G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 How long was he banned for anyways? 2 days
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 2 days 2 days too long. Bring him back! This is ridiculous! This board isn't the same without Spanky. He's one of a kind!
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 ^ This We have let Spanky get away with stuff that we wouldn't let new posters get away with Need to even the standards
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 I say give him the permanent ban until he completes ~250 posts strictly on the old board. That would be a cruel and unusual punishment.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 That would be a cruel and unusual punishment. None of us could survive that now
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 None of us could survive that now I would just spam the living s*** out of it
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 I would just spam the living s*** out of it Actually that COULD be fun
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 Any time I go and post there ZeeExponential jumps all over me complaining about the new board
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 I would just spam the living s*** out of it so it would just be like any given day over here
8D Verified Member Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 i think spanky is his own case. i think he's too much of a diehard to ever leave forever, and i don't think it's right to outright ban him. but clearly this guy has over 9000 lives. i think a two or three day ban every now and then when he goes off the rails is about right. just enough time for him to cool off and reset back to normal... a bit, lol. rinse and repeat.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 so it would just be like any given day over here I really haven't posted all that much lately lol
Candy Maldonado Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 By the way, it's too hard to find individual posts via search. Can this be fixed?? For some reason if you click 'search multiple content types' then click back to 'search single content type' it gives you more options and allows you to display results as posts.
LunchBox Verified Member Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 We have let Spanky get away with stuff that we wouldn't let new posters get away with Need to even the standards Isn't Spanky a donor? Arguably that entitles him to a certain amount of leeway not afforded to the average poster. Partisanship was a foreseeable consequence of accepting donations from posters, but obviously that ship has sailed.
Maahfaace Verified Member Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 I was kind of pissed everyone was calling me Dogg when i first started posting here, although at the time i just thought the board was filled with wannabe gangsters using 90's slang. After seeing constant barrages at new people accusing them of being someone they are not, and this whole "sherlock holmes research your past sentence nuances crap" filling threads, i can see why people would shy away from actively contributing to this board. I for one, would like to see bans for people who are endlessly filling threads with accusations stated above, as they seem to be the catalyst to all this ******** fighting.

What happens when it's true, though? When a guy isn't providing substance and is obviously someone else, he shouldn't stick around. I'm all for giving people second chances but if they're being disruptive then it's justified.

I'm all for giving people second chances but if they're being disruptive then it's justified. Bans for being a douche full-time should still apply, my point is, pretty much every thread is hi-jacked with accusations (unfounded or not) and this seems to be what is causing all the calamity. I really enjoy reading people's thoughts on the jays, good or bad, not peoples thoughts on who is who, or who they were. As soon as it pops up in a thread i usually stop reading it now, as I know the jays will no longer be discussed.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 (edited) What happens when it's true, though? When a guy isn't providing substance and is obviously someone else, he shouldn't stick around. I'm all for giving people second chances but if they're being disruptive then it's justified. Compile a list of evidence and send it either through a "report" or a PM to one of the mods. That makes everything easier. In most cases, someone who's been permanently banned should never be allowed back. I get that the guys around here like to give second chances, and even though I don't necessarily agree with it, I get it. It's when people waste those second chances is when I don't see why they continue to get rope. Yes Spanky was only banned for two days and Metallijay would have been perma-banned, but that's also because Metallijay has gotten way too many chances. That being said, he was good today (at least in the GDT). Never thought I'd say that, but if we can somehow witness the miracle of him turning it around, it never hurts to have another poster who is as active as he is. Edit: Speaking on second chances though, with the new infraction system in place, where people are handed incremental bans, I don't think it will ever again be justifiable to allow someone to come back after a permanent ban. If someone burns through their infractions and gets repetitively banned to the point of being permanently shut down, any dupe they make from that point forward should be immediately perma-banned, long before it ever even gets to the point where people are ruining every thread by "hounding" around in their sherlock trenchcoats. Chappy Community Moderator Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Compile a list of evidence and send it either through a "report" or a PM to one of the mods. That makes everything easier. This. We really don't need people starting stuff on the forum with accusations. Even if they are true, there are much better ways to handle this by reporting or sending a PM to a mod. At the end of the day if the regulars claim they want a better board, then please do what's best for the forum.

