Rasmus will be gone . Morrow better be gone and Happ, Janssen/Santos will likely be gone . With the new posting system I highly doubt we ever get a top Japanese pitcher. We just have to develop our own . That said we could add a salary dump like Prado for nothing in prospects.

The team is actually not too far away from having a pretty nice rotation. It would be nice to see them go get a front rotation arm using the money coming off the books when Buehrle and Dickey are gone.

(top-20 SP)

Stroman

Hutchison

Norris

Could be the deal as soon as 2015. With Norris' emergence, things are actually looking OK rotation-wise going forward.

Wasn't there talk Utley would refuse a trade?

He has stated he will not waive his no trade clause. That said he may waive it to go somewhere he wants and that sure as hell WON"T be to Toronto. i don't even consider Utley as a candidate

Chase Headley please. Then extend him while his numbers are down.

This. With how much money he is making he shouldn't cost much more than an average prospect if we eat the salary. I doubt he would want to sign an extension this season but maybe we could sign him if he performs the rest of the season to a short term deal so he could reestablish value himself. The team really needs an infielder while Lawrie is out. Francisco has fallen off a cliff.

As long as no one gets stupid and trade away our young arms . When ever you deal a bunch of young arms odds are you trade the wrong one . We already did that once and I'll be pissed if we do that again . Pretty obvious no free agent pitchers want to come here.

I trust Heyman more than that guy. This from MLBTR

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports adds, also via Twitter, that while the Blue Jays are looking at second base options, they’re not considering Daniel Murphy of the Mets. Toronto is looking for more defense that Murphy offers at the position. It’s been reported that the Mets could extend Murphy rather than trade him. I examined what a Murphy extension might cost the Mets yesterday.

I have trouble believing that the Jays care about bad defense.

I would lean towards a 2nd or 3rd baseman. It's cheaper. I couldn't bare to get a guy like shark.... give up a tonne and have him just leave in a year and a half... all the while Norris is dominating for another team.

They've only been looking for a 2B since 2012, I'm sure NOW they'll find their man.

I'd go for an everyday player plus a bench guy, ideally a guy that can platoon with Lind.

Instead of making a push this year I'd rather see the Jays be patient in 2014 and instead make a hard push for Kenta Maeda when he gets posted & keep the farm intact. I still don't understand why the Jays have their 5 year contract limit in place. It's not like they're prevented from trading a player in year 3 or 4 if they ink them to a 7 year deal to avoid full risk.

7 years is a bit risky on a pitcher. Especially if they will be mid 30s when it expires. If we need to go to 6 years to sign someone really good who is young then ok, or go with option years. Either way, have you been following the Jays? They aren't going to get Maeda, lol

The yanks/dodgers or another team are going to sign him. The Jays are good at coming up with excuses for not signing international players, that's about it.

Headley has a herniated disc in his back.

I'm aware. That won't likely hinder him in 2015 though.

Back problems dont go away, they only get worse with age.

Headley has never hit the DL with a back problem, and herniated discs are treatable. If you can buy low both via trade and contract extension, I think it's a great time to do it. Good player, down year.

Even if we have him for the rest of the season Headley is an upgrade offensviely most likely and defensively. I hate all this talk about how the Blue Jays have played much better defence this season. The team has above average defence at only 2 positions when fully healthy (CF and 2B or 3B which ever Lawrie plays).

Navarro, Melky, Reyes, Encarnacion are all well below average defensively. Thats half the team.

Yeah. Headley will bring above-average 3B defense, and should do better than the 81 wRC+ he has so far. It reduces Francisco to a pinch hit role, and eliminates one of Tolleson/Kawasaki from the roster. Considering his trade value has likely been thoroughly destroyed, I think he makes a lot of sense.

Wouldn't he have about the same trade value as Lawrie?

Doubt it. Lawrie is owed like 250K and has three more years of team control. Headley is owed $4-5 million and is a free agent after the season.

With no guarantee of him signing an extension with the Jays, why would we want someone with back problems, who is barely hitting over .200, even if it is just for the remainder of the season.

Surely, there must be someone else out there better than this.

Read the posts above, as they are answering your exact question. Above average defence and a guy who has hit at a very good level in the previous 2 seasons. A clear upgrade over what we have.

Because he's likely a 1-2 win improvement ROS at what is likely a low cost, with the possible added benefit of talking extension with him before he hits the market. I mean, if the cost is, say, Sean Nolin and Andy Burns or something, why not?

I guess I just don't like trading for guys with back problems. What about Prado.

Prado is having a very similar season to Headley but is owed a ton of money over the next couple years where as Headley is a free agent. Headley also has hit very well in the last 2 seasons compared to Prado.

I agree on every point regarding Headley, however I have it on good authority from Jonn that Headley has been awful the past couple of years, but don't count 2012 or anything because career years don't count.

The entire Padres team is performing well under projections, it's a total f***ing anomaly if you ask me.

I don't know what's more amazing, the fact they have a team 72 wRC+ (lowest in majors by quite a bit) with a combined 0.8 offensive WAR, or that they're NOT in last place in their division.

Too close to the smack and s*** coming out of Mexico
