Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2014 Posted August 8, 2014 Lol! AYFKM?! Hahahaha how anyone can take this f***ing clown act seriously, I will never know. Beeston even looks like one of those creepy ass clowns you hire for some kid's birthday.
Vincent Verified Member Posted August 8, 2014 Posted August 8, 2014 2015 feels like our last chance for a while anyway (depending how our young starters develop).
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 8, 2014 Posted August 8, 2014 Couldn't add salary at the deadline, but the payroll space is there if they ask. The loathsome collection of clowns running this team are impossible to cheer for.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2014 Posted August 8, 2014 I swear, people who blame Rogers are the worst. We have a top 10 payroll and f***ing morons like this who want to build a track team are f***ing that up.
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 8, 2014 Posted August 8, 2014 I swear, people who blame Rogers are the worst. We have a top 10 payroll and f***ing morons like this who want to build a track team are f***ing that up. The whole thing is just so ridiculous. There is no payroll space. That much is obvious given that they haven't added a player with a salary exceeding $3 million since the end of last season. There isn't a problem with that - a $135 million payroll commitment from Rogers is more than enough to win if you have a decent FO. They just sound incredibly stupid spouting off about how "the flexibility is there". If the flexibility is there, f***ing use it to improve the team that's tied for a wild card spot. Either the FO is lying about payroll flexibility, or they've been trying fruitlessly to spend some cash for the last 10 months and are just ineffective beyond all understanding. Either way, Beeston and AA are embarrassing themselves.
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 8, 2014 Posted August 8, 2014 “When I hear last week that we didn’t make decisions because we didn’t have the money or there was a hockey contract, it’s just flat out wrong,” he explained. “It’s patently false. We’ve got what we need to do. If there wasn’t a trade that was made, it was because Alex (Anthopoulos) and the baseball people didn’t think they wanted to part with the players for what they’d get back.” Does he have any idea who Brandon McCarthy is? Chase Headley? Martin Prado?
Chappy Community Moderator Posted August 8, 2014 Posted August 8, 2014 Does he have any idea who Brandon McCarthy is? Chase Headley? Martin Prado? I doubt he could list our entire 25 man roster.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted August 8, 2014 Posted August 8, 2014 (edited) BTS did a great job of this for 2014, I'm sure we'll get one for 2015 committed payroll right now (including buyouts) $96.2M (Reyes, Buehrle, Bautista, Dickey, EE, Izturis, Navarro) with options on (Morrow,, Lind McGowan, Happ, Thole and Santos) So assuming Thole, Lind and Happ are picked up. that's 14.75M more. Now approximate $111M Arbitration cases Francisco, Cecil, Reimold, Johnson, Valencia, Lawrie, Delabar, Hutch (if he hits Super 2 which is expected), Muni, and Mastro. Only Lawrie, Cecil and Hutch stand to make much there and chances are most of those others sign near league min if they are signed at all. Of the 10 of them I'll say 7 sign for a total of $10M (very rough estimate) Now $121 M Which means $121M for 20 of your 40 players with glaring holes in the Pen and OF. Really it's likely that Beest isn't lying they need to increase payroll just to remain the just above .500 club they are. Edited August 8, 2014 by TheHurl

Really it's likely that Beest isn't lying they need to increase payroll just to remain the just above .500 club they are. They could go to $145 million and it would still be very difficult to field a team as good as the one on pace to win 85 games this year.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2014 Posted August 8, 2014 Cliffs on Gord Ash? I was too young to pay attention. “When I look back at the unwinding of my tenure (as Jays’ GM from ‘95 to ‘01), we had no plan.” -Ash said this in a 2012 interview about his tenure as Jays GM. http://www.thestar.com/sports/baseball/2012/06/21/griffin_brewers_agm_gord_ash_has_one_regret_in_time_as_blue_jays_gm.html
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2014 Posted August 8, 2014 Dan Johnson, Steve Delabar and Mastro are non-tender candidates. Morrow won't be back. Santos is likely gone, as will likely McGowan.

I wonder how many GMs feel the same way reflecting back on a tenure after being canned? It's easy to see how things can spiral quickly out of control once a few things go wrong, and you would feel like you're reacting to things as they happen instead of setting pieces in place for a long-term plan.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted August 8, 2014 Posted August 8, 2014 I doubt Happ is back. They may pickup the option but then I would expect him to be traded before the season starts. I think they go with Sanchez in the rotation to start the season.

He had big shoes to fill after Gillick and the two WS wins. The team was aging and they were losing players to FA. Was the perfect opportunity for a rebuild.

A lot of that was ownership's fault too. Ash made some solid draft picks (Halladay being one of them), as well as some good (and some bad) FA signings, but his trades were god awful. David Wells for Mike Sirotka, Michael Young for Esteban Loiaza, Shawn Green for Raul Mondesi, the Clemens trade was pretty bad, trading Olerud, etc. And it was like they were perpetually buyers only to switch to sellers (as Ash himself stated above) although that probably had something to do with ownership at the time.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2014 Posted August 8, 2014 They could go to $145 million and it would still be very difficult to field a team as good as the one on pace to win 85 games this year. Still better than the zero flexibility the Yankees will have on payroll (without paying luxury tax), and facing having to resign their closer, find a SS, several SP, a 2B, and arb raises. They're already at $168.768M for 10 players. Considering the Yanks cut payroll to $209M (including taxes), they don't have a lot of room, especially with teams like the Red Sox, Cubs, Dodgers, etc. expected to be agressive in FA.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted August 8, 2014 Posted August 8, 2014 Dan Johnson, Steve Delabar and Mastro are non-tender candidates. Morrow won't be back. Santos is likely gone, as will likely McGowan. which is exactly what I had them at. Morrow and Santo's buyouts (as well as McGowan's which I'm not sure of). Sorry I forgot Lind. He's an increase of $7M if his option is picked up...no buyout cost. I'll add him.

Ash did draft a few key players, but really over the course of his tenure it wasn't good enough IMO. I agree his trades were dreadful.

I think they go with Sanchez in the rotation to start the season. The team options are all kinda interesting: Morrow 10 M option and 1M buyout Lind 7.5 M option and 1 M buyout Happ 6.7 M option 0.2 M buyout McGowan 4 M option 0.5 buyout Thole (I don't even know the terms) Lind will be back. Morrow probably won't. I could see the team going either way on the other three. Personally, the only one I'd pick up is Lind assuming a 135-140 payroll.

I agree his trades were dreadful. Ownership was a mess back then (frigging Interbrew!). Those who complain about Rogers don't realize how close this franchise came to moving to the US back in the late 90s/early 2000s. Not to mention the stadium issues back then as well (the stadium's owners went into bankruptcy)
