Nox Verified Member Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Would be shocked if an NFL team didn't thrive here.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 I'm sorry, I just really don't like the CFL. I would never go out of my way to bash it but I doubt I'll ever be a fan. The RC is a terrible venue for CFL football btw. I'm sure if Halifax had a team back when you were on the East Coast, you would be a die hard lol jks. To each's own. I'll watch both the NFL and CFL. I enjoy the CFL, it's entertaining to watch. I won't go out of my way to make it to every Argo game, but I'll go once or twice on a nice night in the summer and go to their playoff games in November. I went to see the Argos play in Montreal last summer, which was a great atmosphere. I agree games at the Rogers Centre suck - far way from the field and not the best atmosphere to watch a game in. I'd love to experience watching a game in Saskatchewan one summer - I heard going to a game there is awesome. Same with some other places in Western Canada.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 Are you kidding? A team would absolutely thrive here. The Bills don't belong to Toronto, that's why there's no loyalty. Yeah should have rephrased my statement - the Bills have not been a success here. Most of the Canadian NFL fans don't really have one team they follow - it's really spread out. You'll have bandwagon fans hopping on the Seahawks bandwagon, Patriots fans, Broncos fans, Giants fans, 49ers fans etc. There really isn't a team loyalty. Can an NFL team thrive here? Possibly. First a new NFL stadium would need to be built - they can't play at the Rogers Centre (lets be realistic). A new stadium likely needs to be build outside of the city like in Vaughn or Mississauga. Also, I'm sure it will be a huge fad in the first year, but if the team doesn't have success for an extended period of time, you're not going to get 80K at each game. Also, like said before even by NFL people, if an NFL team moves to Toronto, they need to make sure that they can co-exist with the CFL. They can co-exhist.
JugglingPitches Verified Member Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 Typical toronto attitude check required here! They have won more championships in the last twenty years then any pro team in all of toronto! Support your local Cfl teams! Pro? rofl
flafson Verified Member Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 Pro? rofl It is pro because they are getting paid for doing that. Besides, the NFL looks at the CFL as a serious league and they don't want to be in the way of the CFL, in their view, putting a team in Toronto is like having 2 NFL teams at the same space.

If that's their view then whoever said that is an idiot. The CFL is not a serious sports league and the Argos are not a serious football franchise. If the NFL came to JUST Toronto, forget the rest of Canada, the entire CFL would go down in a ball of flames because the entire country would prefer to watch real football in an actual pro sports league, not some rec league with $200,000 payrolls for an entire team whose fan base consists entirely of blue collar, middle aged men. The Argos can exist and you are free to cheer them to your hearts content, but they are interfering with an ACTUAL pro sports team, that being the Blue Jays, and their ability to play on a vastly superior playing surface than the one they are now. If the Argos are REALLY, ACTUALLY a legitimate professional team, then they should go get their own god damned stadium. But it will never happen because no one will pay prime dollars to watch an amateur team play in an amateur league.
JugglingPitches Verified Member Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 Also the reason the Bills games don't do well in Toronto is because they charge double the ticket price and we can just as easily drive across the border and go watch them in Buffalo. Then again, I'm a Steelers fan, so...

Not sure why you think Argos are in the way of anything, SkyDome was built as a multipurpose venue not a baseball only. On top of that, if they really wanted they could easily have grass and keep the Argos.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 At least we can all agree that the CFL sucks.
flafson Verified Member Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 At least we can all agree that the CFL sucks. No... CFL is probably the sport that i enjoy watching the most. It's a lot more entertaining than baseball and a lot quicker than NFL. If CFL could switch places with NFL that would be ideal but i don't see that happening anytime soon...

It's not about if it can support the argos or not, it's that Rogers owns it and they want their ball team to have their own grass field and bring in fans to make real money for them. Leasing it out and accommodating 8 games to the argos is a waste of their time & money since they want to reconfigure the stadium for primarily baseball.

flafson Verified Member Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 hahahahaha good luck hoping for that to happen I'm not really hoping for that, just saying that would be ideal. The CFL as a game is more enjoyable to watch than the NFL.

flafson Verified Member Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 Maybe you should join a CFL forum. If they exist. They do exist and i'm also there
flafson Verified Member Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 I'm also among the few that enjoy the CFL in the Toronto area Not really few though, their ratings are pretty good. The last number of games had around 1.5 million viewers. In comparison, the Jays game against the A's on Sunday had about 660k viewers.

I would hope a pro team winning their division in a shortened 18 game season would draw a larger TV audience than a team playing a 162 saturated one... Doesn't mean their fan base is larger just that each game of football is vastly more important than baseball.

Yea i'm not really comparing as it's fairly different on quite a few levels but just saying that 1.5 million viewers to a CFL team that had another GTA team and this year there will be another Ontario team is pretty significant. Add to that the fact that Blue Jays is Canada's team and you see that quite a few people like the Argos and the CFL.
guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 i'm surprised this thread hasn't converted into a full on cfl vs nfl debate, i'm proud of yall, somewhat....

guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 I don't watch the CFL. I'm a Colts fan and regardless if Toronto gets a team or not I will always be a Colts fan. With that being said I hope the CFL does well. I just don't want them getting in the way of the Blue Jays getting grass. They are being kicked out regardless. But they need to play somewhere else. University of Toronto be fine. they already practice on my school campus (UFT mississauga) how big is the downtown campus field anyway
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 they already practice on my school campus (UFT mississauga) how big is the downtown campus field anyway They could probably just play at some random highschool np
flafson Verified Member Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 they already practice on my school campus (UFT mississauga) how big is the downtown campus field anyway They actually switched, they're not playing there anymore. Now they are practicing in York.

I like watching ground and pound teams like San Fran and Seattle. 3 down football would really neuter those kind of offenses.
AngryBird Verified Member Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 Could care less, CFL is Arena Football on a field. If the Argos move no one would miss them. Dirt cheap tickets, very limited home dates a year and they can barely get 22,000 a game to see them. If the Jays, Leafs and Raptors only had 12 home games a year you would be able to fill the Rogers Centre in two seconds.

I see your point, my favorite team is the Cardinals and they too build around defense. Having said that, it really bugs me that you can sometime spend a whole quarter of the game on 1 drive, that is insane.
