This thread was fun last year, so let’s do it again. I tried to keep the projected roster at guys who earned a place this year and are likely to make next year’s team. IMO the only virtual locks to not be non-tendered are Lawrie, Francisco, and Hutchison.

C – Martin (7)

1B – Encarnacion (10)

2B – Travis (nm)

3B – Donaldson (arb1 proj. 4.5)

SS – Reyes (22)

RF – Bautista (14)

CF – Pompey (nm)

LF – Pillar (nm)

DH – Navarro (5)

2B/3B – Maicer Izturis (3)

3B - Valencia (arb1 proj. 1.7)

C - Thole (1.75)

SP – Dickey (12)

SP – Buehrle (19)

SP – Romero (7.5)

SP - Happ (6.7)

SP – Hutchison (nm)

SP – Stroman (nm)

RP - Estrada (arb3 proj. 4.7)

RP – Brett Cecil (arb2 proj. 2.6)

RP – Aaron Loup (nm)

RP – Todd Redmond (nm)

RP - Liam Hendriks (nm)

$122.95

Yeah. Lots of really decent relievers out there this year too that likely wouldn't be prohibitively expensive too.

I think the decision on Morrow will set the tone for the offseason. Just based on history of how AA handles things, you can probably bet Morrow is coming back.

I would not retain McGowan at 4 million with the plethora of arms out there that don't suck. I'd like to think AA would let Santos go at his price tag and volatility but who the hell knows. And if morrow comes back, where's the room for Happ? Want a 6.7 million dollar long reliever but keep him and have him step in when/if Morrow gets hurt?

Kawasaki is probably back, and will be cheap. should be out of options now and if he's the 2b to start the season and batting 8th or 9th... Not the worst scenario in the world, but far from ideal.

Mastro can be non tendered and nobody should lose any sleep. I wish Thole could be also ... That whole situation just plain sucks.

Let Rasmus/McGowan walk

Decline options on Morrow/Santos/McGowan/Happ

Give Melky the four year deal he wants

Also, not sure why Francisco is a lock to stay. He has clearly been exposed.

Johnson was let loose. That QO wasn't that much more (4M) than what Morrow will be getting.

Too risky. I'd put a lot of money on Morrow being declined.

Try to trade Navarro.

Rasmus- gone

Morrow- renegotiate or let him walk

Mcgowan- gone

Janssen- gone

Melky- reasonable 3-4 year contract resign or let him walk

Happ- pick up option

Santos- gone

Lind- pick up option

Izturis- buy him out

Valencia- gone

Kawasak- if he'll sign the same contract bring him back

Francisco- IDK

Thole- IDK

Buehrle- try to trade

Reyes- try to trade

The only option I'd pick up is Lind.

As for the arb guys, I could see Reimold, Valencia, and Kawasaki potentially tendered depending on how things go. Anyone know the option situation on the three?

Francisco is a nice fit for the roster as currently constructed IMO. If his arb salary is ~$3 million, that's decent value. He's a very good bench bat, can play first and isn't terrible at third. Insurance at DH for when Lind goes down etc... I think there will probably be a place for him.

Really not keen on paying market value for Melky. I'd rather target a LF with a more under-valued skill set (defense). Melky is a complete butcher.

I wish there was an easy resource that you could just type in a player name, find out the exact date he was added to the 40 man roster and any assignments since.

I'm sure Reimold is out, he's been on the 40 man since 2009. Ditto Valencia. Kawasaki might have 1 left. He never spent any time in the minors in 2012 when he was first in the bigs.

**edit** Confirmed Valencia and Reimold are out of options. Mlbtraderumors had an article at the start of the year.

Valencia will surely be tendered.

Put Lawrie at 2 and Francisco/Valencia at 3B

I wonder how good a defender Lawrie is a 2B. Valencia/Francisco at 3B, Reyes at SS, Lind/Edwin at 1B, and Navarro at C is abysmal.

And in that scenario they're 1 inevitable Lawrie injury away from being even more f'd.

I really doubt Francisco comes back. I doubt the org would go into next year without a 2nd/3rd baseman again after the catastrophe this season.

I wonder if the idea of retaining Rasmus at lower than market value has occurred to anyone within the org. Ideally Gose is the everyday CF (unless we acquire someone better via trade) and he gets a right handed platoon that plays good defense.

Oh yeah? How much are you willing to bet....with someone else of course since I'm not the betting type.

Rasmus at like $5-6 million would be amazing. You could use him in LF, in a platoon, or as a 4th OF. He has a useful MLB skillset, and somebody is going to extract value from it.

Sure at that price Rasmus would be an amazing asset. But what are the chances he signs for that amount anywhere let alone in Toronto?

He is the exact kind of guy that should take a 1 year deal and try to build his value, but someone will offer a multi-year deal. Nothing high enough to that he would decline a QO, but somebody will.

I wouldn't be totally surprised.

I think he'd but up some gaudy defensive numbers in LF. Plus plus defense + average bat = pretty good player.

I think I'm in the minority in that I really don't want Reimold back. League-average-ish bat with no evidence of platoon split, only plays LF, doesn't play it well, no baserunning value. Meh. The OF could really use another capable CF defender, preferably one that hits from the right side and can do it reasonably well.

Totally dependent on the budget. What do posters think the budget will be in 2015

I suspect it goes down to Aprox 120 mil.

That means Rasmus, Melky, Morrow, Santos, and Mcgowan are gone.

No room for Both Lind and Fransico on this team so while I exercise Lind,s option I deal him and Platoon Reimold and Fransisco at DH.

I really try to trade Buehrle even if I eat 6 mil. Happ believe it or not I keep. The new 94 mph fastball Happ is tradeable at 6.7 and i will trade him when I blow this team up at the deadline So

1st- Encarnacion

2nd- Kawasaki

SS- Reyes

3rd- Lawrie

LF - FA

CF- Gose/ Pillar platoon

RF- Bautista

DH- Francisco/ Reimold

Dickey

Stroman

Hutch

Happ

??????

As for the BP

Cecil

Loup

Redmond

Jenkins

Drabek

FA

FA

Did not do the #,s but there should be some money for FA signings .

Then blow it up at the deadline . Eat money and deal Reyes, trade Bautista,Dickey and Happ plus Cecil and any one you can get good value for

Yeah, but no one is out there lol. The OF market is so bad.

$120 M would be an absolute death sentence. I'm expecting something in the $135-145 M range. Which probably still isn't enough for this group. Either way, I'm expecting $10-12 million to be spent on two free agent relievers.

That would be amazing. People really underrate his abilities at times, even at a QO it wouldn't be the end of the world, as he easily has the skills to be worth it, though I think with a season like this one and the fact that he really seems to like it here (as opposed to his Cardinals days) makes me think we can resign him at a good value for us.
