RIPEXPOS Verified Member Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 if say the Jays were to sneak into the playoffs and get a wildcard, only to then get blownout 8-0 in that wildcard game like Pittsburgh did, would you feel worse in that scenario than we as jays fans feel now?

Of course I'd rather get to the playoffs and be blown out. At least for two days prior I'd be in anticipation heaven
glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 Better to make it to one extra game than not, but yeah, if the Jays ever make the playoffs again, I hope they win the division.

Notice how you said if and not when There is a very real chance that the jays will never make the playoffs again
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 The Pittsburgh scenario...then AA and PB can claim self-vindication over the way they built this team and half this board will get a heart attack.
GNick49 Verified Member Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 Jays....as former Expos fan I can feel a little pain from '81. Rather lose in August than go in blowout
walkoff93 Verified Member Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 I would feel worse if we sold the farm for some rental players and then got blown out....cough...cough: Oakland.

They didn't sell the farm lol, they traded their best prospect along with another lower prospect to acquire two quality pitchers. They didn't even get blown out, wtf?

goeb Verified Member Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 Of course I'd rather qualify and get obliterated a la the Pirates than have a meaningless September. The run to the playoffs is analogous to the playoffs itself in a way. I am all for meaningful baseball in September, anything can happen in a one-game wild card playoff (hence why I am not much of a fan of that system).
GNick49 Verified Member Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 I would feel worse if we sold the farm for some rental players and then got blown out....cough...cough: Oakland. That's going to be bitter down the road. Plus traded their clean up hitter who is only 28..ouch

NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 It all depends on the win total for me. I wouldn't get too excited about the Jays making the postseason if they won less than 88 games.

It would feel bad. If we were healthy going in it would be worse, but overall,it would say that the FO did something right. It would also depend if the FO was going to try and improve things going forward.
F. Torres Verified Member Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 I'd feel much, much better with the season that the Pirates had. For starters, a "playoff" team (even if it loses in the WC game) looks a lot more attractive to most free agents than a .500 team. More importantly though, the Pirates got an extra game at home. Seeing a packed R.C. and how close the team is to really cashing in might get ownership to open up the purse strings a little more. And it'd definitely help attendance in 2015 knowing the team made the "playoffs." It'd be a gut punch, but the good definitely outweighs the bad imo.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 I rather the Jays not attempt the one and done route, but the perennial contender route. at least then even if they lose a single PS game in a blowout one year, at some point they will make it through. this was the beauty of the 1987 to 1993 period.... and why the jays were near the top in attendance

What if we would have given up Sanchez and Norris for Price then lost in the wild card game? Devastating.

You obviously weren't around in 92. Just in case you've somehow missed this. A's haven't won a World Series since 89. I'll take a couple world championships over a bunch of playoff flops all day. Not so sure about the A's future either. Billy Beane needs to work some magic to if they want to remain contenders in 2015.
