin news conference live starting at 2 p.m.

Asked Jays source if I could shoot down rumour of Sandoval offer from team in next 24 hours. "With a bazooka," was the response.

Oh, Jim.

Can't even follow your own arbitrary guidelines. For the record, none of what I said was ad hominem. The ideas were stupid and labled as such. We all have bad ideas. This was a bad idea. Get over it.

Trading Hutch for a league average 2B (who probably make more $) is cutting your nose off to spite your face.

Signing Shields and moving Hutch (or Happ+) for a league average 2B or better is what I suggest. Do you have a comprehension problem?

But you seem to prefer signing a fat overrated player like Panda to a 5 year contract.

Don't u feel that AA is just going to try and sneak his offer in to try and stay away from a bidding war? Wasn't the Russ Martin thing overnight?

That mean an offer has already been made.......

His source probably sucks cause he's always wrong, but what do I know.

His source is Howarth, Howarth's source is Buck, Bucks source is a drunk Beeston.

Actually sounds like something Beeston would say, but he's not dumb enough to open his mouth during contract negotiations.......is he?

It really DOES sound like something the Beest would say.

AA is going to back load the contract and offer him 100+mill. If we do get Panda i hope he trades Lawrie for a nice piece or 2. Maybe a Grandal?

Grandal would be a great pick up if we didn't just sign Martin for 5 years.

I'd much rather sign a Cuban 2nd baseman and keep Lawrie where he is. Has Olivera has any show cases. Any news on his health. Ang you heard anything?

6. Hector Olivera, 2b, Santiago De Cuba

Olivera is out of Cuba and on his way to a major league contract. It’s somewhat surprising that he left, given that he turns 30 in April, has had serious health issues with blood flow that sidelined him for more than a year and kept him off the Cuban national team, and his dad is a former player on the national team. Like I said, Olivera was the most challenging player on this list to rank, because while he’s flashed exciting potential when healthy, there’s a lot of unknown regarding his health and present skill set. Yasmany Tomas is getting more attention right now because he’s closer to signing with a major league team, but had Tomas still been in Cuba at the time of these rankings, I would have put him behind Olivera (again, with the caveat that there’s a lot of uncertainty over Olivera). He’s one of the most fascinating players to follow this winter.

A bazooka?? Who's his source, the WWII war vet he rents a basement off? Actually sounds like something Beeston would say, but he's not dumb enough to open his mouth during contract negotiations.......is he?

you should have taken that the other way, he's not smart enough to keep his mouth shut and he's always had too much to say. lol

Beat me to it. I do not know how credible Blair is. Anyone know?

Blair thinks "inside track" is where Nascar cars get their tires changed.

Id say Shields isn't a clear upgrade on Stroman at all. I'd rather have Stroman next season than Shields.

True, Shields is not a clear upgrade on Stroman. IMO, there is still some uncertainty over Stroman, sophomore jinx and all, whereas Shields is close to a lock for 230 IP and 4 WAR.

A starting 5 of Shields, MB, Dickey, Stroman, and Happ is damn strong in a contending year. And Hutch returns at least an average 2B in trade (Cubbies).

Then after MB leaves, you still have Shields and Dickey to lead the youngsters, Stroman, Norris, Sanchez in 2016. As it stands right now, in 2016 there will be Dickey, Happ, and the aforementioned youngsters.

Shields makes a lot of sense now and going forward.

and as expected I got a season ticket email from the Jays today. You have a GM that doesn't prescribe to value in any way, and has once again been told by his owners to spend. Take the overall upgrade to the team and be happy if it happens. You want playoff baseball in Toronto, this is the way you are going to see it. He's never going to build a winner with a 100M payroll on his own.

WTF, I hope he signs with Boston instead. Not a big fan of fat f***s + he is overrated and overpriced.

Easy 3 win player, good defender, good hitter. I like him quite a bit.

He's a good player and all but Headley is clearly a superior player. It looks like the Panda is getting overrated because he's won a couple World Series.

He's not a superior player, the difference is slight between the two. Headley has a wonky back and Sandoval is fat. Pick your poison

His age helps.

And?

be happy that he's spending money. You might see a playoff game. Sandoval gets you there closer than what you have right now. Yes, Headley will have greater value and come cheaper and I truly believe he's on AA's radar...but if the Jays sign Panda it's an improved team from this morning.

Headley's a great defender, Pablo's what, slightly above average? Their bats are pretty similar

Panda has a better bat but Headley's defense makes up the difference and then some by quite a bit.
