Spoonovic Verified Member Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 Seems like TheScore.com has laid off a bunch of bloggers and writers. Drew Fairservice and Dustin Parkes are the ones I’ve seen say their goodbyes on twitter so far. I liked their work. Wonder if Stoeton is one of the ones let go?

I guess it doesn't pay to write well. Stoeten is garbage but his s***** blog probably gets enough page hits to survive while vastly superior writers get the axe.

Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 I know of a certain blue jays blog that is looking to regain popularity.. I'm sure they will be employed again soon.

What blog might that be? It's a shame Stoeton wasn't one of the guys getting the axe. I can't remember how many time I've see "half-assed" in his blog titles over the past couple months, the man puts very little effort into his job.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 I wouldn't be surprised if Stoeten stays on. His posts get hundreds of comments because of the following he's built up over years. Which, it should be noted, Parkes helped build.

eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 I'm 90% sure I saw Stoeten at No Frills at Dufferin Mall on the weekend. I cannot 100% confirm because he was not wearing his usual sweaty vintage Blue Jays hat. I can confirm, however, that the fat man in question did not appear to be overly satisfied with his life.

I saw Parkes at a game last year, he's like 6'5.
Pulk_Pull Verified Member Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 If they cancel the score app I don't know how I could continue on with life. You do not have to worry about theScore's mobile app going anywhere. If anything, this was a strategic move to push more resources to the mobile side. Tough to watch talented people go but their blogs weren't generating the kind of traffic that's needed to employ full-time feature writers.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 Which, it should be noted, Parkes helped build. Why did he ever quit that? He quit the Jays and then became a Giants fan.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 I hope the Drunk Jays fans podcast keeps going. Yeah it's not a bad podcast.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 Really a shame, their work was very well done.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 Why did he ever quit that? He quit the Jays and then became a Giants fan. Once he became editor of Getting Blanked, he didn't really post that much on DJF. During that time, he also, as you noted, lost interest in the Jays. It wasn't a calculated move to become a Giants fan, it just sort of happened.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 I saw Parkes at a game last year, he's like 6'5. He seems like he'd be a pain to hang out with. Nice enough guy but so pessimistic.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 I love all this complaining from other journalists as if they were fired without cause. You would think writers would have critical thinking skills, but no. Do you think anyone has sympathy for all the horse carriage drivers or typists when they lost their jobs due to changing technology and industry/consumer trends? I guess these people, like Klaw expect that business would rather keep deadweight employees, further endangering the company's bottomline, and then perhaps in another year or so lay off additional employees who would have not been laid off if these cuts happened sooner.

eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 What was in his cart? He surprisingly had a healthy assortment of vegetables in his cart. Not a Twinkie to be found.
vdubmvp Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 I saw Parkes at a game last year, he's like 6'5. I remember my friend once taking a picture of some random guy at a game and sending it to me, and it ended up being him. I don't really know why I'm mentioning this.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 How much did they make being "professional" bloggers anyway? I'm surprised they got paid anything.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 How much did they make being "professional" bloggers anyway? I'm surprised they got paid anything. Yeah I like Drew and Parkes' writing and appreciated their perspective, but I've been wondering for a while how theScore's blogs can be profitable. They don't have ads and the content they produce isn't unique enough to get a ton of traffic.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 What's with all the sarcastic remarks? These guys had genuine baseball knowledge and walked a fine line between being a fan and a baseball writer - they were easier to relate to then anybody else I've paid attention to in the "media", so I'm a bit sad. I don't thinks any sarcasm was aimed at Parkes and Fairservice, the guys who were let go. The sarcasm was aimed at Stoeten, a far inferior (and pretty douchy) writer who is likely staying.
