Yea nobody was expecting him to sign. Would have been nice if he at least acknowledged the draft pick though.

 

It would, but I can see his side of it as well. A kid that talented, used to being told how good he is, I don't blame him for not acknowledging that he was selected in Round 38 of 40.

urphy says he is undecided on whether he will sign with the Blue Jays or honor his commitment to the Black Bears.

 

“As of right now, I’ve gotta talk to the Blue Jays, and they have to handle the high round picks before they get to me,” he said. “I’ll see what they offer and talk with my family and decide from there. It’s gonna come down to money…I couldn’t really say I was leaning any way right now.”

Looks like the massive amount of scouts AA assembled is paying off now. All these kids really happy to become Blue Jays. Clearly they are forming great relationships. It's important because most of these kids know nothing about Canada.

I dunno, I think every kid is happy to be drafted by whatever team drafts him. You're just happy the wait is over if you're a later-round pick.

 

And most of these kids will never play in Canada anyway lol

Six clubs that made the best Draft impressions

The 2014 First-Year Player Draft concluded Saturday when the Cardinals made Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) right-hander Davis Ward the 1,215th and final selection. While it will be years before we know how well the teams and their choices fared, that doesn't stop us from formulating this list of the six clubs that made the best initial impressions:

 

1. Blue Jays.*Toronto is an obvious choice, because it had the advantage of the highest pair of picks at Nos. 9 and 11. They spent them on East Carolina right-hander Jeff Hoffman, who was in consideration for the top overall choice before he required Tommy John surgery, and Kennesaw State's Max Pentecost, the best true catcher in the Draft. Those two were a nice haul by themselves, and the Blue Jays didn't stop there.

 

In the second round, Toronto stole Sandalwood High (Jacksonville, Fla.) right-hander Sean Reid-Foley, making it the only team to get three of the first 20 players onMLBPipeline.com's Top 200 Draft Prospects list. The Blue Jays got two more promising prepsters in projectable Battlefield High (Haymarket, Va.) left-hander Nick Wells (third round) and Thorsby (Ala.) High catcher Matt Morgan (fourth). They also came out firing on Day 3, taking a slew of talented and possibly signable players, starting with Lemont (Ill.) High lefty Jake Latz and Collinsville (Ill.) High righty Tanner Houck in the 11th and 12th rounds.

The Blue Jays have announced the first signings of their 2014 draft class: prep catcher Matt Morgan (4th round) and Florida right-hander Justin Shafer (8th round). No terms were released, but the slot value (per Baseball America) for the two picks are $458K and $159.9K, respectively.

Yea maybe. It might be nice for him to know the team is good and he can contribute to it maybe as soon as next year but if our record was flipped I highly highly doubt it would stop anyone who is going to sign from signing.

Even if it is 1K. If you have the chance you should always give pro ball a shot for atleast a couple years.

 

Yeah, unless he's got a wife and kid already... That can be really hard on a family.

Not a lot. It scales with level, but I think they start out at <$1500/month or so (I'm basing that off my memory, so I could be off...) plus about $10/day per diem when they're on the road.

Ranges from about 1100 per month in the low minors, and AAA salaries start at 2150 per month when it's your first year there.

 

The only real money being made in the minors is when teams sign guys who have played in the majors before on minor league deals. they earn 6 figures generally, but it's low 6 figures. The up and coming kids make sweet f*** all and unless they have a huge signing bonus or a wealthy family background, they don't make enough to be considered above the poverty line.
