Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 Maybe they'll trade Happ now for similar savings? Happ + Nolin for Kendrick?
xposbrad Verified Member Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 Looks like the payroll slashing is full on. Garbage trade. Love the way AA has really molded this team into complete crap with no future. Looks like the Jays have 2 #5 pitchers now.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 Miller park is quite homer friendly too, the Jays obviously expect some positive regression in his hr rate and overall numbers. Look at the 3 preceding seasons, xFIP's of 3.58, 3.48 and 3.63. Now obviously none of these are full seasons and Estrada would never go back to being that pitcher so its a gamble no doubt about that, but it might be a worthwhile gamble when you're giving up an equally flawed player like Lind whose value people keep overestimating because he's being protected against LHP. In the real world Lind is worth significantly less than his WAR suggests because the team holding him has to burn a roster spot just to cover up his shortcomings. I'm starting to be swayed to at least look at the other side of this deal. If AA can trade Happ for something decent...we'll have to wait and see.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 I don't get why you make this move so quickly? It's not like Estrada or a similar pitcher wouldn't be available later in the offseason, and maybe something better comes along in the mean time... Underwhelming return jumped on too quickly...
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 Looks like mcgowans option is declined, nice!

I was hoping Lind would get moved and really didn't expect much more than a RP, but I did hope that if it was for a RP it would be a near league min guy. Truth be told Estrada isn't terrible, but I'm just not sure he adds the value this team needs. We have solid SP depth and the pen can be fixed for cheaper alternatives.

ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 Happ + Nolin for Kendrick? I like Nolin, but getting Kendrick without much of a payroll increase sounds good.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 Happ + Nolin for Kendrick? We're not getting a 3+ win player for Happ + a scrub.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 The idea behind trading Lind for a reliever was saving $7 million. This move costs them a win while saving like $3.5 million. If they view Estrada as a reliever, then this is a terrible deal imo. I think he's going to be starting though, in which case I think this is actually pretty decent.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 Odd is Estrada stats look good once he was in the pen and used in a relief role! Not sure what the Ninja is doing this off season based on the last 48 hrs, nothing makes sense so far! Bizzaro world ! Lol One would hope there is a plan or method to this madness, not just a dart board!

I think he's going to be starting though, in which case I think this is actually pretty decent. I'm not sure what to think about how he should be used. As a starter he's probably like a 4.25+ ERA 4/5, which isn't really needed at all as things stand.

This move costs them a win while saving like $3.5 million. That's true, but Estrada brings more versatility than a reliever. Overall I agree, it's a pretty bad deal considering they basically swapped Lind for Smoak and Estrada and saved what like 1 million?
LongTimeReader Verified Member Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 Yeah, I don't have a big problem with this, although I would have preferred to get some cheap bullpen arms rather than pay 3-4M each for them on the open market. I suspect AA will now turn around and trade Happ, with Estrada replacing Happ at lesser cost (or he's planning to trade Buehrle, and needs to protect himself for the lost innings). Estrada's xFIP last 4 years: 3.58, 3.48, 3.63, 4.19 Check his SIERA now
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 So who would you prefer as a 5th SP, Estrada or Happ? Neither will be the 5th starter....as of now Buehrle, Stroman, Dickey, Hutchison, Sanchez....Norris, Nolin, (6th and 7th)...Happ 8th and Estrada 9th as of now.
Burgers Verified Member Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 We're not getting a 3+ win player for Happ + a scrub. Kendrick and Cron for Sanchez and you got yourself a deal, sir.

That doesn't make it a good deal, but at least the bullpen is improving.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 Kendrick and Cron for Sanchez and you got yourself a deal, sir. Cron is bad, but I'd probably do that. One year of Kendrick + comp pick is more valuable than Sanchez IMO, especially with the team at least notionally looking to compete.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted November 1, 2014 Author Posted November 1, 2014 Now McGowan's option (and Smoak's as expected) are declined.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 Now McGowan's option (and Smoak's as expected) are declined. Best news in awhile. Hopefully he goes away.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 So now we know who Estrada replaces in the BP.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 Check his SIERA now SIERRA: 3.28, 3.26, 3.43, 3.90 In reality, if he's replacing Happ, then we basically just upgraded our 5th starting pitcher, and saved a few million in the process. Happ likely brings a similar return (if not more) than what Lind would have anyway. We'll have to see how it plays out though.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 So we're just waiting on Morrow and Thole's options now?
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 He has a chance to become a good late inning pitcher. That doesn't make it a good deal, but at least the bullpen is improving. Never said it was a good deal but it might fill a pen need agree!

BTS Community Moderator Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 SIERRA: 3.28, 3.26, 3.43, 3.90 In reality, if he's replacing Happ, then we basically just upgraded our 5th starting pitcher, and saved a few million in the process. IMO Lind carries more value around the league than Happ. You rarely see 5th starter types with not-insignificant salaries return much of anything.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 So we're just waiting on Morrow and Thole's options now? I fully expect Morrow to be declined.

Yeah, I'm (wishfully?) thinking Happ could get traded for a cheaper player and Estrada would replace him. The team needs to save $ wherever it can. Whether they'll actually improve the team is the big question mark.

BTS Community Moderator Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 I fully expect Morrow to be declined. Me too. Surprised it hasn't been yet.
