AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 (edited) The following Blue Jays have options for the Blue Jays to consider in the off-season. (Let me know if I missed anything). Adam Lind: $7.5 million/$1 million buyout. JA Happ: $6.7 million/200k buyout. Dustin Mcgowan: $4 million/500k buyout Josh Thole: $1.75 million Sergio Santos: $6 million/$750k buyout Brandon Morrow: $10 million/$1 million buyout I think that's it. Cott's isn't as reliable as it once was. Edited September 20, 2014 by AdamGreenwood

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 Id pick up Happ and Lind. Deal Happ if you bring back Buehrle
Vincent Verified Member Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 I'd scrap Thole but we don't really have much of a choice Happ depends what AA does in the off season What is "Cott's"?

Or you could say he doesn't have much of a choice either (Thole). Does he get a MLB job if we decline his option? By declining the option we can force him to come back on a much cheaper contract.

jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 Pick up Linds and Happs. Try and bring back Morrow and Santos on reduced deals. Tell Thole he can catch Dickey for league min or he can go f*** himself and we'll go with George.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 Just cut ties with Happ For what pitchers are going for it would be a shame if AA can't pick up the option and deal him for a decent asset

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 Wonder if Morrow is willing to sign at Happ's current option as a starter, although I still don't see the 10MM option as the end of the world if we accept it. High risk/reward.

High risk/reward. Morrow is a diabetic If he gets so much as cold, he will be out for a month. That is why the guy gets so many freak injuries. Its not that they are freaky, its just that his immune system and recovery is weak. Waste of any money.
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 I don't see Morrow or McGowan being picked up but I could be wrong. I have the feeling they'll give McGowan another chance, telling him to prepare as a starter again in the off season and he'll be back in the pen and they'll cite CJ being a FA and our pen costing us games in April to keep him around. Morrow I could see them bringing him back at a lower amount but he seems to be bent on finding a starting role somewhere. I think they'll decline his option, offer him a lower deal, and see what happens. I doubt he finds a deal for too much to start when he couldn't make more than a handful of OK starts the past few years and the injury risk. I'd like to see him back, maybe at McGowan's $4M to see if he could be a set up man or potential closer (if no one else is brought in) just to see if he can hold up and be useful in a relief role. Maybe give him a year with an option and see. I think Lind and Thole are guarantees since Thole is RAD bff and Lind might have had his power zapped but he hits righties well, solves a DH/1B role and isn't that expensive compared to what other guys might cost unless they think Johnson or Francisco can do the same job at cheaper. I could see Lind and JA Happ being picked up and potentially traded if the right deal comes along. I think Happ more than anyone could be picked up and traded since we have the young arms, he's done a fairly OK job lately in the rotation and some team might need to fill out their rotation at cheap (maybe the Jays eat a little money to make him a bit more interesting especially if a desperate team offers a prospect or maybe a bad deal for bad deal that nets the Jays a 2B/3B) which would open a spot for Sanchez or Norris/Nolin. The sad thing is I can see all of them being picked up (exception being Morrow) because that's how AA operates. AA likes his "assets" and doesn't like to give anyone a walking card. I'd actually like to have Happ back because it seems every year something goes wrong with the rotation (injury, someone sucks out loud) but since Morrow will likely be gone or in the pen if he's back that might be one less problem to worry about although weird s*** happens. Who knows if next year MB finally hits the DL or RA Dickey pulls a groin again but needs a break? Either way AA has his work cut out for him if he wants to try and seem like he's building a competing team again.
Inklink Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 Happ is the only one that should be picked up, IMO. Thole if Dickey is back. Lind .. time to move on. McGowan: I'll drive him to the border. Santos: don't pick up the option. Morrow: don't pick up the option but wouldn't mind him back for cheaper.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 (edited) Happ, Thole and Lind pick up options and keep though I'd trade Happ in a package if a deal was available McGowan, Santos gone Morrow buy out, but try to re sign at half price Edited September 19, 2014 by G-Snarls
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 Hopefully Morrow feels like he owes the Jays a heavily discounted season but we'll see...

Chappy Community Moderator Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 Happ, Lind, and Thole will all get picked up. The rest will be declined, but that doesn't mean they won't be back on lesser deals.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 The Jays could get cheap with Thole. Turn down the 1.25M option and have him go to arbitration. Save that potential $200K.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 How long do teams have to exercise options after the season ends? 5 days after the World Series ends. Same with qualifying offers...which they have 7 days to accept or reject.

The Org. would just look greasy Sure, but save $200K here, maybe a bit somewhere else and all of a sudden AA may have some money for a RP or bench bat or whatever. I doubt pissing of Thole would have any real consequences for the team. He is about as insignificant a player as it gets.

He is not insignificant when he is a black hole in the 8 spot in front of Gose I'd REALLY like to have a good defensive catcher as our complement to Navarro, or jettison Navarro for a more well rounded (no pun intended) primary catcher. Navarro is a good hitter and probably calls a good game, but he has too many deficiencies to start 130 games behind the plate.

As much as we would all like to upgrade at catcher, I just don't see it happening. I'm willing to bet AA is content with Navarro after how bad JPA was, and let's face it AA doesn't seem to place to much emphasis on D anyways.
BlueJaysGirl Verified Member Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 Everyone gets picked up but McGowan. Yeah, I agree, but I wouldn't be surprised if he's brought back on a 2-3 year deal AAV $2.5M.
