OFFICIAL BASEBALL RULE 7.13

Collisions at home plate

A runner attempting to score may not deviate from his direct pathway to the plate in order to initiate contact with the catcher (or other player covering home plate). If, in the judgment of the umpire, a runner attempting to score initiates contact with the catcher (or other player covering home plate) in such a manner, the umpire shall declare the runner out (even if the player covering home plate loses possession of the ball). In such circumstances, the umpire shall call the ball dead, and all other baserunners shall return to the last base touched at the time of the collision.

Rule 7.13 comment: The failure by the runner to make an effort to touch the plate, the runner's lowering of the shoulder, or the runner's pushing through with his hands, elbows or arms, would support a determination that the runner deviated from the pathway in order to initiate contact with the catcher in violation of Rule 7.13. If the runner slides into the plate in an appropriate manner, he shall not be adjudged to have violated Rule 7.13. A slide shall be deemed appropriate, in the case of a feet first slide, if the runner's buttocks and legs should hit the ground before contact with the catcher. In the case of a head first slide, a runner shall be deemed to have slid appropriately if his body should hit the ground before contact with the catcher.

Unless the catcher is in possession of the ball, the catcher cannot block the pathway of the runner as he is attempting to score. If, in the judgment of the umpire, the catcher without possession of the ball blocks the pathway of the runner, the umpire shall call or signal the runner safe. Notwithstanding the above, it shall not be considered a violation of this Rule 7.13 if the catcher blocks the pathway of the runner in order to field a throw, and the umpire determines that the catcher could not have fielded the ball without blocking the pathway of the runner and that contact with the runner was unavoidable.

To me, the bolded part made the call what it was. He couldn't give Melky a lane because he had to go up the line to field the throw

That bolded part of the rule needs to be removed. It should be the fault of the defensive team if the throw is up the line.

Please tell me why Boston would want to part with this guy?

FA after this season, plays for a non-contender, good relievers are overvalued at the trade deadline. It's a no-brainer.

To get good players that can help more than what Miller can provide? We've seen how volatile relievers are with Santos and Delabar so you might as well trade them at their highest value when your team isn't competing.

Just no.

that's pretty damning... the fact that you know who you are being referred to at 50 posts isn't a good thing.

Exactly; well said sir. Just like AA did last season. Oh, wait.........

To me, a simple solution would be the following. You have batters boxes... Draw a catchers box in front of the plate and that's where his feet have to be until he has possession of the ball. If he has to move out of the box on the inside of the base lines or on the first base side of home, no problem. But if they move Into the foul territory up the third base line before they have the ball... If contact is made by the runner... He's safe.

I agree. The way the rule is as of now,it's to the benefit of the defensive team to make throws at home a bit to the third base side, knowing the runner isn't allowed to touch the catcher. If he does, they can claim the throw took the catcher there.

Idiotic rule.

Even though that inning didn't go well, it's nice to have guys like Valencia and Reimold available for pinch-hitting.

Credit where credit is due. Fatass improved the bench.

WC sudden death game against Garrett Richards isn't good for us. #MalditosOrioles

WC sudden death game against Marcus Stroman isn't good for them.

No reason why we shouldn't beat the s*** out of Houston.

That series against the O's is going to be fun. Going to try to get to at least two of them.

You think all 3 will be sellouts? I would be disappointed with anything less than 35k

It isn't Metallijay. Maaaaaaybe Howard Butler but in all likelihood it's someone from the old board.
