CJ-Freeway Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Even though we all kind of knew nothing was going to happen, it's probably a bit more disappointing this year since we're a head in the wild card and could take the division yet it doesn't seem like they want to get better and are content with what they have while other teams, who are good, get a bit better. Easier said than done on the trade front, especially since giving up some of the prospects we have left wouldn't make sense in some deals ie a rental who we won't resign but middle of a pennant race, first chance in 21 years to make the playoffs and they seem to think 'getting back to full strength' is like a trade when at full strength it wasn't enough. Not a bad team but unlike the season, from here on out every game counts and especially in the play offs there's no such thing as we've had a bad series we'll get them next time. Exactly. Usually, teams who lead divisions or wild cards at the trade deadline make a move. This team needed another quality arm, starter or reliever. So depressing.

JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Exactly. Usually, teams who lead divisions or wild cards at the trade deadline make a move. This team needed another quality arm, starter or reliever. So depressing. It's one thing if the team isn't in contention or on the outside looking in (ie Rays) but closest the team has been in years and it's almost like they're rolling over or thinking they're good enough. Well, other teams who will be heading to the post season made moves. You can't get everything you want, but it seems like they don't seem to understand that. For all we know maybe AA is still trying to make a move but the asking price is too high. I don't want to burn what's left of the prospects for a rental or someone who might not be as good, but if you can grab a guy that might make a bit of difference you have to do it at this point. Still a chance to do it in August when maybe some of those teams who are on the cusp slip out of contention or realize they're finished but I don't think many fans would be too upset to see the Jays pay a higher price than they normally would if it means getting the division crown, possibly making it to the WS, and even a shot at winning it all. At the same point I don't want to see Sanchez, Pompey and such traded for a rental. It's difficult thing to do but it seems like here is out shot 3 game lead in the WC, 2.5 games out of first let's lock this down and add since other teams are and have. AA pulled off some trades before that no one expected so why not now even if it's a player no one was thinking about? Easier said than done but it would be nice for them to say here's something else let's take it. August might happen but at the same point it might be too late. A trade for the sake of making one is worthless but grab someone who might help would be nice providing it's not a steep price. We have to look down the road a couple years too. I think they're relying too much on waiting for Morrow to come back and somehow make a positive impact.

Anyways, even if we miraculously beat the O's and take the division, we're gonna get our asses kicked by Tigers or A's, no question about it.

bowld Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 We did the right thing. No moves we could have made today would have pushed us over the Angels, A's or Tigers so at least we can keep our prospects and likely still win a WC spot
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 True. Anyways, even if we miraculously beat the O's and take the division, we're gonna get our asses kicked by Tigers or A's, no question about it. Sadly, I have to agree. Getting into the playoffs right now might not be so bad/tough. But facing the A and Tigers with those staffs A LOT would have to go right since they're not going to allow a lot of runs even against a potent offense.

There's a few series left against the Os so maybe get lucky if not, WC isn't bad but I'd prefer the division over one game do or die.

I think that is why you didn't even see the O's make a huge splash. They likely could have upgraded their staff but their rotation would still be s***.

Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 I for one am glad we still have Norris Pompey Sanchez

I agree, my point was that this team as is, is likely good enough to make the playoffs in one way or another. No moves we made today would have sent us over Oakland or Detroit though so why give up the future when we can likely still make playoffs as is
