pickoff22 Verified Member Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Hard to believe this is true, but Jeff Blair claims the Jays made the same offer to Burnett as the Phillies: "This is an organization that has already struck out with A.J. Burnett – although they matched the Philadelphia Phillies offer – and fellow free agent Ubaldo Jimenez" Now if true that seems quite shocking, especially if it included the same team and player options. Even more shocking is that Blair throws this in without going into any detail and that it hasn't been reported anywhere else. Seems very suspect. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/baseball/blair-despite-his-warts-jays-need-innings-eater-like-santana/article17388689/

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 According to people more credible than Jeff Blair that's a lie Edit: Of course if he means that the Jays offered a contract Why don't you post a link to these credible people who indicate it's a lie. I'm not saying that blair isn't perhaps mistaken on the matter, but I don't see why he would lie about this or why lying would benefit him.

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 ^ As I mentioned in my Edit, if Blair said that the Jays offered him a contract that seems incorrect according to Buster Onley The article mentioned they made an offer to burnett and that they struck out with Jimenez...not that they made an offer to jimenez. "This is an organization that has already struck out with A.J. Burnett – although they matched the Philadelphia Phillies offer – and fellow free agent Ubaldo Jimenez."

"This is an organization that has already struck out with A.J. Burnett – although they matched the Philadelphia Phillies offer – and fellow free agent Ubaldo Jimenez." Hence my edit: "Edit: Of course if he means that the Jays offered a contract" I thought that he was saying that they offered a contract to AJ AND Jimenez hence why they 'struck out'
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 I believe this about as much as I believe they offered Sanchez 5/75 last year. They didn't offer 5/75 million! read Shi's book! It's pretty insightful.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Isn't that where the rumour came from? I guess not. Because in the book they make it clear they never made an offer.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 It's quite possible they had verbal exchanges in which they suggested they would give him that, but never made a formal written offer.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 It's quite possible they had verbal exchanges in which they suggested they would give him that, but never made a formal written offer. The book states they aggressively pursued him early. Talked about multiple dinners, ect. According to the book AA said he wanted to get a deal done early and said they were willing to go 5 years but never mentioned a number. They internally valued him at 5 and 75 million. Once the Agent said they were looking for 8ish years and needed to talk to other teams....AA moved on. It's pretty clear he didn't want to come to Toronto.

They reportedly dined Sanchez and his wife in TO and so forth. Everyone is pretty cynical and will believe what they want to. At the end of the day, Rogers owns the franchise and as of today, they're happy with AA's work, if they weren't he'd be working in a Greek restaurant.

I was meaning more in general with some of the rumors we've heard recently as opposed to Sanchez specifically. It's possible both sides are correct.
fireballW Verified Member Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Said it when he became available and will say it again. Anybody who think AJ would return to Toronto without being massively overpaid is kidding themselves. The most famous game of the last three years is because of just how badly our fans shiat on AJ Burnett upon his return. No way he was coming here for anywhere near equal value despite him saying all the right things. Just common sense.

This is a huge misunderstanding of player's mercenary attitudes. It was dumb for you to say it then and it's dumb for you to say it now.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Cool. Continue thinking money is the only thing that matters to players at the end of their careers. No not cool. He cared about where he played. He cared about being close to home. He didn't care about what fans think beause that's just dumb. Players are not idiots. By the end of their career, they know that's just part of the game. Fans are fickle and vindicative. They are like that everywhere. I'm sorry but I just couldn't let you drudge up this foolishness whithout letting it go unchallenged.

McCown: Ti Canis Greek: Kala McCown: So about that HBO thing-- Greek: Look, I know a lot of people have been asking about this lately, and I'd just like to say that most of what's out there and what's getting written, it's all probably false. As for the story, well, is HBO quality television? I mean I don't think anyone is arguing that, they've got some great shows, a lot of upside, and you know, we considered it, that goes without saying, but at the end of the day, I feel like we just don't match up. The dollars and the term just don't measure up to our valuation of what we think the channel is worth. Does it mean that the dollars aren't there? I wouldn't go as far to say that, I mean the resources are there, and have always been there when we've asked, but we just don't think HBO fits with what we're trying to do right now. We got a great ownership who have always been open to new ideas, but like I said, sometimes it's just not the right fit. Does that mean we won't consider it in the future? We're always open to reconsidering our options and something could definitely be done in the future if the price or the talent matches up better with our valuation, but until then, if I want to watch Game of Thrones, I'll just torrentlol#despaired.
