anotherhomer Verified Member Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 I was thinking about something and give the money being spend, if the Jays had done things differently, they could had been looking at a much better roster while spending even less money. This is based on the players that were available at this time, but basically, for the money being spend, the Jays could had gotten Darvish, Anibal Sanchez, and a star 2B, while keeping promising prospect Henderson Alvarez. Current money spend on a few players- 70M Jose Reyes - 16M Mark Buehrle - 19M RA DIckey - 12M Adam Lind - 7M Brandon Morrow - 8M Rickey Romero - 7.5M Scenario - If jays got it right, Don't do Miami Marlins Trade Don't do RA Dickey Trade Keep Henderon Alvarez and Adeiny Trade Yunel (had to because of slur) Don't sign Romero, Lind and Morrow to contract extensions, and go year by year Sign Anibal Sanchez in 2012 off-season Sign Yu Darvish in 2011 off-season to huge bucks Trade the prospects NOah, Justin N. and Travis D'Arnaud for 2nd Baseman instead You got this instead Henderon Alvarez - a 4 something ERA guy in the AL, min. salary Romero - 0 he be cut Morrow - 6M Lind - 3 M Anibal Sanchez - 18M (give him 5 yr/90M) Yu Darvish - 20M (55M posting fee, plus 6 yr/66M) Super 2B (say Ian Kinsler) - 15M Total: 62M For 8M less, you get the following: Rotation: Anibal Sanchez, Darvish, Alvarez, Stroman and Hutchison 1B - EE 2B - Kinsler or super 2B SS - Adeiny, so so batt 3B - lawrie C - Naravo CF - Rasmus RF - Bautista LF - Melky Cabrer No 3 catch roster, Gose - 4 Outfielder Basically, you don't have Reyes speed but you a SS who's good defensively and durable. To compensate, you get a quality 2B. and a much stronger rotation
pickoff22 Verified Member Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 Pretty easy to start a what-if scenario thread with multiples decisions that could have been wiser for any MLB team. Pointless.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 They tried to sign Anibal Sanchez. Remember to look at the starting rotation at the end of 2012 after Romero's implosion. The team would've gone into 2013 expected to lose 90 games instead of being expected to contend and this matters to the owners of this franchise. It is what it is, they're in the thick of the P/O race with an improving farm system, they're trying to balance competing now with having a solid farm system. Not that I agree with everything they've done, but this franchise just doesn't do long-term rebuilds.

True, true And they just can't attract those valuable second-tier free agents They're never going to sign the Canos, Pujols, Fielders etc, and I'm actually happy about that. Those 9-10 year deals are going to be crippling. But that second tier of guys just below those ones (like Sanchez and Beltran and Garza and Ellsbury) is where AA would probably LIKE to play. But they spurn the team because they get so many offers. He's stuck trading for guys like those, and signing third tier free agents like Navarro and Francisco. Well, maybe not STUCK, but he refuses to outbid Detroit and NYY for those second level guys, rightly or wrongly. He probably COULD get one if he were willing to do so.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 It's always nice to dream, but you can't just assume these players want to come here.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 This hindsight s*** is f***ing stupid. What happened is done with. Look forward and learn from the past.
BlueJays20xx Verified Member Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 Didn't really like the trades the past 2 years. I really wanted AA to sign Anibal Sanchez and trade for Doug Fister. Not #1 guys but surely #2-3 solid guys that won't gut the farm. Also really wanted to sign Yu Darvish and we have a very solid rotation or Darvish, Sanchez, Fister, Hutch, Stroman/Happ and won't have to deal with this Dickey, Hendricks crap that were throwing out there and never would've seen Bonifacio with his LoViste nonsense. +Darvish +Sanchez +Fister -Dickey -Thole -Bhuerle -Reyes -Bonifacio -Rogers Kept: Alvarez Gomes Aviles Hech Escobar Farm still intact If they wanted, they could probably have signed Tanaka as well. That'd be an insane rotation Darvish, Tanaka, Sanchez, Fister, Alvarez/Hutch 1b EE 2b Izturis/Kawasaki SS Hech/Escobar 3b Lawrie/Francisco OF Rasmus/Bautista/Cabrera C Navarro/Kratz RP Cecil, Janssen, Santos, Delabar, Loup, Redmond, Rasmussen, McGowan

Lol a little harsh Chap but I agree. The board has in recent weeks has taken a big step in moving on from the 2013 offseason and that's a very good thing.

He tried and failed, neither his fault - both stories public knowledge Can't really be upset with AA for those two
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 Meh. New member. He put in a good effort. Lets give him some slack Yeah I agree. He hasn't been here for the past year and a half reading the countless 2013 offseason posts/threads. This board beat that dead horse to a pulp.

And don't forget if we had drafted Trout and traded for Felix too. Then we'd have Darvish, Tanaka, Sanchez, Fister and Felix with Alvarez and Hutch in the background. Then Mike Trout in CF. And we should have signed Cano and convinced him to sign for 5 yrs, $45 million. Then we wouldn't have any worries at 2B. Plus don't forget if we kept D'arnaud and he didn't get injured and actually was good and instead of being bad at the MLB level he hit for over .300 and got over 125 RBIs and threw out 95% of base stealers we would be in even better shape. That would have be sweet.
BlueJays20xx Verified Member Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 I'm not going that far back. Either way, this seems like a hindsight thread, might as well post what a perfect off season would've taken us to the past 2 years.
Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
