burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 So Buehrle now has put up 3 WAR and is 34th among SP with at least 140 IP in ERA in the MLB. If they want to unload that contract I don't think you really have eat any money. There should be a team that will take an almost guaranteed 2.5-3 RAR WAR for 19 million.

I think you mean RA9WAR haha in which case he's only at 2.9
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 I'm in favor of letting Happ go and keeping Buehrle. The difference in innings is huge and Happ is about two wins worse overall. Opens up a spot for Sanchez as well if that's the direction they want to go.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Because I can't help but check every once in a while... JP Arencibia has played in 55 games this year and is hitting .168/.226/.341, with a wRC+ of 58. He has negative offensive AND defensive value adding up to a hefty -1.5 WAR Meanwhile Navarro has been worth 1.9 WAR I know we all wanted Ruiz or similar but that's a pretty fantastic upgrade/win differential for reasonable $. (Navarro only made 3M this season, but gets 5M next year) Ruiz has produced 1 more WAR than Navarro but cost the Phillies 8.5M, and is owed 8.5M again in each of his age 36 and 37 seasons. Not bad Anthopoulos, not bad

You're probably right I like Navarro's game calling but the framing is suspect. The bat is very good. Regardless, paying an aging Ruiz 8.5M for two more years is not appealing. And it's so nice not watching JP every day.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 http://www.baseballprospectus.com/sortable/index.php?cid=1667336 Navarro worth anywhere from -13 to -15 runs with framing. Or -1.5 Wins for a total of 0.4 WAR. Free agent Russell Martin has been worth 6.8 WAR. IN 93 GAMES. Stabilizes in under 10 games caught. Actually around 6. I have tested and can confirm as well. As bad as Navarro is at pitch framing I can't see the Blue Jays getting rid of Navarro.

Chappy Community Moderator Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Were not getting Martin, zero chance.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Any chance the Padres trade Rene Rivera? Looks like he is an elite pitch framer and has learned how to hit a bit.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Yeah, he'll be looking for 18 AAV, no doubt. What did he sign for last time though? Answer: a whole hell of a lot less than I thought he would.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Were not getting Martin, zero chance. It sucks. We ALL wanted him before the Pirates got him.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 What did he sign for last time though? Answer: a whole hell of a lot less than I thought he would. Yep. And the Yankees were idiots for not retaining him. He and his agent now know how much he's worth and he's gonna get paid accordingly.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 That Navy is below replacement level because of his defense is not anything to be surprised over. His defensive woes and unwillingness to get in shape have been talked about since his days in Tampa. That said his bat is has been a breath of fresh air over JPA,s woes. The Jays had coach work with JPA to fix his defense and it worked . He became a decent enough defender and above average framer. We aren't getting away from Navarro and Martin will get paid way more than AA is willing or able to pay. So unless we want to be terrible again next year I suggest they lay down the law about coming to camp in shape and get him a coach to work on his defense. It is not like the guy doesn't have talent which is why i hate his defense so much.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 As bad as Navarro is at pitch framing I can't see the Blue Jays getting rid of Navarro. Bandit do you have the link to where it shows the jays are -94 runs so far this year do to pitch framing. Extra strikes called against us VS the sties we don't get due to Navarro,s framing . Now that is a real Eye opening read.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Every jays fan hated it when we had Jose Molina and it was jpa this and jpa that
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Ken he's always been out of shape, if the Birds could move Navvy and pick up a guy like Martin Maldonado, I'd be ecstatic. JPA's defense was just as bad or worse, apparently he's improved his framing, but even than it was just average. Or they could just man up a pay a difference maker. I suspect Pitt will QO Russel though which we all know AA will never give up his 1st rounder...

Jay, much as I would love to out of that 5 mil deal I don't see the Jays getting away from Navy. The hope I have is he is in a contract year and theyt could dangle a carrot saying they would like to extend him but he would have to get in shape and improve his defense. that is how i would approach it and have him get a PT.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 I hear you, they have Sal Fasano for a reason, use the man. It helped JPA a bit. There was an article saying he was working with him but you can't always make a bad defensive catcher into an average one...
Chappy Community Moderator Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Navarro is the least of our worries. Get a legitimate 2B and this team takes a big step forward.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Navarro is the least of our worries. Get a legitimate 2B and this team takes a big step forward. I disagree completely. His defense sucks and I think there has been enough data out there to show that he's a terrible pitch framer. We need to upgrade behind the plate. It's the most important position in the game.

You need to upgrade the team as best as possible the cheapest way possible. If that happens at catcher, you do it. If its at 2nd base, you do it.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Did you read that AA Manifesto? Apparently, OF is #1? and bullpen of course
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 W ith Dickey Thole will be a catcher leaving only one spot for Navarro who is under contract Safe to say catching will stay put as is. Maybe get Kratz back if released from KC
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Navarro is the least of our worries. Get a legitimate 2B and this team takes a big step forward. Agreed. And I don't really want the starters to have to change who they're throwing to every single year.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 If AA can send Dickey and Thole back to NL along with Burly and free up 30 mil now we are talking Take that 30 mil sign Lester and have a rotation if Lester-Stroman-Sanchez-Happ-Hutch

Chappy Community Moderator Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Agreed. And I don't really want the starters to have to change who they're throwing to every single year. There are obvious holes and catching is NOT the top priority.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 anyone else notice d'Arnaud's recent improvement..... now at 1.2 WAR in 94 games and showing some power - 12 HR for $0.5M
