ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2014 Posted August 10, 2014 I agree the fans were getting excited and wanted the team to improve but if the Marlins and Dickey trades don't happen the fan base is still excited about what is to come from all the talent AA acquired so quickly and allows him to continue he with his rebuild. That would've been fine by you and me and several others, but those who run the franchise decided they'd rather use some of those prospects to improve the team for 2013 instead of fielding a possible 95-loss team. It is what it is.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2014 Posted August 10, 2014 The whole thing is just so ridiculous. There is no payroll space. That much is obvious given that they haven't added a player with a salary exceeding $3 million since the end of last season. There isn't a problem with that - a $135 million payroll commitment from Rogers is more than enough to win if you have a decent FO. They just sound incredibly stupid spouting off about how "the flexibility is there". If the flexibility is there, f***ing use it to improve the team that's tied for a wild card spot. Either the FO is lying about payroll flexibility, or they've been trying fruitlessly to spend some cash for the last 10 months and are just ineffective beyond all understanding. Either way, Beeston and AA are embarrassing themselves. What he said. After this past off season passing the hat and this trade deadline in the best chance year we would/will have in some time imo they were a joke. No cred. Piss poor talent evaluation and player development. Our total payroll amount isn't the issue.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2014 Posted August 10, 2014 The only people excited about the Jays before the 2012 season, were the players, excited to cash their big league checks. They had won 85 games 2 years prior, and 81 in the previous year ... and were predicted for a similar mediocre finish. And then they proceeded to legitimize expectations by playing like a mediocre team ... until they just went down the pooper entirely. There was somewhat of a buzz in smaller circles about being happy with the general state/direction of the franchise (vis a vis the recent past), but that was those people being silly, with "ninja" buzz surrounding overrated and generally meaningless pieces such as Lawrie and Rasmus. But the actual on-the-field product was still predicted to be woefully mediocre. And the faith placed in the degenerate youth misguided. My recollection is different than yours. I remember many people talking about being happy with the direction of the franchise, especially with a farm system that was considered to be among the top 5 in the game, including several posters that now hate the current FO. Not saying the team was expected to contend, but despite a suspect pitching staff, among other weaknesses, it was still hovering around .500 in July. The wheels did fall off, but you cannot just gloss over the injuries they had. Again, not saying they were a legit contender, but that season had some major setbacks like RR's implosion and TJS for Hutchison, among others. Anyway, it's not big deal, but I'll trust my memory over someone who forgot he said Marcus Stroman's struggles in ST were a sign he'd get lit up in MLB and repeated such garbage when he struggled out of the Blue Jays BP in less than 9IP...thank you.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Probably the worst GM I have seen with this org. Couldn't really do anything right. John Olerud and cash for Robert Person. Letting Roberto Alomar go for nothing. Trading David Cone and Roger Clemens to the Yankees to help their dynasty. Nevermind Blue Jays history, I'd like anyone to name five GM's in the last 20 years for anyone team who was worse than him.
