GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 I'd rather sign Victor Martinez. Because at 36, don't have to commit to long term contract Isn't he looking for a 3-4 year deal?
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 Isn't he looking for a 3-4 year deal? Yes and he's going to get it. Beltran got 3/45 last offseason being eight months older than Martinez is now and coming off a substantially inferior season. Beltran supposedly had suitors other than the Yankees who were willing to go to three years as well.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 JonHeymanCBS Francisco cervelli traded to pirates for Justin Wilson AA do it!!
shortstop Verified Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 I would like us to sign Martinez as well. This guy is just a great hitter. Who will hit for more power. In a couple years Melky probably won't be able to run either. Hes barely passable in LF. Back to Martin though. You give this guy what he wants to get him here. Catching is the most important position in baseball. Especially one who can hit, get on base, and can run a little bit hes no clogger thats for sure. Agreed about Martin. And I gotta think he would enjoy the prospect of catching 4 days & maybe DHing every 5th day.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 I love the idea of getting Martin more and more as I think about it. Should be underpaid because the market doesn't value defense enough. Should be underpaid (again) because the market doesn't seem to value framing much at all. Would be great to have a fantastic framer and game caller if we are going to rely on young pitchers to carry us. Has some nice on-base skills. A nice marketing bonus to have 3 Canadians on the roster (obivously doesn't affect the decision to sign him, but a 'fun' bonus). Sign this guy!

Would be pretty huge... Actually, you could probably sign any other free agent and not get a 5 win upgrade. Any of the big ticket SP would only project to be maybe a 2-3 win upgrade on poo like Happ. Hanley and Sandoval only project to be 3.3 and 3.8 win players (so you'd have to assume the Blue Jays 2B is about well below replacement for them to be equivalent upgrades). Martin projects for 3.2 with no framing, and he's likely a +15 or +20 framer. (Navarro projects for 1.6 wins but he's on the complete opposite end of the framing spectrum). And obviously Martin could cost half as much as all those names. + Canadian
TDotttt2005 Verified Member Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 Promising twitter banter here... Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal 13h13 hours ago Caveat to earlier report on #Cubs as leader for Martin: #BlueJays still could be in mix. #Tigers feared TOR would outbid them for VMart. Peter Gammons @pgammo 3m3 minutes ago @Ken_Rosenthal You were right on Toronto, as ever, according to my latest text @Ken_Rosenthal Martin will be a huge sign for Jays 0 replies 11 retweets 3 favorites
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 This is not trolling. It's real (for anyone else who wondered the same thing) https://twitter.com/pgammo/with_replies Martín will or could a huge sign for the Jays?

I am not good with stat crunching.
