RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Did he sound like someone who will go after James Shields? Is James Shields a reliever? because from the sound of things, he blames it all on a lack of reliever and plans to spend heavily on relievers
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Yeah I really wanted that one too. I think they were in on him at the time but because they didn't want to be stuck with nothing went ahead with the Marlins deal and obviously in hindsight it looked awful. I think people underestimate the amount of luck in predicting performance. Theres been guys who I've been high on who for whatever reason s*** the bed the next season or don't live up to expectations. There's a huge amount of luck involved in any free agent signing. Absolutely. I'm sure glad we didn't sign Choo or Jimenez, even though I'll admit I wanted them last year. LOL
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Just reminded myself of Choo's contract and 2014 performance. Egads. He's likely to bounce back next year but still...
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2014 Author Posted September 29, 2014 Absolutely. I'm sure glad we didn't sign Choo or Jimenez, even though I'll admit I wanted them last year. LOL Exactly..I wanted Jiminez and McCann and they had pretty bad years and I'm glad we didn't sign them in hindsight. Also was excited about Izturis and I thought that was a steal for what he was going to produce and it turns out he has been a massive disaster so far. If you could always predict everyone performance there would be no enjoyment int actually watching teams play. Part of the fun of baseball is how unpredictable it is.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Cano was worth almost $30M last year according to Fangrgaphs and his 5 wins above replacement value of the likes of Goins/Kawasaki/Tolleson/ would have I think propelled this team to a wild card spot. AA wasted that money on Romero, Morrow, and a host of other non contributors

These stupid 8-10 year deals never work out.

I thought they were great contracts but unfortunately didn't work out. Sometimes risks work sometimes they don't but the reward would of been huge had they performed at their career expectations.
Governator Community Moderator Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Last fall AA said we need to upgrade second base & starting pitching. Almost had Santana & Kinsler (golf clap), instead we got Chris Getz, Steve Tolleson and Juan Francisco. Long term DL stints happened, weeks later we get Valencia & Reimold. No staff additions, no relief help, no second basemen. Blame lack of money, crap stadium, or AA... they are all interconnected imo. Turf needs to be addressed (I know it's coming), reserve funds need to be there, and AA has to grow a pair.

I thought the general manager of a baseball team was virtually paid on his ability to assess and predict future performance of players. Isn't that what the general manager does?
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Since I don't see it posted, here's the link. It's really long and rambling. http://pmd.fan590.com/audio_on_demand-3/Alex-Anthopoulos-with-Tim-Micallef-and-Sid-Seixeiro-ts-20140929-Interview.mp3

Isn't that what the general manager does? Yes and you have to look at all of the work he has done. Also you make it sound like its clear cut all the time. Like I said, all deals will have risk associated with it and even the best deals will not work out sometimes. Any GM won't be 100% making deals. I think if you look at the total value of the Bautista, EE, Morrow and Romero deals the Blue Jays still came out on top. You can't just cherry pick two deals that didn't work out and say he is doing a bad job when it comes to contracts.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Yes and you have to look at all of the work he has done. . I am and he is 396-414 in 5 years, never finishing above 3rd in his division. In fact, his best year was his first year when he inherited a team built by JPR. He also has the worst record in his division during that time span Is there any other metrics we should be using?
Home Run Trotting Verified Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Gibbons is also by far the worst at manager challenges (source: baseball reference). BY FAR. Gibbons is amateur hour. Always has been, always will be.

This isn't the value-accumulation olympics though, it's baseball, and AA's baseball teams have yet to be successful.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2014 Author Posted September 29, 2014 This isn't the value-accumulation olympics though, it's baseball, and AA's baseball teams have yet to be successful. I agree. I'm just saying people make him out to be much worse than he is. He has made some great trades and signed some great contracts, also has made some terrible ones. I think he values relievers too much and position players not enough. I think this offseason and next year is going to be really telling if he is a good GM or not and am excited to see what happens. IMO he deserves one more year to prove what he can do.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2014 Author Posted September 29, 2014 New poster. Is this board an exclusive club? Should I leave? With the 3 posts you have made so far, I am leaning to Yes.

Home Run Trotting Verified Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 What? Factually pointing out that john gibbons is the worst manager in the league at challenges and its not even close. That's wrong of me for pointing out? Edit: for burlington

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 The problem with this team is not the players, but coaching. A career record of 462-472 demonstrates that he isn't a good coach. There have numerous players that have stepped out of the lucker room to show the lack of respect towards him. The team was rolling early this season and fell apart under his control. Fire Gibbons and get a competent coach and you might actually make the playoffs next season. Youngtea: dipshit. Thanks for your contribution.

Isn't that what the general manager does? So your saying Terry Ryan should be fired for the Nolesco deal. Cashman would be long gone several times over. In fact i can point out bad deals by every GM in baseball with a little research. There are certainly better GM's than AA around but is the team better off with a new GM today or better to stick with AA another year. Most on this board would fire him now when all the talent he drafted is about to start playing in the Majors. Can he put together a roster that can play meaningful games in Sept? Remains to be seen but i wasted years calling for JP Retarded,s head because we had a bottom 5 farm system every year and AA fixed that in one draft. I still expect Beeston ,AA, and Gibbons gone but I'm not sure we will be better off.

If you watch the games you will know there are different circumstances regarding challenges and that the manager is not the one who is advocating challenging all the time.

I mean isn't it about wins at the end of the day, and being 14 games under .500 for 5 years, plus never finishing higher than 3rd, isn't that bad?? I am just trying to understand the logic. So I cant judge AA on past performance, and I cant judge him on future assessments. Just give me some Key Performance Indicators. Should I judge him on the number of late night Papa John's orders?

He put better teams on the field for less money. Bottom line.

E: that wasn't a response to your post, but to the notion that we should care about w/l in challenges. I can't think of a measuring stick I care less about.
