shortstop Verified Member Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 Last year's deals brought massive interest where before there wasn't - jays sold hope & on paper that was a contending team Now a big trade or two will still provide optimism but won't put as many in the seats ...diminishing returns... The fan base needs & wants a winner - it ultimately won't be sold on hope in whatever form Jays will either fall & rebuild, treadmill b/c close to a playoff spot & we're right back at it next year trying to make the playoffs...or the team will make the playoffs & big pressure on Rogers to spend more
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 11, 2014 Author Posted July 11, 2014 hurl, the cynic in me says Valentine was brought in to Boston to crash that ship to sell the fanbase on "rebuilding"... or perhaps brought in with the hope his personality/approach would help crash that ship... I love that theory and would not 100% discount it. 99% maybe but...
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 I love that theory and would not 100% discount it. 99% maybe but... how many players would have to give up to bring in a sense of humor?
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 To the complainers: It's okay for Dickey to bring it up in his book, but it's not okay to joke around about it?? Nothing is off limits for jokes in the Provincial jails. Hey, if you think child molestation is a big yuk go for it Gibbers. I have no idea why someone having the guts to openly tell their story in a book (I guess the assumption is he told it only to make money?) makes it suddenly a joke worthy subject but whatever floats your boat.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 Or just watch a team that may never win. See how extremist overreactions on both sides of the fence work? What do you care? You don't care if they win or lose. So sell the farm now, don't sell the farm now ... it's all good, right? You're right. When you boil it all down. I don't care who wins or loses, it's baseball. I love baseball. Although I'd prefer to watch a team with hope and thoughts of getting better, coupled with financial flexibility to make further moves. The team we're watching is a team that is what it is with nothing else left to think beyond....a good baseball team with a bunch of luck needed to make the playoffs. The rotation is not a playoff worthy rotation and the lineup for the next month is not a playoff worthy lineup. Maybe we can call it, Empty the Farm V2.0
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 why not trade one of Bats or EE to extend the years of contention? remember what happened the year after Halladay was traded? Romero, Cecil, Morrow, and Marcum were one of the better SP 4some in AL Attendance dropped a bit but 2 years after Halladay was traded attendance was back to where it was in his final year trading Bats is not that big of a deal... a lot of fans don't even like the guy!

CHRIS Verified Member Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 remember what happened the year after Halladay was traded? Romero, Cecil, Morrow, and Marcum were one of the better SP 4some in AL The ability of these four pitchers had very little to do, if anything, with Halladay's departure. I've heard the argument that Halladay's departure allowed these guys to "step up", but I'm not sure how much stock I put into that. Imagine if we hadn't traded Halladay and 5 guys like that in the rotation? I really not sure what you're trying to suggest here; that if we trade Bautista we'll have other outfielders step up? Who? Pillar? Glenn? Gose? Mastro? These guys aren't succeeding because Bautista is blocking them. They're not succeeding because they're not very good, at least relative to what Bautista does for this team.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 11, 2014 Author Posted July 11, 2014 Why? Because this season isn't a write off... Right You also don't trade your best player when you have no one even remotely adequate to replace him with
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 Right You also don't trade your best player when you have no one even remotely adequate to replace him with Unless said player returns his replacement, ++
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 Unless said player returns his replacement, ++ For example would Seattle move Saunders, Franklin, and an A grade pitching prospect for Bautista?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 11, 2014 Author Posted July 11, 2014 Unless said player returns his replacement, ++ True, but teams haredly ever trade MLB talent for MLB talent at the same position obviously. A quality SP and good OF prospect would make sense IF we were rebuilding. But we're not there yet.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 Some folks don't have the same hang-ups. Some folks are hypersensitive to certain subjects. You can't please everyone. I don't see the o2bunchaletters joke as very offensive. It was rather generic and aimed at a grown man, who seems to have come to grips with his issues and come out the other side ... and made a few bucks off the topic. I might be offended if he was degrading a child in some way regarding child molestation. And, no, you should definitely NOT doubt my concern regarding the topic of child abuse, in any form. There's virtually nothing I find more vile. But that doesn't equate to it being completely unmentionable in the realm of humor. Wouldn't call it a hang up but maybe I am sensitive to it. Had a nephew badly abused @ 8 years old. Guy went to prison. Kid is still messed up @ 21. I'm friends with Sheldon Kennedy who also wrote a book he might have made some money on but I personally see that him telling his story has helped tons of kids come forward and deal with this as well as raise awareness for the issues. I also see him do 99.9% of his work on their behalf for free still and countless service work. I wouldn't laugh at jokes about SK either or the issue. So I probably am overly sensitive. I'll keep that in mind. Back to baseball!
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 Move bautista to 3rd and trade for Rios, keep Lawrie at 2nd when he returns

It was tasteless just for the sake of being tasteless and we weren't even talking about Dickey at the time.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 11, 2014 Author Posted July 11, 2014 Move bautista to 3rd and trade for Rios, keep Lawrie at 2nd when he returns Don't think I like it, but what would it atke to get Rios and Soria??
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 Move bautista to 3rd and trade for Rios, keep Lawrie at 2nd when he returns Last time we moved Jose to 3rd he got back issues and was clear he just wasn't as comfortable there. Ultimately that can mess with his O. It did with E5. Its doable but not worth the risk. If we get saddled with Reyes and cant move him Id like to see him moved to 2nd.
shortstop Verified Member Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 brainstorming...Reyes could be our full time switch hitting DH since he may be more fragile and of less range than JB & EE the $22M DH!
Governator Community Moderator Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 brainstorming...Reyes could be our full time switch hitting DH since he may be more fragile and of less range than JB & EE the $22M DH! and then you could play shortstop.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 Right You also don't trade your best player when you have no one even remotely adequate to replace him with I consider Gose easily a better defender than Jose. As for taking the hit offensively, hopefully the pieces you would be getting back for Jose would pick up the slack up for the garbage we'll be putting out in other spots.
