awsomest Verified Member Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 Another observation of this pitching staff - despite having 4 solid SP options that pitched 150+ IP and Litsch coming out of nowhere, how many innings were wasted on junk pitchers - puts it into perspective over people who complain about Ortiz, Laffey, Redmond et al last year. This has been an organization-wide phenomenon since a 70 yo career mediocre pitcher called Danny Darwin was given a starting spot for half the year in 1995. I have a crazy theory that its impossible to have a successful career in the dome unless your one of the greatest pitchers of all time (Halladay, Clemens). There just seems to be something weird going on here. Since I was born only 3 starting pitchers have had more then two years of sub 4.00 era's in the dome, Halladay, Hentgen, and guzman. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that's the lowest of any team in the majors over that stretch.

I know what you mean but a 4 ERA for two plus years is kind of arbitrary. Did you look at other teams as well to compare? Clemens could easily have had that if he was here long enough. I would say the Jays have had a fair amount of decent pitching performances over the years. Consider also that most of your life has taken place in the "steroid era". I was born in the 80's during a time when the offense was low and players changed teams less often. If the dome was open before 1989 I'm sure Stieb, Key and Clancy would have put your numbers to the test.

Yea the Yankees blow pass the jays by the time you get to 2000 but I guess It's a bit arbitrary. The jays just can't pitch worth s***, even in 1993 they were god awful and needed one of the greatest lineups in history to drag their asses into the playoffs
ILDD Verified Member Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 OK, I'm officially getting concerned now. Pitchers & Catchers report today and there is still no free agent signing. I'm trying to stay calm and believe that AA will get one (or two) free agents but it's getting worrying that nothing seems to be happening. Jiminez, Santana, Drew and Capuano could all really help the team right now, the time is right to give up draft picks and the price isn't going to come down much more, if at all. Please do something to fill the obvious holes. Please!

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 And yet, folks seem OK with playing "Let's Pick a Misfit Pitcher" for the final 3 slots in the rotation this year. 'Cause one of them is sure to work out. Riiight. should have had a reality series from dec to feb 15 to pick the starters....at least rogers would have made some tv revenue to use to sign other guys next year!
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 I just want to see Morrow stay healthy all season, results come as they may. It's tough watching him get derailed so often. 3 years ago Morrow > Scherzer

It's tough watching him get derailed so often. Makes 2 of us. Given my low expectations for the 2014 season, I'll probably enjoy following the team more than last year. Relatively good health would be great to have as even if the team is not good enough, it would put them in a better position to trade some of the more expensive guys for younger ones. There's also some guys in the minors whose progress will be interesting to follow like Stroman, Hutchison, Nolin, Jimenez, Pillar, Norris, Sanchez, Nay, Burns and all the guys in the lower minors. They also have 2 top 11 picks so assuming they sign one of the 2, lol, that will be interesting.
LunchBox Verified Member Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 No JPA, Bonifacio, or DeRosa will be huge for my enjoyment of this team. Bonifacio and DeRosa are/were potentially useful players, victims of poor utilization. Goins and Sierra playing as much or more than Boni/DeRosa will be far less enjoyable.

Bonifacio was bad no matter how he was utilized. From last years perspective the only capacity Boni should of been used is as a pinch runner or outfield sub in blowouts.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 No JPA, Bonifacio, or DeRosa will be huge for my enjoyment of this team. Yeah, although I have to admit, given the bench options last year, I actually enjoyed watching DeRosa hit, he put up some good at bats, same for Kawasaki. I'm interested in seeing what Kratz brings and if he can catch the knuckler.

Without Derosa we might have had to watch Izturis or Laroche or some s***** peice of s*** play third while Lawrie was out. As for Boner, he was a hell of a pinch runner and and while he wasn't even an average offensive player, he atleast made you a bit excited when he hit the ball hard, you knew he had a chance to end up at third.
BabbaGanoush Verified Member Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 I find it intriguing that you watched the games from a parallel universe because I don't think any of us but Sask jays fan and CHP saw what you seen. Are pinch runners not useful? What about guys who can play multiple positions? In that sense Bonerface was useful. Obviously when he started for weeks at a time, it was apparent that he was a below average player.

The playing multiple positions aspect is a bit overrated with Boni because he's so damn terrible at them. He doen't play multiple positions so much as be equally terrible at more than one position.
BabbaGanoush Verified Member Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 I think if you gave Boni a bit more time to get used to how to play balls off the turf early in the season, he would have actually been good defensively. It was his errors that killed him. He got to balls that not a lot of second basemen get too and knocked them down.

If I wanted to I could prove I was posting online that Bonofocio should have been dropped as early as May 2013. You ? Doubt you have the smarts to think that far ahead, certainly not the vision to "saw what you seen" ( sic ) whatever you think that means. I posted dozens of times the Jays needed to trade or dump Bonofocio asap last season, long before it was a popular refrain.
