burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Gross. He has been terrible for a while. Edit: Apparently he has a 3.65 million option next year and if that declines still will head to arb. If they play to keep him he is probably just a waste of money for a team that has a lot of holes and not much $.
vdartanian Verified Member Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Maybe Seitzer might be able to fix what's wrong with his swing, Oh wait.....
wardhenke1 Verified Member Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 AAA depth or Lind's replacement?
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 He's more interesting than 95% of the players AA claims on waivers. I like this.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Now we trade Lind to seattle for Patrick Kivelhan! Or Dustin ackley maybe?
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Switch-hitting 1B, might be insurance so they can move Lind now. Though cheaper than Lind he isn't better value but maybe his value + (whatever the Lind return is) adds up to something good. I don't love the move but it sets up intriguing possibilities.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Smoak was a big time prospect at one time. Not sure he amounts to anything, but definitely worth taking a flier on. Also, he'd be cheaper than Adam Lind next season.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Interesting. Also looks like Seattle is just about done with Saunders as Jack Z called him out, so maybe a Lind for Saunders swap?
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Would a Lind trade signal a Smoak/ Mayberry platoon at first and Edwin can be a full time DH ?
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Not a bad player to take a flier on, really. Hopefully getting out of Safeco can help him finally turn his career around.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 this is a fine pickup. Doesn't cost us anything to take a shot on a former elite prospect.
CHRIS Verified Member Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Switch-swinging 1B, might be insurance so they can move Lind now. Fixed.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 this is a fine pickup. Doesn't cost us anything to take a shot on a former elite prospect. Potentially, he costs 4 million.
CHRIS Verified Member Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Still, as waivers claims go, not too bad. Have a bad feeling though that AA will replace Melky and Lind with Pillar and Smoak and then call it day.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Lind for Saunders in 3...2...1
glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 They will no doubt decline his option and go to arbitration. He's been terrible though. Might be better off with Francisco.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 As a waiver claim its interesting..... Get him out of the death trap for hitters that is Safco and get him into our bandbox... Never know.... Through the minors it has looked like he could take some walks. Hopefully another big time hitter that can flourish in Toronto lol.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Ya Francisco > Smoak I don't thing so. Smoak breakout season is near.
TDotttt2005 Verified Member Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Don't we already have a has been/never will be who knows how to take a walk in Dan Johnson who Gibbons didnt use?
glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Smoak knows how to walk so if he has one flukey BABIP season he might be useful, but he's all kinds of awful.
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Having him on the 25-man would be gross (assuming he has no options). That's a long ways away though.
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Can someone please ban longtime reader? Thx.
TDotttt2005 Verified Member Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Having him on the 25-man would be gross (assuming he has no options). That's a long ways away though. OH god, its 6-months away and i'm already getting irked by AA talking about keeping this guy on the roster because hes out of options.
LongTimeReader Verified Member Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Can someone please ban longtime reader? Thx. Why? AA trolls us, I troll the board... makes perfect sense. In any case season is over, I could care less.
LongTimeReader Verified Member Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 I've reported him. Hoping to hear back soon. Congratulations: you're a woman now! Exciting times ahead!

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Smoak's career road splits are quite a lot better than his home ones (mostly due to a babip more in line with what you'd expect to see). It's possible he's doing something different in Safeco, or for some reason just doesn't see the ball well there.
Brenner Verified Member Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 I can see Smoak working out here, he has power and he will take a walk, seems like an AL east type of hitter. EE to DH fulltime and some combo of Smoak/Valencia/Mayberry could work at 1b at replacement level with upside while also adding depth at other positions. Clearly this opens the door for a Lind trade, and the return for him could fill a roster hole elsewhere (i.e 2b/SS or even the bullpen). Overall the team could be improved pending the return on Lind.