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 (edited) If you're considered a troll and it's gotten to the point where everybody hates you, I don't know why you feel like you have to continue to provoke people and make it worse, as if you're past some point of no return. Most of us here aren't *******s just for the sake of being *******s. The mods here are ridiculously lenient (sometimes to a fault) and I don't understand why more people don't take advantage of that to better themselves and make the most of a second (or third.. or fourth..) chance. I wasn't on the old board, so I don't know if I have this right, but "Gibbers", as far as I know, was widely disliked there, and yet he came here, made a new name for himself (literally), and became a quality poster... mostly. I don't think anyone even knew who he was until he had the nuts to admit it. I still disagree with him all the time, but at least I respect him because I know what he's saying is genuinely his opinion, and not just to provoke or incite other posters. I don't know if anyone even cares about his past anymore, because it's irrelevant now. The moderation here is so relaxed, that it actually irritates me sometimes, because I've been a moderator before and I know how tight other sites run their ships. Hell, a lot of the stuff that even I post, I'd never get away with anywhere else. But I understand why it's like that here; the simple fact is that it's run by other forum posters. This site isn't out to make a profit. It was made by people who are active forum posters just like the rest of us, so that we'd all have a place to discuss something we're passionate about without being constantly bombarded with toxicity. And every day that gets taken for granted. This board gives you a unique situation that you'll be hard-pressed to find anywhere else. There's almost no filter on what you can or can't say (speaking of which, you're all mouth-breathing troglodytes and I hate you all), there's no censorship, people are free to talk about almost anything, and the entire place is run by guys that understand and share the exact same frustrations as the rest of us. Instead of abusing that freedom, why not make the most of it? What can there possibly be to lose? Does anyone actually enjoy spending all of their time incessantly bickering with everybody else? If you get banned (which is pretty damn hard to do here), instead of lashing out like a woman scorned, why not take it as a blessing. You get to start over, you get a completely clean slate, and none of the stupid s*** you said will show up in your post history. As hostile and confrontational as some of us are towards trolls, people here aren't uptight and they will give you another shot. Or at least I will. I have no problem burying hatchets as deep as JP Arencibia's career, if people show that they can man up and do the same. Maybe that doesn't mean much, but if nothing else, you'll have one of the more argumentative pricks on this site in your corner and we can gang up on the hive** together. No matter how different everyone here is, and no matter how many redeeming or irritating qualities each of us has, everybody here has at least one thing in common (exception: Hurl). Based on that fact alone, it shouldn't be as hard as it is to get along. This isn't just a problem with the "trolls", because I know full well that I need to improve as well. All of us, established members, veterans, everyone needs to step their game up. You can laugh it off as me being cheesy but consider one thing. On June 27, 2013, less than six weeks after this forum was created, there were 441 accounts (334 active) registered on the site. That's a membership base that most forums can only dream of starting with. But today, almost a full year later, there are only 843 (all duplicate, banned and inactive accounts included), of which there are only 367 active accounts. With all due respect, that's pretty atrocious. There's been virtually no growth and we've gotten fewer sign ups over the course of the entire past year than we did in the first month. If you think I've made those numbers up, the proof is right here. Considering the boom with which this place launched off, we've done a pretty great job of alienating and repelling new people since then, and unless people have a problem seeing this site become bigger and better, that sucks and it needs to change. TLDR: Really the only thing left to say is that people on all sides need to do a better job in making this place tolerable for everyone else. If you're new, try to understand that you're joining a community that is already established. Try to approach things with an open mind and see what we're about. And if you're a veteran that has been around, try and give new people more of a chance; remember that all of us were newbies at one point or another. And last of all, if you're what people consider a "troll", just grow up already and make everyone's life (yours, above all) easier. Just **Contrary to popular belief (mostly among trolls), there's actually no "hive" on this site. I've been at odds with, and have had extended debates and disagreements with almost every prominent poster of this forum at one point or another, and the same can be said for most of them. Most people can agree on certain things while most people can also disagree on certain things. That doesn't mean anyone is part of a "hive" or a gang. It just means that you're smart if you agree with me and stupid if you don't :] Edited June 16, 2014 by TwistedLogic

