HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 The movement on his fastball is just so ridiculous that it seems all he has to do is aim for the center of the plate and let the movement do the work. He doesn't have to aim for the corners at all with that fastball. The pitch that Ortiz hit to left field was a perfect example. It was right down the middle but it didn't go there straight, and Ortiz hit it just below. A lot of his fastballs were up so once we start seeing some that are down we'll see a lot more worm killers.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Far better?? Did you watch the game last night? Have you seen Sanchez pitch before? I'd love to hear the reasoning behind Stroman being "far better and likely always will be". You might wanna give your toque a twirl cause you're out to lunch saying s*** like that. Sanchez still has the ability/stuff to be the best pitcher in the organization. But he's still a significant gamble due to command issues and could bust Romero-style. Stroman has generally been more projectable as a solid mid-rotation starter and has looked the part IN THE MAJORS for 2 solid months this year The verdict on Sanchez is still at least 2 half seasons away IYAM
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 At least in the first inning he pitched (which was the only one I saw), his fastball was consistently down (for him) ... down like I've never seen it before, actually. And he was still being elevated. No idea what he did in the second inning. so you go to the effort of watching him pitch in the minors, but you couldn't bother to watch him in the majors. "Most don't know what they're looking at." I suppose you do...lol. Even if you do know more than the average fan, you don't know more than the real scouts in the games. You're not as smart as you think you are. I know you lawyers like to think you know everything, so I'm sure you will be cheering for Sanchez to fail, or you will have to admit you were wrong.
jays76 Verified Member Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Loving the overkill and over the top adulation for 2 great innings. I wonder how many scouts were there? Now is the perfect time to ship him out of town as part of a package to make a run.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 you will have to admit you were wrong. Ha! Ha! Ha!
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Put Stroman in the pen and he turns to s***. I'm sorry but you simply do not have the evidence to support that claim.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Hilarious how everyone blasts calling him up, he throws two good innings, and now everyone is singing his praises. He looked good but it was two innings! That shouldn't be changing anyone's mind. When I come home from work I don't have to look at the score to know if the Jays won...I just have to look at the number of reported posts. I missed the Sanchez outing but have watched 5 games in the minors this year. Did anyone expect a guy who's had huge control problems, but still remained a top 50 prospect, to not be absolutely filthy? For Sanchez, just like his Dirty Sanchez brother Danny in Cleveland, it's going to be about pitch counts. I did some data on his count in the first and how the game went. When he has his stuff early and keeps it low in the first he's been good for the game. When he has a high count in the first (even when he gives up no runs) he's struggled. Might be part of why they want him as a reliever, just a confidence boost for him.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 No one that went to Duke has any issues between the ears.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 If anything, i'd say Stroman has more Romeroesq bust potential. Romero's problems aren't with his stuff, it's between his ears. Put Stroman in the pen and he turns to s***. Why? Probably because he has such a huge chip on his shoulder that he can't wrap his head around being there. For me RED FLAG! ala J.A.Happ. So far, Sanchez has embraced his move to the pen and hit the ground running. Which one ends up better in the end could very well come down to makeup and from what i've seen so far Sanchez has a considerable edge in that department. Disagree with every single thing you say here Stroman having a couple bad weeks in the pen during his MLB debut does not mean he could never be good in the pen And he's been a GOOD starter And his attitude might make him better than his stuff would suggest. Fearlessness is good for a pitcher.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Gibbers was always confrontational and bitter, Moogy is no different I know what you mean. I really don't think it's him (I don't think you honestly do either) but I see your point. Gibbers used to rage and fight a lot and now he (by his on admission) deliberately stays out of conflicts. Good on him. But he is someone I can imagine wishing he had an alternate account to rage with sometimes. But stylistically he is so different, and Gibbers comes here in small visits. Moogy lives here. No way it's him.
IBTrini Verified Member Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Well the stuff looks nasty as hell. Don't think that surprises anybody. I feel like he could probably throw about 105 if he actually used his lower half. Let's maybe not declare his curve a far better than average mlb offering (or better than Stroman's) until he induces at least 1 swing and miss with it. Edit: didn't mean for the post to reply to yours. I agree that it is nasty stuff. Just look at the batter's stance at the end and you will see how someone is gonna get hurt.

No way it's him. Ya. Gibbers wanted to meet to seriously fight me once at a gate at Rogers Center, on the old Board, when he was arguing with me over Snider who he thought was going to be the 2nd coming of Christ. Bitter sometimes and has too much disdain for avg fan who pays the bills IMO but he knows his ball. I think he weights too heavily on prospects, but respect his point of view. He was over the top on D'arnaud who may become what he expected. Catchers often develop later.

Yeah it's still early but D'Arnaud so far has only played 91 games in the majors over almost 2 seasons, and has provided replacement level performance, and Syndergaard has been injured and mediocre. Not a good start for either. Odds that at least one of them becomes an above average player are probably still pretty good though? I'd still bet on Syndergaard.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 The article wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Yeah it was solid although it was pretty strange that they made no mention that Sanchez has had struggles of his own. Him throwing in the majors as a reliever doesn't really bring much clarity to his outlook at all. It's not really Sanchez's situation that has been made clearer, it's more Syndergaard's that's been muddied.
