Convo Verified Member Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 It's certainly been a fun ride. The best part is it hasn't looked, for the most part, like "fluky" baseball (i.e. the 11 game winning streak last year).
Candy Maldonado Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Would be even better with Santana.
43211234 Verified Member Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 (edited) Need another starter. I see Shark as a borderline #2, instead of a borderline ace. The cost to acquire him is not worth it imo. Rather go after McCarthy or someone else. Edited May 24, 2014 by 43211234
Convo Verified Member Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Would be even better with Santana. Why even bring this up? You can't really blame AA for what transpired there, he certainly made an honest effort of it.
43211234 Verified Member Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Would be even better with Santana. Yeah, it really is quite pathetic that he or Ubaldo is not in a Blue Jays uniform.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 It is a HUGE deal that Dickey can have a shut down game like this against a good offense. HUGE. If he can be a legit #2 caliber guy, and if any of Stroman/Nolin/Hendriks can be good as well, we're in good shape.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Going for the sweep tomorrow. B2B sweeps would be electrifying.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Going for the sweep tomorrow. B2B sweeps would be electrifying. Any maybe just maybe maybe maybe kill Tampa soon too??
Chappy Community Moderator Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Any maybe just maybe maybe maybe kill Tampa soon too?? Would be nice. We won't see Price which is great and we trot out Hutch, Buehrle and Hendriks. 2/3 would be great.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 What was "fluky" about the 11-game winning streak last year (at the time), as compared to this tear? this one moved them up in the standings.
BarkatToronto Verified Member Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Going for the sweep tomorrow. B2B sweeps would be electrifying. Tomorrow seems the most difficult game of the series given Happ. I hope Gibby keeps the leash short as the bull pen is pretty rested now
TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 They are pretty good. But I hope this team doesn't wait for things to get bad before adding the starter they really freaking need. The sooner the better. I really agree with this. Especially since they are going to have a huge decision to make on whether or not to shut down Hutch. They are one of the most conservative orgs in this regard and considering the red flag on innings increased for pitchers under 25 is 30 innings increased. I can see them already being concerned.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 stop complaining about Santana. We were supposed to sign him but the freak injury ruined everything. Not sure why some want Ubaldo - did you see what he did today?
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 The rotation cannot sustain this. 2/5 of our rotation are fringe replacement level players. Hendriks might surprise but Happ has been so lucky. They clearly need to make a move to get another starter. Why not someone like Edwin Jackson? He has been much better than his numbers indicate. Cubs might want to just dump his salary (reasonable 2/22 remaining). If we were willing to give Santana 14M a year we should be willing to give Jackson 11M a year.
AngryBird Verified Member Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 We had a great run like this last June, won 11 straight games and brought us up to 38-36 and then we went back down to earth after that. Let's not get ahead of ourselves here.

Is Jackson likely to be better than Redmond or Stroman? I'm not sure.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Is Jackson likely to be better than Redmond or Stroman? I'm not sure. Yes, lol.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Yes, lol. You don't think either could put up EJax's 4 career FIP? I'll admit I was somewhat in favour of signing him as a FA when he was available 1.5 years ago when we desperately needed guys who could give innings. But things have changed. And I'm not sure he's better than those two.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Is Jackson likely to be better than Redmond or Stroman? I'm not sure. Durable guy who can probably almost guarantee you 2.5+ WAR. Cubs might even eat some money because his ERA has been s*** this year. Redmond is a gascan. I don't expect him to be around that much longer.

He's figured something out the last few years. Solid pitcher.

I just looked and yeah, he has somehow gotten better the last few years. Still, I hate trading for guys we could have signed as free agents. It's depressing. LOL
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Also, Redmond does worry me And Stroman? Who knows...

Let's not get ahead of ourselves here. i agree lets not get ahead of ourselves, but to be frank last year pitching staff during that streak was JOing and it was a surprise to everyone. Everybody here knows that, if we get a legit 2nd starter, we have the team to grab the AL east division. Plus after last year's streak, we were still last in division, so there some optimism to hold for this year THIS COULD BE OUR YEAR!!!!
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 The only way I'm taking Jackson if Cubs eat salary. I would rather look at Burnett in that situation. But the focus should be on Shark or Lee. Do you honestly think they'd take on Cliff Lee's salary? 25M next year, with at least a 12.5M buyout the year after (27.5M vesting option). ..And the Cubs' demands for Shark have been crazy. Please be realistic.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Well, it did that ... but that doesn't speak to his comment that the 11-game win streak last year resulted from "fluky" baseball. They outscored the opposition 70-27 during that streak. Not sure what was "fluky" about it, beyond the fact that the quality of performance didn't last, obviously ... but we're talking about when it was happening. This could end up being "fluky" baseball in retrospect, as well. And, yet, they could still perform fairly poorly (or moderately) and still win the division with the way the rest of the competition is performing. I still think that at least 2 of the division rivals will kick into gear in short order ... but right now, there's a whole lot of suck in the AL East. You know I was agreeing with you right?
Convo Verified Member Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 Because it almost happened. Why not bring it up? Never said I blame AA. Because you're derailing a positive thread with crap that doesn't matter anymore.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 This team is good when they are healthy. I don't want to jinx or anything but the injuries will start eventually. We've had lots of guys hurt but we have avoided major injuries at the same time. Hopefully they can stay relatively healthy because this is really fun to watch!
