BarkatToronto Verified Member Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 Thus ends one of the worst trades in franchise history. Jays traded manager john farrell and young prospect Yan Gomes for Esmil Rodgers
Smedley Butler Verified Member Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 Ehhh, we only gave up what would be our current starting C and 2B for the guy, no harm no foul.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 Anybody know if it is irrevocable waivers or if he has just been optioned to AAA and we can still pull him back if claimed?
kgm1 Verified Member Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 Thus ends one of the worst trades in franchise history. Jays traded manager john farrell and young prospect Yan Gomes for Esmil Rodgers Not even close! Michael Young Trade, Jeff Kent trade ?
TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 Not even close! Michael Young Trade, Jeff Kent trade ? Gomes is already 1/5th of his way to Young's career WAR. Really could end up being mentioned if Gomes has 5 seasons like he's been going.
BlueJaysGirl Verified Member Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 His performance forced their hand. If he had pitched well in Boston, he would have stayed. Good for GM_AA to cut our losses. I am 99% sure he is plucked by another team. Oh well. We have a lot of young guys just begging for a promotion. Have you noticed that our team, roster management wise, has steadily improved since day 1? Injuries to Izturis and Morrow have helped, simply by their deletion from the roster, but some of the dead wood is starting to be cut away, Stroman's had a taste and in two starts in AAA will be ready for start for the Jays, etc. I am really happy with how they have managed things. Liam's start tonight will be very interesting. If he sucks, Stroman's up in 10 days. Book it.

I hate the deal as much as the next guy but i doubt even the Cleveland scouts saw Gomes as a starting Catcher. Blame this one on the toronto scouts and player development people who always had him as a part timer behind the dish.

BlueJaysGirl Verified Member Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 So now, in terms of roster management when Colby comes of the DL, will it be Gose or Pillar kept as 4th outfielder? For me Gose > Pillar atm.

For me Gose > Pillar atm. It would likely be Pillar that stays, platoons and all... Melky is a switch hitter, and nobody's displacing Bautista, so Gose really wouldn't have playing time.

HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 Pillar has no use. He can't hit well in the bigs and takes horrible swings. At least Gose has great D and speed, which is more important as a platoon/4th outfielder.

True as it is, he has shown he is able to adjust given some time as he has done throughout his minor league career.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 Agreed, Gose would see lots of playing time as a 4th outfielder/late inning sub Sending him down after how well he's been playing, is a huge kick in the ass for our potential starter next year. Especially for Pillar who will never be an important player.

He'd get 0 at bats if he stayed up with the roster as is.

Melky is a switch hitter, and nobody's displacing Bautista, so Gose really wouldn't have playing time. I don't know, I see Gose as a good 2014 Rajai Davis with better defense. Great pinch runner, great defensive replacement late in game, etc. Bautista and Melky have not taken a lot of days off. They'll need breaks if we want them firing on all cylinders for the entire season, especially given their injury history. Plus, Rasmus appears poised to be on the DL longer than 15 days. Reports aren't great. IMO, Gose is one of those guys that will go to the next level in the bigs. He'll be stunted with more AAA playing time. Pillar could use another season. Again, just my opinions.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 (edited) Pillar has no use. He can't hit well in the bigs and takes horrible swings. At least Gose has great D and speed, which is more important as a platoon/4th outfielder. Who's he platooning with? With that said Gose should be up for the rest of the season. Maybe we can stop going with a dozen catchers and keep both. Rasmus, Lind, Francisco and Gose are all virtually unplayable against LHP. So trade Rasmus right? I really wish the perception on that move wasn't so bad (and I still have no clue what Rasmus' value is) Edited May 23, 2014 by TheHurl
