IBTrini Verified Member Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 Doesn't seem like people don't "get" it - it just doesn't work well. At all. Apparently it works for some people but for me, I agree that it does not work well.

IBTrini Verified Member Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 Hmm, I don't mind the dry cleaning one. I guess I don't find the guy to be a 'smug jerk'. The guy just talked about knowing all the players, so I don't find it smug. I do agree that the Martin Short one is unbearable. I agree with you on both counts. Also, the dry cleaning one reminds me of actual situations where people keep doing the name-dropping thing while at the same time I can appreciated how technology can keep you in touch with your interest (sport etc). Maybe I am reading too much into ads.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 Here's an entire complication of those commercials: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CigWnsQc-MA That one eating the peanuts is AA haha

eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 Pound for Pound worst ads on TV right now: 1. Dickey/Lawrie WestJet ads 2. That Apple commercial with the Pixies song "Gigantic" (I want to destroy my TV when it coems on) 3. Mio Sport Water or whatever it's called. I've never actually seen anyone IRL use this product. Please stop.

Please stop. The ones I hate are the 5 gum commercials. They come up with some elaborate psy-techno ******** about how the taste of this gum is going to blow your senses away...annnnd it's like any other gum. Not sure why people still chew gum these days. Not only is it terrible for your teeth but there are much better breath-cleansers out there like Listerine mint strips.

Please stop. Very much agree with #2. My most hated ad is the Moosehead one where a group of four people hike up a mountain with a giant cooler and inside the cooler there are FOUR BEERS that they crack open when they reach the top. That's right - one beer each - gonna be a wild night. When on earth would you go hiking with a massive cooler with only one beer each in it.

pickoff22 Verified Member Posted May 26, 2014 Author Posted May 26, 2014 The 2011 ad for the home opener was killer. The one with the "I'm coming home" song. Got me so fired up.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 I haven't watched it yet but here's Dickey's interview on endorsements http://www.thestar.com/business/sportonomics/2014/05/22/sportonomics_the_business_of_r_a_dickey.html
Virgil_Hiltz Verified Member Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 Well all things considered, the Dickey commercial is no where as annoying as the political commercials knowing the leaders are flat out lying to us!
JFD Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 seemed like it to me. People asking why he is mute... the joke would be ineffective if he was talking. it's ineffective when he isn't talking. it's just all around stupid and kills brain cells.

closetjaysfan Verified Member Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 Blue Jays commercials have always been bad, they are just capitalizing on tradition. Catch the taste anyone? I have yet to figure out what Alomar and a catchers mitt have in common
Brenner Verified Member Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 What ads? I don't think see any with MLB.tv
xposbrad Verified Member Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 It's funny, I was thinking the same thing. As bad and corny as they are, almost unbelievable that a marketing agency was paid a ton of money to come up with them, it has hundreds of people talking about them on a baseball forum. So, maybe they are that cheesy on purpose, to get people talking about it? Btw - I used to prefer WJ but now I try to fly only Air Transat. Better food, a lot of nice new planes, better entertainment systems. AC, my past few flights I've had really old planes. I wish AT flew to more destinations, but for Europe/sun destinations I will only use them now.
Art Vandelay Verified Member Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 It actually never occurred to me that the one where Dickey is shaking off the woman at the counter is supposed to be like him shaking off a catcher. Maybe because it seems like she gave him five different options, which seems like it would be a bit excessive for a catcher to be giving his pitcher. Or maybe because she says "that's all you had to say!", which shifts the punchline back to her. Or it could be that he was set up in the previous ad as being a bit of a tough guy, so I just interpreted the ad to be him having high standards. That Dickey has zero charisma also doesn't really help. Either way, I'm not sure the ad was all that well executed. The ad with him throwing the knuckleball is also poorly executed. It's not like he was throwing a fast ball, where a non ballplayer might be afraid to catch it out of fear of hurting themselves. He's throwing a knuckleball. The pitch is tricky to catch, but you don't need a lot of padding to catch it. It doesn't really lend itself to such an ad, which is probably why they cut it before the guy caught it (or not). The Lawrie ad is just kind of half hearted. Setting it in the airport was also a strange choice. The other two ads at least sort of work because the location makes sense in the context of the ad (although, why Dickey would be wearing full Jays gear while trying to board a plane is another question). Why is Brett Lawrie getting a tattoo at the airport?
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 I also couldn't find the Frank Thomas pillow fight one because of the stupid regulatory board that banned it.. CHYULD ABOOS!!!!1 cf
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 Best Commercial of All Time #LoveThisTeam I really have to question why no one involved in the making of that cringed while watching it. Just embarrassing, even if they would have been a good team.