Were you not familiar with the piece of performance art that was the official mlb Blue Jays message board?? There was literally hundreds of accounts with names that were variations of dog and puppy... this guy was kind of slow... harmless other than the volume of crap he posted... and the IQ of a retarded cocker spaniel (dogg was appropriate). Somehow the mods have prevented the same thing from appearing here. There was also a Zee -- I think I've heard it was the same guy but a different gig. More mean spirited and aggressive.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 To Twisted Logic... as I don't want to waste space quoting the War and Peace-style post:) Yeah I agree... this board has becomes pretty stagnant so I thought to go over to the other board some of the time for some fresh conversation but it's unbearable over there with trolling and terrible posters. So you're kind of damned if you do, damned if you don't. To me though, any "new" poster that "unknowingly" decides to present a lightning rod argument (usually anything anti-sabr for instance) is not a future asset to the board. They're obviously a dup account, either of a troll or maybe an active normal poster out for laughs. Honestly that's a good percentage of "newbies" too. I know I'm a pretty easy going guy with different ideas but it can be annoying to see someone that's an obvious dup account being an idiot. It's hard not to question out loud wtf is wrong with the person that they need to get their jollies like that. Idk... I don't pay attention to the main boards a ton so I guess I don't doubt that there's innocent people that get convicted without due process...lol Again, I usually just get irritated with the most blatant instances
kgm1 Verified Member Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Some of the best posters ever left the forums because of personal attacks . jaybooster who for years was voted most gentlemanly on the old board and spent 10 years there left because of a certain posters attacks. That can,t happen here unless we want to continue to run this board on donations only. Most women leave after the first day. Many ways to disagree with posts without attacking them.

After one of my first few posts I was accused of being an old poster and then later on was asked "Who the f*** are you" (both by Spanky). As if to suggest just because I don't have a high post count I'm not allowed to join in the discussion. Spanky has been one of the few people I cannot stand, with his "f*** you nob jockey" type posts and constant bickering. Is he entitled to something? Are we suppose to respect him because he has a high post count? Spanky's reply to me: P.S. Who the f*** are you, and what's with ball washing Mettalitard? Couple accounts asshat? I am accused of being a mettalitard? What is that?

I know the feeling I was also attacked the same way, it took too long but the mods finally did something about it, it was so bad the entire GDT's turned into the same 2-3 posters attacking anyone who they didn't like, agree with or accusing them of being someone else, then had the nerve to call others trolls and say they were destroying the GDT's. The mods acted and the last GDT was excellent......Best to ignore said posters. If the mods keep on top of it will no longer be an issue. I was also a lurker and the Jays being in first and not knowing anyone else who really follows baseball, decided to join, was trolled almost immediately, nearly deleted my account, but the mods gave me some hope. This is probably one of the worst internet forums I have been on for welcoming new people. Hope that changes.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 For the first year this board was mostly a close group with similar thoughts on how a forum should be run, that moved away from the old board. Now that the forum is pretty popular, new posters are coming in, and the original bunch are struggling to adjust (understandably in some cases). If you have a problem just report/ask them to stop, or even better, just put them on ignore. A few trolls have made it difficult for new users (who are not trolls), and it can be frustrating for old users too, when you have someone make 50 accounts.
