John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 I'm really starting to think that Alex has lost all of his spending privileges. I actually believe AA when he says the money is there if he asks for it, but clearly he is very rarely asking for it.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 What could be a big factor in all of this that no one is recognizing is the 2014 Pitching Free Agent Class HOMER BAILEY MAX SCHERZER JON LESTER JUSTIN MASTERSON JAMES SHIELDS All 5 of those names are substantially better pitchers then both Jimenez and Santana. If AA's thinking is lets see what we have in our kids in 2014 and if they falter go big in the deeper FA class...could you really blame him? Im pissed to lose out on Jimenez aswell..That is an affordable contract...But perhaps Year 2 of this 5 Year championship window will be the most important in seeing what the future beholds. Bailey is reportedly close to signing an extension. A couple of the other guys could also sign extensions, who knows. As far as taking the wait and see approach for 2014, I'm fine with that, but they look pretty stupid because that's what they should've done last off season instead of overpaying in both $ and 'spects. Had they taken that approach last year, they've have a good core with upper-minors prospects almost ready. Also, I thought it was a 3-year window? At this point, it's looking like a 1-year broken window.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 That's what I'm afraid of now that nobody wants it or expecting it might happen. Apparently hes very good friends with Bautista as well. Maybe AA does make a move, but at this point with pitchers already reporting to camp, I think it's more realistic to expect nothing to happen. Jimenez at 4/48 is an absolute steal. If he wasn't willing to beat that then he wasn't really involved in the first place.
The_DH Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 How does that make the FO sloppy? lol They posted mistaken information, then screwed up the correction. That's sloppy.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Also, I thought it was a 3-year window? At this point, it's looking like a 1-year broken window. AA is still waiting for the price to come down on the f***ing window.
Santos Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Im trying to say that the kids getting the opportunity to pitch this season will reveal if they are good enough to pitch in a competitive rotation or if we need to go out in 2015 and spend some serious cash on pitching.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Or maybe it was going to take a lot more to get it done. If I'm a free agent I think I would rather sign with Baltmore if I'm getting the same money. That's why I said "if he wasn't willing to beat that", not match that.

Then why would we give up half the farm for old timers?
admin Site Manager Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 I cannot wait to see AA's response to the media when he fails to sign Jimi and Santana. Why wait? "We made an offer to a couple pitchers that we believed were fair and worth their value, but they went elsewhere."

I respect your attempts to polish this turd, but in reality, AA is simply a joke of a GM with absolutely no plan and no idea what he's doing.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Then why would we give up half the farm for old timers? Because AA mixed up the Jays with his yearly fantasy team.
Santos Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Then why would we give up half the farm for old timers? They clearly expected to be better...Everyone in baseball expected the 2013 team to be much better. They took a chance and it hasnt paid off yet. Time to reassess your options and see what you got.

How do you called it a "championship window" and at the same time endorse experimenting?????

Im pissed off...Completely shocked with tonight's news. I always believed Ubaldo was the one guy we would for sure get in the end. Stunned it didnt happen. If i saw AA on the street right now I'd honestly smack him upside the head. Im trying to figure out what in the f***ing world prevented him from signing this guy...

But he wasn't replaced therefore there can't be an expectation to be better.

Either he should have made the necessary moves this winter to contend or he should have traded off the older players and try to restock the farm for another run in 2015/2016.
Santos Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 How do you called it a "championship window" and at the same time endorse experimenting????? Beeston and AA referred to the next 5 years starting in 2013 as their championship window...im using their words here

All im saying is perhaps it does (big emphasis on PERHAPS) make sense to pass on Ubaldo and Santana and see if a guy like Stroman could right away jump into a major league rotation and contribute like you see sooo many other young pitchers do across baseball...Wacha, Fernandez, Cingrani, Archer to name a few from last year alone

If we don't make them next year, we'll make them to year after that!" Edit: and it was a "3-year competitive window" when they changed plans and went "all-in", let's not shift the goalposts now just because their supposed window closed after about 2 months.

There's a reasonable chance that 3 spots will need to be filled with kids + Happ, which is the problem.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 By reassess im only referring to their rotation needs Still maintain the belief that the offense and bullpen can be top 10 units in all of baseball They were top 10 last year in both pen and offense. They need better than bottom 5 rotation or being top 10 again in the pen and offense won't mean jack.
