From the AA interview yesterday he said that the $ would be there for both Melky and Rasmus extensions. With Gose playing well (SSS, I know), and with the comps out there for a player like Rasmus, I predict that we'll let him walk as opposed to paying $13-16M AAV over 5-7years for a player who would really hit 7th or 8th in our lineup how its currently constructed. I do however, predict that Melky will be back. He's rebounded from his tumor plagued season last year, and looks like a totally different player in the field and at the plate. If you buy into the 'fit' and 'clubhouse vibe' thing, you could say he is a big part of the dominican/latin contingent that looks like theyre always having fun on the bench.

So...all that being said, LFer going into his age 30 season, previous PED usage, has shown that he can flat out hit, play at least an average Left Field...What would an extension cost? I'd say 4-Years 50Mil? If that were the extension who's leaving money on the table there?

Thoughts?

I'm not sure what market value for Melky would be. He's a tricky/unique situation.

Personally, i wouldn't go above 2 guaranteed years. 2 years 28 million with 2 team options at 15 million each. Not sure he would sign for that though. I don't see Melky as someone who ages very well.

Whats not to like about Melky's swing this year but I think we need to watch him the rest of the year. I think a lot depends on how this season plays out in terms of what we do.

Leery to pay him more than 12-13mm per 3 years with option for 4th, but I don't know if that would do it. If he likes the team and TOR it might. Those are intangibles we don't really know.

His range is in the bottom 3rd of LFers and despite running a lot better this year he is pretty poor defensively. Props for some clutch throws and catches this yr.

3 years with an option on the fourth and around 12-14M annually is what i would have him at however. I agree with AA that you should wait till the end of the year to make a proper evaluation. What i worry about with him is losing steam. But he is in good shape this year so i would not be surprised if he proved me wrong.

if his health fails or he loses a lot of value in LF, by that time we will be rid of Lind's contract and we can stick him at DH.

I dont think Melky signs for 3 years. Given his age, that puts him in no-man's land when its time for his next contract, at age 33. Its either 4+, so it counts as his 1 huge contract through his prime...or shorter than 3, so he can get further away from the PED issue, put up good numbers, and get back out there still in his prime.

He's the first productive LFer we've had in years, maybe even a decade. All I know is I don't want to see prospects platooning LF again.

my guess is AA would prefer 2 years to align with JB/EE's contracts...but imagine Melk will want atleast 3 if not 4 years...

Melk's made over $28M in his career thus far...imo, he'll want the security of as long as a contract as he can get though he'd likely accept lesser term for the right team/right situation...

depends on the market at the end of the day...if some top 10 big market team comes knocking & is a great city to live/play ball and they're offering the most years/most money, hard to say no to that...

my guess is it will take 3 yrs $36-$40M...

I think most are underestimating the chances he would resign here, but I am concerned we'll get outbid. An extension in the 38-42 range for 3yrs seems like a good offer to make to try to lock it down before he hits the open market.

Bad body, getting slower

For what he brings to the plate, he needs to be a good defender - he's not

Much, much prefer Rasmus in LF and Gose in CF

QO for Melky

Dude has the shortest hitting slumps and long periods of hitting everything thrown at him

Extend him over the all star break. Don't give him a chance to get to November and get greedy

Do it AA

I'd only re-sign him if its a "ninja" style discount. He's already a bad fielder, and he doesn't look like the type that will age well.

Well that's it. Gut feeling says AA might be able to tack on 2-3 years to his contract if he did it mid season. If he goes to free agency he might get offers for 5. Don't want that.

He will surely want 4 years minimum I think and will likely press for a 5 year deal in negotiations. I bet Bautista tries to use his influence on AA to keep Melky around. As much as I hate players who meddle in GM affairs, I'm really hoping AA brings back Melky and either trades Rasmus(highly doubtful) or gives him a QO and let's him walk.

I'm thinking he'll settle for something around 4/50

No way he goes for that. He would easily get 15M+ per year on the open market. I'm guessing 4/60 with two team options.

Same

I just hope Colby plays well enough to warrant a QO. For two reasons.

1. To help in playoff race

2. So we get something in return for him when he (presumably) is let go

It's a shame the Jays don't have a legit corner OF prospect because ideally both Rasmus and Melky would be Q.O.ed. An aging defensively limited left-fielder is really not a great place to put your money especially when you already have a DH and extending players whose value is closely tied to their CF play is rife with risk (see Vernon and countless other examples).

QO both Melky and Rasmus and happily take the draft picks in a nice 2015 draft class. Then proceed to sign Seth Smith and/or Chris Denorfia.

Melky's not much more than an average regular, guys. The defense and lack of power for a corner spot really hamper his value.

He's not going to get $15M+ on four-plus years IMO. Maybe 3/42 or 4/50.

I highly doubt that. I could maybe see him taking a discount to stay in Toronto, but of he leaves as a FA I'm sure someone will offer him 15 per.
