Cito got canned because the team is racist and he put a hex on the club.

If only Cito got canned in 1994, Carter would have been gone a long time ago and we probably would have kept Olerud.

Semi-serious answer: Duane Ward went down. As soon as he went out, the Jays bullpen went from the best in the league (and lights-out in the Henke-Ward days) to a serious pile of s*** made up of often-injured also-rans and Tony Castillo.

The players strike.

That was huge and affected attendance. Labatts was also taken over and became hostile to baseball.

Pat Gillick resigned.

If only he had stayed.

Good answer, except that your name is too close to whackoff93 for me to take you seriously.

New here, didn't realize there was a whackoff93...LOL. Is he a dick?

I always trusted Pat Gillick. He didnt draft well at first but he could spot a diamond in the rough and he got so many as throw ins.

I thought that cursed Montreal more than anyone? Best team in the NL IIRC

Welcome aboard the awesome forum!

LOL Not sure if there's intentionally a pun there or not.... regardless no there isn't a wackoff93 although it sounds funny as f***, someone should use that name

Listen here dick, it's time for you to show some damn respect to your elders.

Then you're like 7/8 years older than me. Feel old yet? ;)

Yes. I've been raving about this for decades.

Does anyone know?

I am only 25 so I was very young at that time.

Pat Gillick ended his career 94...

94 Labatt was in negotiations to sell to Interbrew. the deal was done 1995. Jays went from highest paid team to one of the least. the new ownership thought it could still make money selling out the RC while putting out an inferior product. that spiraled out of control in the late 90s as people stopped going because the team sucked.

Peter Hardy left in 1989. He was baseball executive of the 80s and was the guy who built it.

Pat Gillick was also an important architect.

Paul Beeston was a 2-bit accountant and Cito Gaston was a hitting coach, they both lucked into their positions in 89.

Gillick became upset at a few things. After 91 he wanted Gaston fired for playoff failures and perhaps development of some players.

Beeston said no. One has to think Pat Gillick didn't like being bossed around by a slimy accountant.

Gillick stuck around (obviously still had a great base and big time payroll permission) but left after 94.

Post-94 is all Beeston and Gaston.

Sometimes I think there was a hex placed on them.

But seriously, a few things happened around there. The strike (which probably hurt Montreal more than us, but people use it as a convenient excuse for why they stopped following the Jays); Pat Gillick leaving and his replacement Gord Ash not being good at anything except imitating Dr. Evil; and Labatts selling the team to Interbrew, a Belgian brewing company that knew jackshit about baseball and didn't care.

Don't forget Godfrey and JPR. Not everything that has went wrong in the past 20 years can be blamed on 2 men. Gord Ash showed some promise but then really screwed it up towards the end of his reign of mediocrity

Joe Carter hit a game winning home run and made the final play at first base. He needs to be sacrificed on the field before opening night on a full moon.

Shouldn't be hard to catch. Apparently he has joint pain that only Webber Naturals can fix.
