Well, they probably are unaware that Kratz is worth $75 million.

They really need to incorporate pitch framing into WAR ASAP so people on the fringe won't break a rib laughing at a comment like this.

The discussion on pitch framing really confuses me. I mean I realize that the skill has been somewhat quantified, at least to the point that there appears to be evidence of both good and bad framers but how do you put a value on a skill that theoretically shouldn't exist at all? Either a thrown ball crosses the strike zone or it doesn't. Shouldn't any good umpire negate any potential WARish gains from a catcher who essentially is good at trickery?

Even the good umpires get fooled consistently by the top framers.

I do agree with the notion that this is a stupid skill though. With robo umps it would vanish entirely.

But until that day, it's very valuable and probably the easiest way to pick up wins cheaply.

Does WAR factor runners that don't advance because of a strong fielding arm? To me this is up their with pitch framing in terms of things that make a difference but aren't necessarily valued.

Pretty sure it does, yes.

I think you are going to start to see more and more good framers. I believe it is a teachable skill to an extent, like you could make a below average framer into an average one maybe even above average.

It is incorporated.

But it's effect on run differential is nowhere near as large as pitch framing. Mostly because there are many instances where pitch framing comes into play during a single game where runners taking the extra base on a hit to the outfield happens at most a couple of times.

ok... I have a question. all the talk is about the value of Valencia as a platoon bat but can he play D?

Not sure but I heard that he likes the D

No matter how much anyone argues he's worth, Kratz will hardly play in KC anyway. Of course they're not happy.

Slightly under league average defender by the looks of most stats. (UZR 150 and dWAR)

Why wouldn't the play the greatest catcher that ever lived?

If Kratz is worth 75M, Perez must be worth 275M

Holy f***ing strawman. Wow.

Well, this is a quote from the linked article...

"In Toronto he can platoon with left-handed third baseman Juan Francisco and serve as a defensive upgrade."

So this random KC Royals blog feels that he's an upgrade over Francisco defensively...

Francisco is pretty sure-handed and has a good arm, I'd take that any day at 3B.

Great arm, OKAY hands, below-average range. I love Francisco, I think he's a great bench piece for this team, but I'm trying to be realistic about his fielding there.

Yeah, and that's why I love Francisco, because despite being a... well, I think everyone can say a below average defender, he's still put up numbers that can impress.
