Kawasaki - 77 G, 257 PA, 0.4 WAR

Tolleson - 105 G, 184 PA, 0.8 WAR

Goins - 61 G, 175 PA, 0.2 WAR

Diaz - 23 G, 45 PA, -0.2 WAR

Izturis - 11 G, 38 PA, 0.2 WAR

Combined total: 381G, 1018 PA, 2 WAR

 

So nearly two full infield positions were given to a bunch of also-rans that combined for 2 WAR. Nearly half of that was from the effective use of Tolleson as a defensive replacement. Two guys traded during the year, Headley and Prado have 3+ WAR each. To be fair, two guys available through FA Drew and Infante wouldn't have been much better than the guys above. But if AA had just taken more care in shoring up the thin and injury-prone infield and not get complacent and cocky when the patchwork of Francisco and Tolleson worked in May there's a good chance the Jays are tied for that WC right now. Sad.

Much thanks to Colby's steller season we're 2nd to last in CF WAR in the AL. 2B and relief pitching is pretty rough, 3B isn't as bad as you're putting it according to this.

Goins has been worth -0.6 WAR actually. And to think he could magically put up 3 WAR as one poster believes..

It will be interesting to see if they do anything this offseason. They should go hard after Scherzer or Lester and try to get someone (I originally thought Ramirez was a FA) on a short term deal, assuming Lawrie can play some 2nd before he gets hurt. Add something to the bullpen and then maybe they can contend.

headley and prado have not earning their 6 WAR since the trade deadline.. That is over the course of the season. I don't think they were available in April. Also, the increase is WAR is only 4, not the six the Jays are behind in the WC right now. YOu have also excluded Lawrie's numbers.

 

I get the point of your post but obviously its over simplistic to think adding Prado and Headley would improve the Jays record to date by 6 wins

Ideally yes, it would have been nice to get an Ervin Santana type, but in the end that wouldn't have made a huge difference. The infield is where the top focus needs to be, along with resigning Melky or acquiring an equivalent. I look forward to the front office bumbling this again as it puts a World Series contender together with the first half of the roster and a pile of s*** the rest of the way.

Fun fact: Zack Greinke is a better true talent hitter than Ryan Goins.

 

I'd assume Bumgarner and Wood as well. Although I don't think Bumgarner showed it in the past. I've always considered Wood to be the best hitting pitcher.
