ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 I think the truth will come out now . If AA does not get Santana then he just has no money . Personally I don't like Santana in these small AL east Ball Parks but he is better than Happ . He could get Santana and promise his bosses that he'll move salary to compensate, i.e. Happ + Santos/Janssen/Cecil. I don't think many like Santana, but on a 1-year deal, the benefits outweigh the risks. I also see a long term benefit in that it would allow Stroman, Nolin and possibly Hutchison more development time at AAA.
Anemic0ffense Verified Member Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 I say 1.Mariners 2.Yankees 3.Orioles In that order. 0 chance AA signed him.
flafson Verified Member Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 Right, but 14m, plus a loss of a 2nd rounder, for a possible 2 more wins, so we go from likely 78 to maybe 80 wins and still not make the playoffs? He's been a bit inconsistent and gives up a lot of hrs. It probably makes more sense to get a better slot for a draft pick then for a meaningless extra win or so, because at the end of the year, it still is a non playoff team even with him. Truth is, we need more pitchers who can eat innings, only 2/5 of our rotation can give us that right now.
BlueJaysGirl Verified Member Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 Here's a story from Rosenthal on Santana... http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/rosenthal-ervin-santana-now-looking-for-one-year-deal-wants-to-sign-as-soon-as-possible-030714 Santana fired his agent recently, right? if not, he'd better. Horrible.
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 If the M's outbid Toronto, hard to really blame AA. Even on a 1 year deal there's a price where it starts to not make sense. If you go much higher than 14M, then you start paying for more production than you're likely to get. He's probably a 2 win pitcher. That's even money at 15M. Factoring in the draft pick, and the market price for one year of Ervin is probably closer to $10M or $8M. If Jack Z wants to drop 14M+ a draft pick for a league average starter, f*** it. Let him.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 1st option to replace Happ at #5 although if they keep Rogers/Redmond as the long reliever/6th starter they may give one of them a shot, or even McGowan. I'm certainly all for giving Hutchison a month or more at AAA. my question is - why hutch as 1st call up over all the others - on what basis?
BallsDeep Verified Member Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 Not going to get my hopes up. Pretty clear ownership has kept AA's hands tied. Ervin is no saviour either.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 Bob Dutton @TNT_Mariners 57s No #Mariners. RT@jonheymancbs Ervin Santana in talks with blue jays, orioles and 1 nl team. deal should come http://soon.cbsprt.co/1h119y0

flafson Verified Member Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 If you assume that previous tweet said only AL and another said no Orioles, then it must be us. What are the chances?
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 If you assume that previous tweet said only AL and another said no Orioles, then it must be us. What are the chances? 30% chance we get him?

Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 What's he going to sign for 1/11?
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 What's he going to sign for 1/11? Reported to be 1/14 with an AL team.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 my question is - why hutch as 1st call up over all the others - on what basis? Assuming he continues to outperform them in ST although there's a decent chance he makes the team. My preference is for him to spend more time at AAA.
flafson Verified Member Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 Those retweeting are so annoying, everyone just retweets the same thing.
BlueJaysGirl Verified Member Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 What's he going to sign for 1/11? Was the QO $14.1M? I say he'd be happy signing for $14.2 - that way he doesn't have any regrets turning down the QO.

bzapple Verified Member Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 I don't know if I can handle getting one upped by the Orioles again.
