jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 The challenge today during the Detroit game felt like it almost hit 5 minutes, with both the slow walk, Ausmus asking the ump how the wife and children are and then setting up to go watch the replay.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Am I wrong in thinking that there's already a rule limiting the amount of times a manager can come on to the field without making a pitching change? yes you're wrong, but only because you need clarification. There's a rule that says the second time the manager goes to the mound to visit the pitcher in an inning, he has to make a change. It's not about how many times he just comes on the field itself.
The_DH Verified Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Everyone knows what a close call is, they should just have someone in the box of each game checking EVERY close call. There is generally plenty time between the end of one play and the start of the next AB to figure out if a call is correct (things like the Melky play at 1B that was CLEARLY an out). Give the head ump an earpiece to hold the next AB if there is a call that requires additional review (like Colby's HR). Keep the managers out of it. They are the problem, not the system. I like the approach - it tries to get the right call and keeps game flow.
theblujay Verified Member Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 I'd just ban them from leaving the dugout unless it's a challenge. You don't see coaches discussing close calls with officials in hockey or basketball. It's ridiculous that these guys are going out there 5-10 times a game with pitching changes. I'm not sure if you watch basketball, but coaches do this constantly
