Sorrow Verified Member Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 I really wonder how much Beeston and Rogers dictate what AA can actually do. It will be interesting to see what occurs with Beeston gone. If it's more of the same it's time to cut your ties and see if you can't poach the assistant GM in Oakland. From what I've read he seems to be a guy who will be a GM sooner rather than later.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 What do you guys think of moving Buehrle and Navarro to Texas? Obviously would free up tons of cash to go after Russell Martin. They would probably want us to take on a contract and i could see Elvis Andrus as a nice fit (they have Odor and Profar). He's having a down year but we could slide Reyes at 2nd which would be a massive upgrade and Martin would be a massive upgrade. The $ would make sense too. An IF of Lawrie, Andrus, Reyes, Edwin and Martin would be pretty legit if we're not going the rebuild route.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 I think Jon Daniels hangs up, honestly. Maybe your right. Buehrle is going to put up around 3.5ish fWAR and Navarro 2.5ish fWAR (not including framing). Neither are locked up long term and the Rangers desperately need an innings eater and a catcher and frankly have a cheap replacement in Profar they can plug in and can rid themselves of a long term deal to player who just hit 78 wRC+ and will probably be worth 1.5 fWAR. Not really giving up much to get 2 useful pieces.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 I think if a GM ever spit out projected win value he should be immediately, and forcibly, retired from baseball. Potentially, retired from life, as well. Lol strong
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Does Soto's contract end this year? Also 24 million to the Rangers for a year, and we get Andrus back and his contract, I don't see them doing it. They have Holland back now, and Perez in May, meh, just don't see it, I'd love it if we were able to land Martin. That would be a massive upgrade. Soto plays for the Oakland Athletics my friend. They need a catcher. They also need an innings eater, their rotation was destroyed by injuries and we all know Buehrle is kinda good at staying healthy.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 WTF? Why would Oakland get another catcher, they had 3 on the roster as it was? I see your point, and would like that to come to fruition, but... http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-baseball/24678011/rangers-trade-geovany-soto-to-as-for-cash It obviously won't come to fruition unless I'm secretly AA. (I'm not mods, don't ban me). I think it would be a good trade though for both teams.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Yeah, just read it, 4 catchers, overkill!? #Flexibility lol

abola2121 Verified Member Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Are Shelby Miller and Trevor Bauer realistic comparisons for each other? As far as young power arms with perceived control issues go, yes.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Are Shelby Miller and Trevor Bauer realistic comparisons for each other? Shelby miller is just so meh, one of the most overrated draft arm in baseball history. Highly touted and looks like Ubaldo after he lost his velocity

JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 #Flexibility lol I guess it's the polar opposite of trade every catcher not named JPA away in the offseason form not too long ago.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 (edited) I think Jon Daniels hangs up, honestly. Andrus has an incredibly player-friendly contract. Like, really friendly. It's so friendly it probably had sex with him after it was signed. Eight more guaranteed years ($15M per from 2015-2020 and $14M per from 2021-2022 with a team option for $15M in 2023). He has TWO player options, one after 2018 and another after 2019. If he is traded, then that team option in 2023 automatically becomes a player option and a trade would give him a complete NTC. If the Jays are really that hard up to get Andrus, then I'd offer Romero, Izturis, and Navarro, and that's probably doing the Rangers a favor. If the Rangers think they'll get any sort of value for a player that will effectively have a NINE YEAR DEAL with three opt-outs and a NTC in it when traded, then they are insane. He isn't that good. Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Another potentially useful backup catcher who won't get a lick of playing time.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Kottaras can hit but not much of a defender. I'd rather have defense at catcher than marginal offense. Does Lind for Martin Maldonado make sense for both teams? I think a good defensive catcher would make a huge difference for this team.

League min or close and they have nothing close in the system . Coulter is in A ball. Robinson Diaz is probably their injury backup so they would just have to replace him with more expensive and not as good. Having him allows them to play Lecroy at 1st.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Much as I have bitched about Navarro all year it is a moot point . Jays love the bat and I'm not convinced they care about his defense or think it is as bad as it really is. Even scarier is the thought of having Pillar Gose and Goins at the bottom of the lineup on a daily basis and Sanchez in the Bull Pen because Rogers is focused only on Hockey. I'm always the negative guy when it comes to budgets but it was even worse than I predicted last year and I think it is going down to 120 ish. That is why the kids and Valencia are playing every day now even thou we still have a 1 % shot .

If the Jays brought it down to 120 AND squirreled away some money for the deadline, it would be prefferable to the current situation. If you plan out the roster well, you can build a solid team around this core for less than you're paying for it now and having a bit of a cash to deal with whatever needs emerge is better than the current "blow everything in one off season and have zero contingencies in place" approach.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 The only way they could safely get to 120M would be by trading Reyes for very little, using Goins at short, and making up for the offensive shortfall there by upgrading at another position. Not for the faint of heart. Why 120M?
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 I can't see Rogers being so stupid to lower payroll..Even if the Blue Jays up payroll by 10-15 million and sign a Free agent people will buy tickets again and there will be "hype". Selling tickets is all about what you do in the offseason and the last 2 offseasons have shown that. And for all this "hockey" resulted in the Jays payroll being lower. The Blue Jays brand is a separate entity than the Hockey rights.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Trade (preferable) or don't pick up options on Lind, Happ, Morrow, Santos, McGowan, and Thole. Happ can be replaced internally (Sanchez/Nolin/Norris). McGowan can be replaced by some Jason Frasor type, or maybe bring McGowan back at a reduced price. Thole only has a career because of Dickey so I'm guessing that his option can be declined and he can be brought back for less. That leaves Lind as the main guy to replace. Yeah, I don't think this team is much worse with a reduced payroll, but that says more about how poorly the funds were allocated before.

The others I can see, although if you're keeping dickey Thole and him are pretty much conjoined twins.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 letting lind walk for 6.5 mil would be stupid. Agreed. You can't just let him walk for nothing. At worst you trade him and even then only if the return is good. Being "forced" to keep him is not a negative scenario.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 So if we don't pick up Thole does he even get a job anywhere else? I'm in favour of not picking up the option and then resigning him for half the amount if we are keeping Dickey. This type of thing maybe isn't the person friendly thing to do but we have given Thole a MLB salary so he should be thankful we even have him on the roster.
