And this is kids we're talking about playing soccer.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 Not the same turf the Jays and Rays have. And this is kids we're talking about playing soccer. Far too rational an answer. You don't seem to understand scaremongering.

GD Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 I understand the aches and pains but its hurts just as much to dive on grass. No. No, it does not. It really, really does not.
Governator Community Moderator Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 Ah.. finally something sig worthy.
LongTimeReader Verified Member Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 I guess you're a pussy? Seriously the turf I play on is extremely comfortable. Nobody whines about it at all. Would I prefer grass yes obviously but really its a non issue made into a huge deal. With that being said all baseball should be played on grass. But all Baseball should also be played outside and not in a s*** box made of cement. I don't give a s*** if its rainy or cold its a f***ing outdoor sport. Would you do a running head-first slide on that s*** at Rogers Centre? I sure wouldn't want to... but grass, sure no problem. And it's not whether it's actually a big deal or not.. it's whether it's steering free agents away... and it definitely is... we know this.
Governator Community Moderator Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 I think our infield being all turf is more of a disgrace than having turf over grass.
CHRIS Verified Member Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 Is there something different between the turf used by the Jays and that used in the NFL? It seems to be widely more accepted in the NFL as a legitimate playing surface. Maybe because it stands up better to a more physical game?

Grass is significantly more comfortable.
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 This should have been fixed years ago. This is something they could fix now. Agreed. I've never understood the little squares. I can't see it being that much more of a pain to make the IF all dirt anyway.
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 If I recall correctly a lot of issues with the Jays' turf is, as mentioned earlier in the thread, from having to be placed down, removed, placed down again, removed, yet again placed down to ad nauseum because of the multiple purposes and re configuring that goes on. A few players really bitched a couple years ago and you could see patches of it where it looked like someone ran it over with a snow blower. I'm making an assumption here but if it were permanent instead of constantly being pulled up it might be better. Then again I don't know since I'm not the grounds crew or know much about it. I think it would also come down to what is underneath the turf too. I know it has its own padding and such but what's under the turf itself ie concrete or such might make it worse. It would be nice if they would just go to grass already. It's easier said than done considering everything they use the place for but it might make a world of difference in some cases or in some minds. I'd rather the Jays' be in a different stadium all together but we know that's not going to happen. I fear the turf is here to stay even beyond this BS projection they keep giving us about installing it. They keep replacing it and spending money on turf which I think would be better used for grass or even temporary grass but hey I'm not the people making the call. I'd rather see some ripped up sod/grass out there even if they have to move it around for the Argos or whatever but I'm not in charge. Maybe they really will have some issues with drainage or keeping it alive in under the best case scenario since this concrete tomb was never designed for grass in mind.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 I understand the aches and pains but its hurts just as much to dive on grass. apparently you've never heard of turf burn. If the grass is done properly it is a little loose close to the surface so you cut up a divot instead of scratching across the top. If the jays dont at least put a dirt base path for next year the FO is ridiculous.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 the RC could grow their own grass outside the park and put it in for games and then move it out again after the team goes on the road again. they did it for Soccer games in the world cup when they played in the USA. takes about the same amount of time to lay out as the turf. http://www.strathayr.com/getattachment/Turf-Systems/Removeable-Natural-Turf-System/Reliant-Stadium-side-module-view.JPG.aspx?width=438

LongTimeReader Verified Member Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 I think the turf at Rogers Centre is so rough because its not permanent. I want grass I just think the players are making excuses. And I want grass because baseball should be played on grass. If that helps fine with free agents great. I think thats a load of crap and that comes by winning. I know Beltran said he was concerned about the turf and actually signed for less money with the Cardinals. But they are also a team that competes for a world series every year. I don't buy it. This stadium has been a nightmare to begin with. I can't believe they ever approved this ugly piece of s***. Outside of Tampa we should be next in line for worse stadium in baseball. They will never tear down Wrigley or Fenway. But I have played rep indoor soccer on turf. I have played tons of other sports on turf including Baseball and Football. I have never had an issue. I dive on that s*** all the time. It may fatigue you more thats about it. But working on a harder floor at work would do the same thing. Honestly, if I was a baseball player there's not much appeal to come to Canada... unless you really don't like Americans...
SpinalBiffada Verified Member Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 The Jays front office is too busy smoking grass and singing Koombaya to really care.
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 someone send this to Rogers http://www.strathayr.com/turf-systems/removeable-natural-turf-system That seems like a perfect (or closest to) idea. I can hear the excuses of course but it shows it's possible to do. I'm sure they're aware of it but for some reason have passed on the idea. Don't do this but buy new turf every few years claiming the new turf is so much better and closer to grass than its predecessor.
