BTS Community Moderator Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 It wouldn't be surprising if this is his last start in a Toronto uniform, and if so, his tenure here was a pleasure. ~3.80 ERA through 65 starts and ~408 IP in his two years here. Exactly 6 fWAR for $29 million. The Marlins trade was awful, but Buehrle has been f***ing nails, and exceeded expectations. Guy is a machine. One of my favourite players to come through town since I started watching the team.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 Damnit BTS, I was just about to make a thread like this.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 He's pure class. I'm really hoping that we keep him and move Dickey this winter if we need to move a pitcher as it also means we can dump Thole.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 I didn't know it was possible to be impressed by someone performing exactly as expected, if not better, Mark Buehrle is just that good. Edit: game is over in less than 2 hours, I f***ing love this guy.

I just don't see the Jays trading him, even if it makes a certain amount of sense to do so given financial constraints. I agree though, it's fun to watch him when he gets locked in. I also think it's incredibly valuable having him around the young pitchers in terms of showing the importance of changing speeds, working fast, and hitting your spots.

Everyone was worried that he'd be a 4+ ERA guy with the move to the AL East, but he comes in, throws up a 3.8 mark over two years, and just doesn't miss a beat at all. I honestly can't remember the last time they added a veteran that worked out this well. Scott Rolen maybe? I really hope he doesn't leave. Hell, I hope he stays a few more years.
BlueJayWay Verified Member Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 I've become a real fan of Buerhle over the last couple seasons. Mostly for his no ******** attitude and M.O. Just get the ball, get the sign, throw it. No fuss, no muss.

It's hard to see a situation in which moving him makes sense unless they're bringing in a Martin or something. Still, I can see them cutting has salary and then spending the money a lot less efficiently.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 Good thread, he is a pleasure to watch. Congratulations to him.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 I had low expectations when we got him. I'm pleasantly surprised. I still hope we trade him though and re invest the 19$ million.
comeon sense Verified Member Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 I hope both him and Dickey stay. 200 plus innings each, and never missed a start, either of them. Great guys in the clubhouse, all the players love them etc..

Great guys in the clubhouse, all the players love them etc.. Dickey pitched (albeit poorly) through a sore neck last season. Morrow would have been on the DL. If they don't keep both they should really just clean house IMO.

Edit: game is over in less than 2 hours, I f***ing love this guy. He's been doing it since 2001, so this isn't a shocker. He's a great pitcher to have in a rotation since he's durable, is a lock for 200+ innings, and I love how he always works fast. It's a vintage Mark Buehrle season!
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 If Alex is still GM, then I can't see him trading anyone currently in the rotation. These are all of his guys and he traded a lot of prospect capital to get this rotation (well, 3/5 of it, anyway). Unless Rogers is dumping payroll, I don't see Buehrle going. Maybe mid-season 2015 if they fall out of it in July.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 Imagine Mark Buehrle and Halladay in the same rotation! I've always dreamt about it last decade!

Martin would be a great start. Maybe one of the Cubans would be a second. As long as they didn't invest it in the pen. You'd have to think the Dodgers could have interest in both Buehrle and Navarro. Not sure I'd want to eat the contracts of someone like Ethier though, which they'd probably insist on.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 Not even Navarro's horribleness can stop this guy.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 Imagine how good he'd be with a real catcher.
BTS Community Moderator Posted September 25, 2014 Author Posted September 25, 2014 Van Slyke please. We've been calling for a Van Slyke for years. He'd be perfect.
comeon sense Verified Member Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 Imagine how good he'd be with a real catcher. Buerhle says he has never shaken off any of his catchers.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 4 yrs ago on the old board I compared MB favourably to Greinke and got heavily slammed for it by the 'elite' on here Vindication
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 Van Slyke please. Yeah, Van Slyke along with Guerrero would be ideal for Buehrle and Navarro. I just don't think the dodgers would eat that much additional money.

Beckett, Hanley, and Billingsley are of the books, and I can see them targeting Martin, especially if Hanley walks.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 Greinke averaging 4.1 WAR over 10 yrs with a 9.1 WAR outlier MB averaging 3.7 WAR over 14 years as a durable innings eater
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 Van Slyke please. What would you give up though? LA is likely looking for a name, or overpay by sending a prospect that makes Colletti take notice.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 So one more year? I expect both him and Dickey back to be honest. It will be Sanchez and Norris fighting for #5 other goes to Triple-A possibly pen. Happ is the odd man out. They have to pick up Happ's option.... crazy not to
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 Navarro for Guerrero would be great (move Guerrero to LF since his infield defense is questionable). The Jays won't be able to replace Buehrle adequately. I'd feel more comfortable holding on to him if they plan on competing.
