A year ago I would have said Delabar but I don't trust him right now either

Delabar has trouble finding the plate too. I don't know where the notion of a closer having to throw 95mph came from but I'd much rather have someone who has great control like Cecil or Janssen in there.

Kipnis' AB was godly, fell behind and took some really tough pitches, 8/10 guys swing at that on a regular basis.

Yep. But when he's been that wild to 2-3 guys in front of you, you take more

Needs to get the FB in there for strikes

It's lack of fastball command, to be more specific, that's hurting Santos right now. His fastball is also pretty straight so it's hittable and he's been topping out at 93 MPH the last couple of outings.

He's the closer though, so there isn't much you can do.

I agree, I'm not letting him off the hook, but have to give credit where credit is due.

Santos was pretty filthy tonight.

Agreed. No denying he was crap last night, but to tonight, you've gotta give credit to Kipnis and Santana. Kipnis laid off some tough sliders and Santana not only laid off a couple of tough sliders, but also fouled off 2 or 3 that would've been called strike 3.

Plus, nothing more exciting that a tense 9th-inning situation like that, certainly not for the faint of heart.

Are you a sadist?

There was nothing pleasurable about that 9th inning at all.

There are tons of tense, 9th inning situations in baseball, it's part of the game. Cecil put 2 guys on in the 7th and got out of it. It's part of the game.

To answer your question, maybe I am, not really sure.

The double wasn't Santos' fault. Santos is still our best reliever IMO.

It wasn't too well hit. Just carried.

How many good seasons has Santos actually had?

His 2011 was very impressive but what has he done since then?

He's thrown THIRTY SIX innings for us. Janssen has been nails for years. Yes he doesn't K as many guys as Sergio but I would take Janssen (assuming both are healthy) 10/10 times over Santos.

Substance over style any day of the week.

Santos has 66 and 67 xFIP- last two seasons he's pitched. Janssen's best is 72 and Janssen relies on getting strike calls on pitches that aren't strikes.

I'm aware that the advanced stats favour Santos.

But how the heck can you stand behind those stats when Santos almost never actually plays baseball?

Janssen has thrown 120 innings over the last 2 years while Santos has thrown 30!

Is that people keep saying Dogg to me?

Yes

Guy is a nut job. His longest running account was called MohYou and had a bizarre avatar. Hence our suspicion that you were he.

The only good thing about Dogg is that he doesn't usually hide the fact that it's him. He showed up AGAIN the other night when the board crashed, posting in the chat box. King, you still have the pic?

This avatar is from the movie chopper, check it out, great aussie flick

You might want to change your name though. You DO NOT want to be mistaken for the nutcase that is "Dogg"

Santos is a stud. One night of horribleness does not make a career.

SSS but he's had 8 appearances this season and only 2 of them have been clean. It's undeniable how shaky he's been.

No doubt fastball is a big key to his success. There's really not much of a better choice. Delabar's been throwing 91-92 lately and has been wild. I think they want Cecil available for tough LHH. We'll see what happens.

Well he won't be available today, that's for sure. Delabar and Loup will be fine for today, assuming Buehrle goes 7 innings.

You'd think but in the interview last night he said he's ready to save tomorrow too. But yea, no way Gibby is going to do it.

Big assumption on Buehrle. I think Indians could chase him early, we'll see what happens. If they split the next 2, I'd be satisfied with the road trip despite the series loss in Minny.

The good thing is that Loup is also a stud. I can't think of another AL pen with 2 lefties as tough as Cecil and Loup.

Yeah, no doubt, I was just commenting on other choices as closer instead of Santos. Cecil is one of those, but I think Gibby likes to have both lefties for the middle and late innings. I actually thought Gibbons would bring in Loup when he went to visit Santos at the mound last night. He was probably not available.
